Somewhere in Chicago…

I’m still alive. I’ve said it before but my nervous system was not built for these political times.

So I pull back and throw myself into a lot of “activity.” Work, my Etsy shop that has been dormant for three years, my family.

But all is well here.

Anyway, I’m drunk in the Loop with my 140 IQ boyfriend who is having a serious conversation at the bar about engineering even though he is drunk too, not sure how I got here but Taylor Swift’s “End Game” is playing in my head.

It would be great if I could get off this couch and take a shower but I used all my energy at work today pretending our government is not out murdering people in cold blood.

A lot going on at the moment.

Things are going down at work that don’t directly affect me but I find interesting. Heck, none of it affects me anymore. I gave them my retirement date - May 2027 - and I’m just wrapping shit up at this point.

My car got towed Sunday night. I was parked on a street you can’t park on between weird hours (like 2 am and 5 am or something like that) in the winter. Anyway, I forgot about the winter rule on that street and parked there. We have weird f*cking parking rules in Chicago and I swear to God it’s by design so they can take all our money for parking violations.

Anyway, $350 to get my car out. I had to pay two days storage because I didn’t notice it was missing for two days because I take the bus or train everywhere. Getting your car out of the tow lot is an ORDEAL. I stood around this dirty, smelly room for three hours waiting for my number to be called, had to talk to three different people, then got driven to the back lot in the dark by myself with some guy who looked like he just got out of prison. The towing company screwed up my car and now I’m at the dealership waiting for the bad news.

But the good news is my Butterfly had three interviews and three job offers. She is on her third day of a promising new career in property management - something she’s always wanted to get into.

I am not on any social media except for Tumblr right now. I’ve said it before but my nervous system is not cut out for these political times. I allow myself to read the NYT and watch Rachel Maddow, and those are my only other sources of political news right now.

Almost a New Year in Chicago!

We have been fighting to protect neighbors from disappearing into detention vans. We have been fighting for families who belong here. We have been fighting for the right to live without fear.

As the year closes, I am holding deep gratitude for every hand that supported human dignity. And I won’t forget nor will I forgive those who didn’t.

On NYE, I usually sit at home and wish I had plans but this year we have plans and reservations and I wish we could just sit at home.

My family and friends are gearing up for dry January but who is there for us when life gets tough? Sure the hell isn’t Diet Coke.

Tonight my oldest daughter told me that my 12-year-old grandson has to write an essay over break about someone who is always overlooked and never gets credit for how they show up for others.

She peeked at it, and he chose me.

I am sitting here feeling quietly undone.
