The abrupt completion of Sherlock’s serenade startles John out of his thoughts. Bringing down his mug from mid-sip, his hand wrapping around it for warmth, he settles himself to observing Sherlock. Sherlock’s eyes are locked on a spot above them and appears utterly transfixed, his violin now being held loosely in his hand, the bow held out, seemingly forgotten. Curious, John looks up to see the incongruous presence of hanging mistletoe. The plant was attached to the cornice board of the curtain directly above them, the stem tied together with a red satin ribbon.

Only the white glow of the Christmas tree sparkling from the living room provided any light as he quietly set his briefcase down by the door and loosened his tie, relief to finally be home making his shoulders slump and thawing the cool, icy demeanor he carried throughout the day.
