MAKING A FACE like that almost made Mahiru wonder if she just turned him down or insulted him and his entire family. Was he seriously taking it that hard?

“ THERE’S... NO WAY I can give you a chance. This one’s way too old and fragile. Besides, you’ve never fixed a camera before, right? You could totally end up making it way worse than it already is; or you could break it by accident, which would cost me way more money than getting it fixed. Although... the repair fee is still a lot... ”

IT WASN’T THAT Mahiru was picking on him or anything. He knew that, right? She just couldn’t take any chances with this.

Even his voice changed, going from wimpy high, to flirty high in 0.002 picoseconds. “We’ll have to do it some time after 7 since theatre practice is on. Oh wait-” He stopped to laugh at what he said. “Maybe I should take you to dinner and movie afterwards?!” He laughed even further.

MAHIRU NEVER LIKED having to encourage guys - letting the little things like this makes them so despondent was utterly irritating to her. Still, being his friend, it looked like she was left with no other choice this time around.

AND JUDGING BY his sudden mood changed, looked like her ‘pep talk’ worked too well.

“ M-MADIRU?! WH-WHAT THE hell kind of nickname is that?! I-If you can tell I’m mad, then what do you think you’re doing making up weird names for me like that? Geez, you’re seriously all over the place today! Did you want me to help you or not?! ”

WAIT, WHAT? WHAT was that just now? Did he just... ask her to dinner and a movie...? Mahiru’s face was almost as red as her hair; she was flustered, confused, and angry.

“ D-DON’T EVEN START with that! Didn’t you just say you were going to put an end to those rumors, and n-now you’re saying crap like that?! ”

Ibuki glanced away. Mahiru was so organised and mature and thoughtful, she always knew if there was a problem, and how to deal with it. Kind, dependable… she was everything Ibuki wasn’t.

“Ibuki must really look like a spoiled brat, huh?”

“ LIKE I SAID - the icky feeling won’t even last for that long. If it’ll make you feel better, how about next time you go to the beach, I’ll help you apply it so it doesn’t feel icky. But if you’re serious about boycotting sunscreen, you could always go out with a full-on body suit like Sonia wears to keep the sunburns away. ”

MAHIRU BLINKED AT Ibuki’s last statement. A spoiled brat? Was Mahiru really being that condescending to her?

“ NO, THAT’S NOT it. I mean, it’s definitely not a good thing to avoid sunscreen on a tropical island, but it’s not like you’re horrible for doing that. ...Sorry if I was a little harsh just now. I tend to get a little aggressive when I’m worried. Just promise me you’ll try to be a little more careful from now on? Anyways, for now I just want to focus on taking care of the sunburn you already have. ”

“ I-IF I HEARD about something like that, then obviously I would’ve done something about it right away! I-I’m not someone you need to get worried over, either. Stupid gossip like that doesn’t bother me at all! And it shouldn’t get you down so much either! ”

A COMPLETE LIE. She was bothered by this. She was pissed off. The very notion that people would be talking about her and Dave behind their backs was ridiculous enough on it’s own, but to be gossiping about their relationship was outright idiotic! But what might have bothered Mahiru the most was how wimpy Dave was acting over it. He never seemed like the kind of person that could be easily brought down to her.

“ ...WELL, NO I don’t consider you to be a total bastard. But the way you’re letting a bunch of dumb rumors push you around like this is seriously lame. ...Come on, it’s not like I’m just going to stop being friends with you because a few dumbasses are making up stories. MAHIRU STARED OUT of the window to her right, admiring the view with a soft smile on her face. Today marked her turning a whole year older. It didn’t really feel like it had been a year, though. In fact, Mahiru had been so caught up with everything going on, she nearly forgot her own birthday. Still, even though she never made a big deal out of her birthday in the past, the little things from the people around her really touched her heart - even if she didn’t always admit that they did.

SHE TRACED HER fingers gently over the box in her lap. It was a package from her mother who was still overseas. Even with her own busy life, Mahiru’s mom still managed to send a present to her daughter just in time for her birthday. Aside from her mother’s obvious success in photography, Mahiru deeply admired that caring side of her mother as well. She’d have to arrange for the two of them to spend an entire day out together when she came home. But for now, this was enough.

SHE HAD TO admit, he wasn’t the first person she’d expect to remember her birthday. And she definitelydidn’t expect him to jump out at her and shout out his ‘Happy Birthday’ wishes. The sudden outburst was enough to make her completely freeze in her tracks and stare at the boy in shock until she was able toproperly process what he was saying. Once she did,she let out a small laugh and gave a sheepish smile.

“ AH HA,YEAH, you got me. It’s my birthday today. Ididn’t really tell a lot of people about it, though. I’m actually impressed you found out about it, let alonewent through the trouble of making a present for me.Thanks.H-Hey, if it’s a gift, then obviously I’m not gonna just throw it out. I’m not that horrible. Can I see it, though? ”
