Do you like Hideo Kojima?

His early work was a little too “neo-tokyo” for my taste, but when Metal Gear Solid came out in ‘97, I think he really came into his own - both commercially and artistically. The whole game has clear, crisp cinematography, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the gameplay a big boost. He’s been compared to Shigeru Miyamoto, but I think Hideo has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.

In 2004, Hideo released this, Snake Eater, his most accomplished game. I think the best part is right before fighting The Boss, a cutscene so long most people probably just skip it - but they shouldn’t skip it! Because it’s not just about the brutality of modern geopolitics, and the reckless ways that governments spend soldier’s lives, it’s also a personal statement about the Metal Gear series itself!
