Material Geometry in Human Facial Expression
A facial expression is one or more motions or positions of the muscles beneath the skin of the face. These movements convey the emotional state of an individual to observers. Facial expressions are a form of nonverbal communication. They are a primary means of conveying social information between humans, but they also occur in most other mammals and some other animal species.
Humans can adopt a…

Variegation cloud - processing workshop
Variegation Cloud is the result from the “Day1″of Processing workshop running by Karsten Schmidt at Städelschule Architecture Class. The “Day1″ focus on playing and coding noises as the particles that grow randomly and died within the limit of time. In 5 day of workshop, we focus on different topic everyday.

There are several properties that make something legible as a wall. Proportions and scale make a strong statement in the case. Wall acts as a selective barrier because of density of its elements and porosity. Wall appears solid but if we look at it closely the uniform surface comprises of many holes because of its layered structure. It has one plane of organisation and that makes it rigid in terms of appearance and function. The relationship between centre of gravity and ground is explored to release the wall of its limits by breaking the rigidity. The direct relationship changes into many complex interactions defining form. Change in the mass of an object shifts the centre of gravity eventually altering the relationship between a unit and its surroundings. The flexibility also introduces a sense of movement that applies to the whole system testing limits through alteration of individual forces. All the interactions emerge from the same uniform force applied in a diffused manner and an ability of units to manoeuvre based on the applied force.

“A Pattern Wall” is an investigation by the students of the First Year at the Städelschule Architecture Class into the typology of the Wall. The project took place in January/February 2014 and was led by Anton Savov from AWARE together with Ata Mansuroglu and Christian Karl of arch+lab, under the supervision of SAC’s director prof. Johan Bettum. Under the title “A Pattern Wall” six groups of students present visions and models of inhabitable walls. The basis of the works is an intensive investigation of the meaning of “Wall” as a paradoxical element in architecture: it divides the Inside from the Outside, means Protection and yet Constraint. The project proposals integrate spaces, activities and experiences and articulate them without the use of architectonic elements such as slabs, columns, beams or roofs. Behind every wall-concept there is a multitude of theoretical and practical considerations, which the students have carried out in an experimental design process. The projects are presented by large-scale physical models and are shown at Platform SARAI during Städelschule Rundgang 2014 on 13-16 Feb 2014. Some might say architecture is about a frozen music, a moment of climax which we can capture it easily like a static picture in photography. But what if the audience could have the chance to experience the whole song at every part and every verse that the composer written. What if the user could perceive the sensation of activities inside the architecture through the movement while passing by the building, and also the users inside could express their lives through the building façade. It would be like an endless movie which is being directed by the tenant all the time and being shown to the people outside, where they could interpret the activities inside at that moment from the visual in front of them.
Architecture as a diary : Architecture exists as a result of the necessity of its function, when this function is no longer required then such architecture can become obsolete. The Architecture enters a state of functional limbo whereby it is allowed to decay. When a building is designed and constructed it exists within ‘social time’, that is, it exists to fulfil a social function that is necessary at that specific point in time. As absolute time’changes, the social time of the building changes as its use becomes less desired and relevant to the schedule of society, this process continues to point of obsolescence whereby the building exists outside the framework of social time. At this point, it is the role of absolute time to catalyse a process of decay that engulfs the building and visually represents the time of abandonment. This project is the contrast side of this theory. - evrytsubj
