the beach was peaceful. not always peaceful, of course, as pirates were frequently coming and going and it was the closest thing to the water beyond the docks at port. but when there wasn’t chaos happening, it was quiet. alana enjoyed it there, picking her way across the sand as she took time away from the town to just breathe.
upon seeing a somewhat familiar face, staring out at the ocean, alana paused, attempting to work up the courage to approach. it really wasn’t any of her business what vida was doing, staring so profoundly at the ship that was slowly disappearing beyond the horizon, but alana was, for all intents and purposes, nosy ( although she preferred the term curious. ) it was as she approached though that the brunette had turned around, and alana stumbled, catching herself before she landed back in the sand.
“sorry!” she squeaked, attempting to compose herself, “sorry. i was just - i was just coming over to see if you were alright.” patting down the skirt of her dress, she puffed up her cheeks and finally turned her attention back towards the woman. “you looked a little, ah, distant.”
Vida hesitated. She knew she had come off too harsh. Her foul mood wasn’t Alana’s fault. She squeezed her eyes together for a moment, trying to control her emotions and then looked at the other woman.
“My apologies, Alana.” Vida sounded defeated as she spoke. “I was too severe. It’s only-“ She raised her hand toward the water only to drop it again. Some days everything felt futile and today was certainly shaping up to be one of those days. “One of the sailors on the ship that just sailed out had promised to tell me about St. Augustine. And I know, I know it sounds so selfish, but I can’t help but feel so tightly bound to this place that I’ll never be free of it.”
It crossed her mind that she may be bringing on too deep of a topic for a casual friend this early in the morning, but she was already so tense inside that she knew she was going to burst if she didn’t tell someone. Last time, she had blown up at her sister instead and that had ended up with her sitting on the floor and crying into her apron so maybe at least here she could pretend any tears were from the wind in her eyes.
“Don’t you ever feel that way? Don’t you ever just want to venture beyond New Providence? I so desperately want to know what’s out there.” She shrugged and frowned a little. “And sometimes it feels like that’s never meant to be.”
