“I told Abby I was bringing my girlfriend,” Buck says. How is Eddie not seeing that this has serious stakes? He's usually on the same page as Buck. “Not my partner, my girlfriend.”
Eddie raises an eyebrow. “Pretty sure you're going to have trouble convincing anyone I'm your girlfriend. Just do what everyone else does after a breakup and get on Tinder.”
No, Buck thinks. It's visceral and intense. Aloud, he practically begs, “I need you.”
Eddie crosses his arms. The movement makes his biceps bulge. Buck swallows. “If you needed me that much, you would've said partner.”
“She called me six months ago!”
Eddie scoffs. “If you'd asked me then, I would've told you.”
Exactly what he would've told Buck, he leaves ambiguous. Buck can fill in the gaps himself. He would've told Buck that he and Natalia would be done before the wedding, and he likely could've predicted they'd end up right here, with Buck begging Eddie to go to his ex's second wedding.
Maybe Buck should start consulting with Eddie before he agrees to anything. Eddie can't do a worse job of running Buck's life than Buck has managed.
As a scholar in the many moods of Eddie Diaz, Buck can see he's softening. His shoulders slump slightly, always a clear sign when he's about to give in to Christopher's newest whim or let Buck wreck his kitchen.
Still, Eddie isn't one to give up without a fight. “What do I get in return?”
“Abby always had good taste in food,” Buck offers. “The meal will probably be great.”
“I get anything off your plate I want.”
“And we dance. As much as I want.”
Buck tests the waters. “But I lead?”
Eddie rolls his eyes. “Sure, Buck. If I'm in a dress and heels, pretending to be your girlfriend, you can lead.”
Buck hadn't thought about that part of it. Eddie in a dress.
“You’re going to owe me for this, though,” Eddie continues. “Something big.”
