In an interview, Jennifer Lee said that the first scene in Frozen 2 where we see the kids playing in the snow + the king and queen tucking them in bed happens before The Accident. Â
J. Lee: âThat to me is the night the girls do go down and play and Anna gets struck - but itâs earlier. It doesnât have to be that night but in my head, itâs that night.â (Source:Â Ginger Zeeâs podcast)Â
When she said that, I remembered this scene from Show Yourself. When Iduna appeared, the memory that showed up next to her was the one that we saw in the first scene before the opening of the movie: her cuddling Baby Elsa.
So now I wonder. Was that⊠was that the last time Elsa was cuddled by her mom? Was that the last time she allowed herself to be held like that?Â
⊠and is that Elsaâs memory⊠or could it also be Idunaâs memory of holding her baby for the last time? Do You Want To Build A Snowman? shows Elsa as an adolescent and as a teenager who was fully surrendered to fear. She didnât even get to say goodbye properly. Unlike Anna who openly gave her parents embraces, Elsa bowed. There was no contact. No last hugs.Â
I think itâs so beautiful that she gets to see her mom one last time.Â
The last time we saw Elsa with her mom, she was bowing sadly and timidly. That was the last time she ever saw them. There was no closure and she lived to regret that for so many years. But in Show Yourself, she was given a chance to be with her mom again! And this time, sheâs no longer downcast and restrained. Sheâs finally free and peace is washing over her! She even does this cute little spin to show her mom who sheâs become! And Iduna - with the memory of her and Elsa together - shows up in Ahtohallan. A vivid reminder that the love they have for each other never faded and itâs permanent. And Iduna is so, so, so proud of her baby. <3
Itâs so gorgeous to see that the person who was there in the middle of Elsaâs true transformation was her mom - the one who gave her life, and the one person who knew her and all that she could be before anyone else could label and define her. I am found! Yes, Elsa. You are found in love. You were born from love and you are a person worthy of love.Â
Go on, be free.Â
