A loaf of bread made in the first century AD, which was discovered at Pompeii, preserved for centuries in the volcanic ashes of Mount Vesuvius. The markings visible on the top are made from a Roman bread stamp, which bakeries were required to use in order to mark the source of the loaves, and to prevent fraud. (via Ridiculously Interesting)
(sigh) I’ve seen these before, but this one’s particularly beautiful.
I feel like I’m supposed to be marveling over the fact that this is a loaf of bread that’s been preserved for thousands of years, and don’t get me wrong, that’s hella cool. But honestly, I’m mostly struck by the unexpected news that “bread fraud” was apparently once a serious concern.
Bread Fraud was a huge thing, Bread was provided to the Roman people by the government - bakers were given grain to make the free bread, but some of them stole the government grain to use in other baked goods and would add various substitutes, like sawdust or even worse things, to the bread instead. So if people complained that their free bread was not proper bread, the stamp told them exactly whose bakery they ought to burn down.
Bread stamps continued to be used at least until the Medieval period in Europe. Any commercially sold bread had to be stamped with an official seal to identify the baker to show that it complied with all rules and regulations about size, price, and quality. This way, rotten or undersized loaves could be traced back to the baker. Bakers could be pilloried, sent down the streets in a hurdle cart with the offending loaf tied around their neck, fined, or forbidden to engage in baking commercially ever again in that city. There are records of a baker in London being sent on a hurdle cart because he used an iron rod to increase the weight of his loaves, and another who wrapped rotten dough with fresh who was pilloried. Any baker hurdled three times had to move to a new city if they wanted to continue baking.
If you have made bread, you are probably familiar with a molding board. It’s a flat board used to shape the bread. Clever fraudsters came up with a molding board that had a little hole drilled into it that wasn’t easily noticed. A customer would buy his dough by weight, and then the baker would force some of that dough through the hole, so they could sell and underweight loaf and use the stolen dough to bake new loafs to sell. Molding boards ended up being banned in London after nine different bakers were caught doing this. There were also instances of grain sellers withholding grain to create an artificial scarcity drive up the price of that, and things like bread.
Bread, being one of the main things that literally everyone ate in many parts of the world, ended up with a plethora of rules and regulations. Bakers were probably no more likely to commit fraud than anyone else, but there were so many of them, that we ended up with lots and lots of rules and records of people being shifty.
Check out Fabulous Feasts: Medieval Cookery and Ceremony by Madeleine Pelner Cosman for a whole chapter on food laws as they existed in about 1400. Plus the color plates are fantastic.
ALL OF THIS IS SO COOL
I found something too awesome not share with you!
I’m completely fascinated by the history of food, could I choose a similar topic for my Third Year Dissertation? Who knows, but it is very interesting all the same!
Bread fraud us actually where the concept of a bakers dozen came from. Undersized rolls/loaves/whatever were added to the dozen purchased to ensure that the total weight evened out so the baker couldn’t be punished for shorting someone.
I can’t believe Andy Samberg murdered Macklemore.
so last night my nightmare was that i was doing adult stuff writing checks, and in the part of the check where you say the amount of money in words, i wrote “fifty dollars fucking exactly”, and then spent the rest of the nightmare stressing about whether the bank takes checks with cussing in them or not
the next time i see @loononthepond in real life i am handing her a check for “two dollars fucking exactly” and we will report back with results
Fiance worked at a bank and says they definitely took checks with swearing as long as they could read the “Fifty Dollars” part.
He once had someone hand him a check for “seventy-six dollars and twelve cents, I hope you choke on it asshole” with an additional “travel expenses, to hell” in the “for” section.
That is useful to know.
WELL,, did you realize ?
Thats why Reiner and berth was so shocked on Armin’s statement about Annie because they really didn’t have any idea that Annie was caught already. because the people who knows about annie thing back in stohess were just the scout’s higher ups , EMA and Jean for the mission back then. thats why season 1 ended up with those 4 only from 104th

in the morning stomach: hey we’re starving and dehydrated me: Eats and Drinks
stomach: whta the fuck??? hwat the Hell andfuck
Hey I’m seeing tons of posts like this and as a person w chronic stomach issues, it’s because you’re overloading your system and not allowing your metabolism the chance to ‘wake up’.
Your body is hungry and thirsty, but drinking cold or hot beverages, and eating things saturated with heavy fats and carbs as soon as you wake up will ALWAYS make you sick.
Drinking room temperature (disgusting) water, OR mildly cool water (just cool to the fingers) first thing will prevent this. My fave thing to do is freeze a few lemon slices and throw them in a glass of room temp water, then drink it. It isn’t as severe as ice water or hot drinks. The lemon also helps your metabolism and makes the water not super gross. When you drink cold or hot bevs, you’re shocking your stomach since it’s (probably) almost entirely empty. It irritates the mucous membranes and can cause inflammation of the acid pumps.
Also you need to eat something small first. Like if you’re going to have toast and eggs, eat half a piece of toast and try to sit for like 5 minutes before continuing to eat the rest of your meal. Every time I instantly start eating full meals, I get very sick and nauseous. I used to keep a sleeve of crackers in my night stand drawer, and I’d eat 2-3 and drink a class of cool water right when I woke up. That way, by the time I was awake/dressed/made my full breakfast, my stomach was ready to eat. A spoon full of peanut butter is also a great choice.
If you’re still feeling sick after eating, keeping peppermints or peppermint gum (they gotta be peppermint) on hand is an easy way to settle the stomach. Ginger tea too. I try to avoid soda in the mornings now, but when I was in high school my breakfast was a can of ginger ale and a blueberry cliff bar almost every day because it didn’t hurt my stomach.
So if you’re feeling a bit sick, try taking it a bit slower. I know we’re all strapped for time and this seems like a lot, but even just switching to a milder temperature drink in the morning can help a lot.
Thank you! People really should be eating the most important meal of the day!

Guys, if you want to be a good artist and storyteller you need to absorb other media and influences beyond popular comics and movies and video games. Hell, even beyond visual art. Read novels, science articles, history books. Listen to podcasts, watch documentaries. Dip into different disciplines. Explore stuff outside your everyday. What you create and the pool of ideas you can pull out of is expanded by the knowledge you gain. Don’t do yourself a disservice by limiting your library. You never know when some weird shit you read about mushrooms could end up inspiring you or helping you solve a design/story problem.
yes!!!!!!!! !!
1 thing i like about this whole blogging on this blue site thing is that…. nobody’s a true physical form. we’re all just concepts. everyones blog is a museum dedicated to whatever conceptual presence they are. its……. so…. interesting
ANNE IS IN HOSPITAL
Hi, I’m Anne’s friend @winchdean This morning Anne was found in her room unconscious. She was taked to the hospital and the doctor said she overdose drugs. Most likely sleeping pills. I don’t know if that was by accident or not. Probably not because she was in really bad mental shape. I can’t go to her because I’m in UK and I’m pregnant and I must stay in bed by the doctor’s order. But other friends are with her and her sister. Her parents still ignore her. Last time I spoke with her sister, Anne was stil unconscious. For those of you who don’t know Anne - she was kicked out from her home for being bisexual and dating a girl. She has asthma, depression, social phobia and OCD. She has no money for all the meds she has to take. She also is without a job now. I also found out that she will be kicked out from her apartament next week. That’s all her meds:
I don’t know what will happen to her now. I don’t know how to help her. I can only ask you to try to donate on her paypal. Her email: [email protected] All the reblogged posts on her blog are now quequed. Please pray for her.
UPTADE (TUESDAY 25TH): Anne is awake and stabile. But she doesn’t talk to anyone. Not to doctors, not to her friends and not to her sister. She completely shut down. Her doctors has no choice but to send her to psychiatric hospital. I think it’s a good thing for her. Maybe someone is really gonna help her there. But the problem is the rent for her room. If she doesn’t pay next week she will not have a place to return. So please please donate if you can. Only one person donated small sum. And please reblog! One again her email: [email protected]
EDIT. (WEDNESDAY 26TH 540 NOTES) GUYS SHE STILL HAS NOTHING AT ALL AND ONLY FOUR DAYS LEFT TO RISE 800ZŁ FOR HER RENT. PLEASE PLEASE HELP. I DON’T WANT HER TO BE HOMELESS.

LOV THE CRONCH
a guide to exploring abandoned farms
essential supplies include: plenty of food and water, a change of socks, a hat, rope, bandaids, a knife, gloves, an acorn in your pocket, and an offering
there are always odd noises on the farm. half of them come from the animals
try to forget what the lake looks like between the hours of three and four AM
never ever find yourself alone in the milking shed in the south end of the farm. time passes differently there
if you happen to hurt yourself in your exploration, make sure you do not bleed onto the dirt
bring plenty of water, you do not want to drink from there
the cows will watch you, this is normal
close every gate you open, even if the fields are empty. don’t ever leave one open behind you, just trust me
beware unstable rocks, the cracks tend to be filled with insect nests
bring a weapon with you, but no guns
if you see someone else while exploring, never tell them your name. you can never be sure if they are real or not, and further out you go, the less real they will seem. the patupaiarehe have evolved in cruel and unusual ways
do not go inside the empty share-milkers cottages, whatever you do, do not go inside. something else lives there now
a tree with the undersides of its leaves showing mean that a storm is coming. a tree with no leaves means the storm has already come
sometimes the hills look like they’re moving. be aware of this, because some things don’t like to be disturbed
do not sleep under the full moon, in fact, just don’t sleep on the farm
finding skulls is normal, only become worried when you start finding ribs
if you find yourself lost in a forest, continue walking in a straight line until you are free again. the trees may make it look as though you are going in circles, but i promise you’re not. ignore the soft music you can hear
your phone won’t work out here
the ghosts from the land wars won’t harm you, but be sure to show them respect
don’t take anything from the farm with you when you leave. just be grateful you have made it out alive
I love these so much.
Idk what this is but I’ll be sure to follow these rules
