Alice shot the male a glance that almost warned him to stop complimenting her, but she didn’t have it in her to look any bit serious about it. Instead, she just smiled, trying to hide it and failing. Compliments on her looks always made her feel awkward when she managed to receive them seriously. Usually they were only ever from her best friend or the guys at work who jokingly hit on her. But now when they were coming from this stranger in a seemingly serious way, she didn’t know how to really react. 

Upon reaching a table that Jongsuk led them to, Alice took a seat and smiled at the other as he said her name to get her attention and start a conversation. The corners of her lips turned up even more at hearing how the pronunciation of her name didn’t come naturally to him. It was an expected thing from those who didn’t have a background in english speaking considering english names weren’t that common in Korea. 

“To be completely honest, I don’t think I really deserve any kind of role in all of this.” She said, following his gaze to the stage where she was expected to stand later on when the ceremony would start. Her smile then faltered momentarily as she thought of the reason why this gala was even happening. Thoughts of the horrible disaster that happened at Lotte World a few weeks ago plagued her mind almost daily and a feeling of guilt had always tugged at her heart whenever she thought of it.

“I’m only a data analyst, to be honest. I tend to sit in front of a computer in the safety of the ops center.” Alice purposely left out the part about how she had basically panicked and acted like a coward during the Lotte World explosion, unable to help innocent bystanders and even her best friend from getting injured. “What about yourself? How did you manage to get invited to this silly event?”

She could feel a shudder ripple through her body as he leaned in to whisper his response to her. Alice had always been quite sensitive to asmr experiences so the tingly sensation she felt this time was nothing new to her, but she still found herself a little surprised. She had to admit, though, it was a little embarrassing having such a little reaction in front of him.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Jongsuk,” she finally said, her fingers idly tapping at his shoulder. “I’m Alice.” Truthfully, Alice was surprised to realize she didn’t know him or even anyone with his name. Though perhaps it was a good thing to not know of him. What with her line of work, most of the people and names she knew were those of murderers or gang members across Seoul. Not exactly the kind of people she’d want to be dancing with at this ball.

Jongsuk, though... He seemed like such a lovely gentleman. So much to the point where once the song they had been dancing to ended, she wasn’t ready to part from him just yet. She removed her hand from his shoulder and just clasped the hand that held his tighter as she stopped dancing and pulled him away from the dance floor. “I only have so much coordination before things start to get messy which I’d rather you didn’t have to see.” Alice took a hand and pushed a stray piece of hair behind her ear while smilingly awkwardly and looking up at the much taller male.

Alice widened her eyes in surprise when she was guided into a spin, unaware that such a move would happen. Though by the time she had returned back to her original position with her hand resting delicately on his shoulder, there was a smile on her face from how enjoyable the spin had been. His praise was making her start to feel a bit more comfortable not only with dancing, but also with the man she could now call her dance partner.

“Honestly, no. You’re the first stranger I’ve met tonight and the first person I’ve danced with. My friend.. ah... Nevermind, that doesn’t matter.” She shook her head lightly before returning her gaze up to meet the mask before her. He held such a confident and sure-of-himself aura that she was almost sure he wasn’t just some random civilian that managed to get an invite to this gala. Perhaps he was someone... famous?

“I know we’re kind of supposed to be anonymous with these masks, but considering I’m wearing blue and my badge, it’s quite obvious I’m a cop. Could I at least ask what your name is?”

Alice looks up at the male when he speaks again, wondering why he would say what he was going to do before doing it. Was that the gentleman thing to do? Definitely something she wasn’t so used to, but she was quick to think she sure could get used to it. She glances around the dance floor, suddenly thankful for the anonymity the masks give everyone kn case she were to make a fool of herself with the dancing.

She feels a shudder run through her body the second his hand touches her back and she suddenly feels slightly embarrassed, only able to look down at their feet while she tries to keep up with his steps as he leads her through the dance. Damn, why had it been so long since she had last ever done such formal ballroom dancing? Alice tried her hardest to keep up and even think ahead to what she should be doing next, too afraid to look away from their feet in fear of completely screwing up and stepping on his feet or something.

However, his complimenting words left her completely speechless momentarily and she could feel her face turning red. Even the feeling of what she assumed was his lips touching her ear had her heart racing. She swore she was going to explode so she forced herself to calm down with a deep breath before finally turning her gaze up to him with a seemingly calm and delicate smile. “T-thank you,” fuck, don’t stutter! “I would say you are dressed quite nicely, yourself, though I can only assume the face behind the mask if just as handsome.” Alice had to mentally slap herself, hoping she didn’t sound as awkward as she felt.

Having been so caught up watching everyone dancing, Alice had ended up letting her guard down enough to not notice when someone had come up behind her until they tapped her shoulder. Slightly surprised, she spun around quickly only to be faced with yet another masked individual whom she had to look up at. But of course because she was at a masquerade. What else should she have expected other than a masked stranger? However, the question asked of her almost went unnoticed as she found herself a little too entranced by said stranger, wondering if she was supposed to have known him or not. But alas, she did not... yet.

“Ah... Yes,” she replied somewhat awkwardly, not used to be asked such a question. Usually, Alice found herself alone or staying around close friends, but she had to admit, it felt nice to have someone actually approach her for once. She took one last sip from her champagne before placing the glass down on a nearby table and returning to the man who wished to dance with her. She reached out her hand for him to take.

“I must admit, though... I’m not the best at ballroom dancing. I hope you can forgive me for that.” She offered up a small laugh, hoping this guy would be susceptible to her light humor.

After everything that had happened with Lotte world, being part of Seoul PD and walking around without a gun had her feeling a little weary and uneasy. However rules were rules and she would always follow them no matter how uncomfortable she felt. Plus, it was a simple ball being held to commemorate the police department on their hard work and to thank them for being the heroes this city deserves.

Alice didn’t feel like a hero.

She had panicked when the explosions happened and couldn’t even find and save her partner from being shot. Thankfully, he was okay and recovering well enough to attend this ball as well, but she still felt bad. Bad enough to not want to force him to be her plus one, but not bad enough to refrain from convincing him to buy her new blue dress and bedazzled shoes for her. Besides, Jonghyun needed a proper date to help him get over his ex.

Unfortunately, this meant Alice was now alone to wander around the ballroom by herself, not that she truly minded. It gave her an opportunity to drink from a flute of champagne while watching the many masked individuals dancing together in pairs on the dance floor. She smiled softly, enjoying seeing other people smiling fondly at one another even if they weren’t recognizable due to the masks they all adorned. It was a pleasant sight.

“if you didn’t agree and if you still don’t… you just need to reject him, ali.” bringing one hand to the back of her head, jonghyun ran his fingers through her velvet strands in hopes to soothe her state, unable to suppress that one faint chuckle upon her final question. “just hear him… really. just hear him first and then make your own decision. i can guarantee you, though… that he is someone i truly look up to. someone who i know is capable of doing things that you may even consider impossible. don’t lost such opportunity…” his warm gaze reflected his assurance, the veracity in his speech although he was aware of your reluctance and could perhaps even relate. “i would never motivate you so much if i didn’t know this is for your own good…”

After a few moments, Alice finally lifted her face out of the couch cushion and fumbled with pulling her phone out of her pocket to stare at it as if she was going to cry. “Wha... what do I even say if he texts me to meet up? You know I only ever dated one guy before and that was a mutual thing since we were already friends!” She looked up at him, trying to mimic the perfect puppy dog eyes that only he could really pull off properly. “I don’t know how to date, Jjong! I’d make a fool of myself...”

With an over dramatic whine, Alice practically threw herself on top of the male, groaning with her face pushed into his chest. “Why do you do this to me? All I ever do is love you and feed you and hang out with you for the last three years... I mean I’m kind of your best friend.” She pulled her face away from him and looked up at his face with a pout. “How do you even know if this is for my own good, huh? What if I was meant to be single forever? What if it was my destiny to just become a cat lady or something? You don’t know!”

As much as she continued to whine and complain about this set up, Alice had to admit that deep down she was kind of thankful for Jonghyun to help her out like this. There was no way she could ever meet someone on her own. For all she knew, anyone she met out in the real world could’ve been a serial killer! Truthfully, she did trust Jonghyun’s judgement even if he was one of the only people she could trust. 

Suddenly falling quiet, Alice narrowed her eyes and stared at Jonghyun as she sat back up properly and crossed her arms. “You’re buying me a new outfit if I have to end up going on a date with this Jaerim guy.”

“…Alice…” the brunette responded. “What are you even doing here?” Instinctively, she grabbed the Alice’s hand before the crowd in frenzy would drag her away. She had been doing it for countless of people that it felt natural. “…it’s not safe out there. Aren’t you usually with that guy…?”

“W-with Jonghyun, yes! We... We got separated after the explosions and I- I didn’t come prepared for this! We were just enjoying a fun day and all of this started and-” She cut herself off, not even knowing what to say or how to say anything properly. She sounded so frantic and probably wasn’t making much sense, but her mind was running a mile a minute with all these thoughts that she couldn’t comprehend fast enough.

However, just being near someone she was familiar with, even if her and Somin weren’t the best of friends, was helping to ease her fear and panic. It helped to make her feel less alone and not as in danger.

“Are... Are you here helping with SPD??” Before she could ask any more, a nearby gunshot went off and she instinctively flinched, tightening her grip on Somin’s hand. “Maybe I’m not ready to be working out in the field,” she dared to joke in such a dangerous moment. Alice glanced around the immediate area, trying to block out the screams and cries that she heard around her before glancing down at their hands and up at Somin. “If it’s dangerous for me, it’s dangerous for you too!

Her ears were ringing. There were spots dotting her vision. She swore she was screaming but she couldn’t even hear herself. Alice looked around frantically at all the people screaming and running, panicked that she now couldn’t find Jonghyun who she had just been with only moments ago. People were pushing and shoving by her in all different directions, knocking her back and forth until she had completely lost her bearings. All the panic and mayhem and she could barely breathe.

“Jong--” Her scream was cut off by a gunshot nearby and she immediately dropped to a crouch, covering her head momentarily. Someone had knocked her once again and she nearly lost her balance. She had to run instead of just sitting there like a target waiting to get hit. Alice pushed herself up off the ground and began running. All she could do was hope that Jonghyun had managed to get away safely and try to reconvene with him later. 

Run, run, run.

People were shooting left and right and Alice suddenly began to fear that someone she really did not want to meet would be there as well. Her heart was pounding and she didn’t even know where she was running to. Alice glanced over her shoulder as she was running, not paying attention to what was ahead of her until she bumped into someone causing her to let out a scream. She quickly turned around to see who bumped into her and felt a sudden wave of relief rush over her. “Unnie! Oh god, Somin!”

“You’re captivated, Jjong. Moonstruck, even. You two are going to fall in love and go to another country to get married and adopt little children and of course I’ll be the best godmother or aunt ever for them! Oh and maybe...” Alice paused for a moment, trying to hold back a laugh that threatened to escape her just at the thought of what she was planning to say. “Maybe he’ll fuck you so good, you won’t have to worry about your insomnia anymore!” By the time she finished her sentence, she was holding her stomach and giggling quietly.

Her giggling died down when he went on about this guy he was talking about. She felt so unsure about being set up on a blind date like this, but Jonghyun seemed so adamant about it. Her heart was pounding a little at the thought and the words ‘second in command’ didn’t make things any better. Was he in a gang?? Perhaps this was the second in command of Salvatore since they had ties with the SPD. Alice had never bothered to meet many of those members considering her job usually consisted of her sitting behind a desk analyzing information.

“You did what??” Alice’s eyes widened drastically as she stared at him in shock. “Why did you give him my number? What if I didn’t agree to do this? Jonghyun! Oh my god... oh my god, I’m freaking out. What do I do if he calls me?” She whined at him while leaning over to push her face into the seat of the couch and groan a bit. She mumbled out a few more words that she was sure Jonghyun couldn’t hear about how she was going to kill him. Jonghyun was right, though. She had been alone for at least a year now if not more after having broken up with Taemin, her only other boyfriend. Alice always tried to tell herself the single life never bothered her, but she was already twenty-five, almost twenty-six. Sooner or later she’d have to settle down as well if she still wanted to have kids.

A small frown slid across her face and she shot a heated glare up at the male who stood before her. Her cheeks were flushed pink in embarrassment from having fallen down in front of her boyfriend. It was her own fault, though, for goofing around so much and trying to make herself look tall on her tippy toes while practically dancing around in front of him. They had been walking down the hall in their apartment, except Alice was attempting to tip toe her way backwards until she had stumbled and fallen. Truthfully, she had had a little bit to drink that night so it wasn’t much of a surprise that she had fallen from being so clumsy.

“Taem...” she whined out while finally pushing herself up off the ground. “Why didn’t you catch me?? I could’ve hurt myself!” Being a little over dramatic, Alice finally stood in front of him again and flung her arms around his neck then kind of just let her body turn to dead weight against his chest as she hung on to him. “Carry me. I don’t want to walk anymore.”
