Yellow-billed Kingfisher (Syma torotoro)

a medium sized species of tree kingfisher (Halcyonidae) that is widespread throughout lowland New Guinea and its adjacent islands. Its range also extends to northern Cape York Peninsula in Australia. Yellow-billed kingfishers are commonly encountered in rainforests, monsoon forests, and along forest edges. Like other species of tree kingfisher, the yellow-billed kingfisher feeds mainly on large insects, earthworms and lizards. Using its distinctive strong yellow bill to dispatch its prey.

ever since season 1, my little pony friendship is magic has been a show that I watch with my girlfriend. I enjoy sharing the show with her. My girlfriend is a trans woman.

Today, while watching the show, was the first time that she’s wanted to leave during an episode. The first time an episode has made her border on tears. She was distressed and betrayed, and that isn’t something that a children’s show should be making someone feel about their identity. My girlfriend is a grown woman. Imagine how trans children must feel watching this episode. Imagine how they must feel, watching 20 minutes of man in a dress jokes that honestly baffled me with how drawn out they were. That was literally the entire joke, over and over. Man in a dress. Get it? He’s a man in a dress! Ha ha! Get it???

Big Mac is long overdue character development. But why did it have to be delivered by him wearing cartoonishly exaggerated make up and a falsetto, because ha ha man in a dress? Why was it necessary to have a scene where his voice breaks and his lovingly animated adams apple becomes visible, because ha ha man in a dress? The fact that he said more words than eeyup and nope doesn’t make up for this.

but I know, you don’t want to hear this criticism. You don’t care about how the show affects other fans as long as it continues to appeal to you specifically, and you’re fine with man in a dress jokes because “it’s satire” or something. Maybe you think that asking media not to dehumanize minorities is requesting “special treatment” or “sjw bullshit”. But that’s you. And if you can’t handle criticising things for being genuinely harmful to vulnerable people, then feel free to vacate my online presence.

Amethyst’s chest rises and falls under Pearl’s hand.  Amethyst’s eyes flicker beneath her lids and a string of winking, spangled drool runs from the corner of her mouth:  Pearl wipes it away before it reaches Amethyst’s hair, frowning.  Amethyst doesn’t need to breathe or sleep, doesn’t need to dream, and it’s unsettling to Pearl to see Amethyst do those things anyway.  

Pearl’s fingers fidget.  Her palms itch.  One shake of her knee would wake Amethyst up.

But, “She does it because she likes it,” Garnet said, and Pearl understands liking things.  Understands being allowed to do things simply for the enjoyment of it.  It took her millennia, but now, certainly, she understands leisure.

She lets Amethyst breathe.  Sleep.  She feathers her fingers through Amethyst’s hair and rubs her thumb behind Amethyst’s ear, because Amethyst likes that too.  She lets Amethyst dream.

The door hums.  Pearl looks over her shoulder and resists the urge to leap to her feet at once:  Rose comes drifting across the room, dress whisking on the stone.  Her face is the face of a statue that’s seen a century of rain, worn down to nothing discernible.  Her eyes are closed.  She nearly makes it to the exit when Amethyst snores and rolls her head in Pearl’s lap, and then Rose turns and blinks and smiles, and Pearl feels like the heat of a supernova’s melting together all her facets, her fractures.  She smiles shyly back.

“I’m just going for a walk on the beach.  To clear my head,” Rose says.  Her words are a whisper.  Her eyes drop to Amethyst and rise again, crinkled at the corners with the kindness that brought them all to her in the first place.  “Join me?”
