If the Government Treated Men Like It Treats Women
👏🏻This👏🏻though!👏🏻
And some men do not understand the point and the message and leave comments like that the condoms and contraceptives are not the same, therefore no sexism.
From Ada Palmer’s discord ama today
As a historian I’m awed by how GREAT a job humanity is doing now, the first pandemic where we’ve understood hygiene, hand-washing, where we’ve had actions we could take. In 1918 they didn’t even discuss delaying the election because there was nothing they could’ve done to make it safer even if they did, they didn’t know enough about how the diesease spread to disinfect stuff or anything. I know we’re focusing a lot on the mistkaes that are being made and the’re HUGE mistakes, but since my head is usually in the pre-modern world I sit in awe at how much we’re doing, how sure we are we can handle it together as a species, how empowered we are, and how much we’re reaching out and being warm and helping each other. Some governments are botching, individuals, but the collective is doing one of the most impressive things any species has ever done in the history of this planet. We just need to kee preminding ourselves of that.
<3
I CANNOT EMPHASIZE HOW TRUE THIS IS.
The death toll in 1918 was, all told, fifty million, three percent of the entire world population.
The death toll so far from COVID-19 is 190,000. Which is still a lot, and terribly sad and tragic, and the response has been botched in many places, and we can do better, in so many ways, but.
But that is a tiny number, compared to the last time we faced something like this, and the population is vastly bigger now than a hundred years ago.
That is astounding, and if we keep pulling together and following health authority recommendations we can make death tolls of millions from pandemics a permanent thing of the past.
hey so the reason 1918 had such a high death toll, including the factors of the botched response, is that it had a death rate of around 60% if im remembering right Covid-19 has a death rate of around 5%
Thats why we have such a low death toll. Not because of a good response. Its because the viruses are vastly different and one was w a y more deadly 1918 flu is NOT comparable to Covid-19!!! Remember that!!!
Nope.
Total number of infected in 1918 is probably around 500 million, or a full third of the earth’s human population at the time. Out of that, it killed 50 million.
It had a mortality rate of probably around 10%.
COVID so far has a mortality rate of about 3%-5%, but if people are not able to receive medical care that rate looks to spike up to around 7% to 10%, making it very comparable to the 1918 epidemic. (These stats are of course still developing as we learn more, but to the best knowledge at the current time this is what we’re looking at)
The mortality rate of the 1918 epidemic is widely documented and easy to look up. It was nowhere near 60%

I was walking around my neighborhood and saw a bunch of police surrounding a small house for a drug bust. As I got closer, I heard the policemen barking aggressively, so naturally I was like, wtf??? And one of them caught my eye and said, “Oh, we’re trying to scare them out of there,” and minutes later a bunch of furries came out the house whimpering and shit.
