I think there should be a rule that everyone in the world should get a standing ovation at least once in their lives.
August Pullman in Wonder by RJ Palacio
The only time you’ll play well in an audition is if you go into it assuming you’re the very best or the very worst.
“A loose, floaty dress is the work appropriate version of a nightie, and that's pretty much all I need to know” - Scarlett Curtis
Dress of the year. And while we’re at it, might as well be kettle of the year.
January
So this afternoon we plopped into town to try our hands at Irish dancing, which I’ve been waiting to do for about twenty years. I was wearing a navy striped dress with gold belt and white slip-ons with lines as thin as pen nibs.
It was a ruddy no-show from everyone on earth so instead we took sanctuary in a dark corner of ACMI and watched an episode of quality Australian television (Round the Twist) before buying ice creams from a cart and stealing a blue skied stroll along the river bank.
The title of my next book, according to my afternoon nap - “As for me, tell her that the kitchen doesn’t burn.”
I saw the sunset with my eyes. It was beautiful.
He stepped down, trying not to look long at her, as if she were the sun, yet he saw her, like the sun, even without looking.
Leo Tolstoy, Anna Karenina
I pulled up at a red light and thought I saw a little wave coming from the royal blue car to my left. Thinking it was a friend of mine, a look confirmed that it was actually a woman’s mullet flapping at me through the open window.
The 8th Harry Potter book is being written! How cool would it be if JK and her publishing team kept it a massive secret and the only way people found out would be to stumble across a pile of them in the bookshop windows... Wait. What’s a bookshop?
Do you remember how I said that it is sad when we forget the faces of those we love? I now think that we never do. I think that we imagine that they are lost, when what has happened is that they have become a part of us and can no longer be explored objectively. I would like you to think of me like that. Knowing that I will always be with you, though you may not be able to recall my face.
Astrid’s letter in Let Me Sing You Gentle Songs by Linda Olsson
The very essence (well, the tagline) of my blog!
Surviving Christmas
A mid-December visit to Chadstone shopping centre was happily brought to you by:
- The Pentatonix Christmas album - Arriving at 8:45am to embrace the empty* car park and beat the retail population and rising mercury - Discovering the prettiness, calm and top choice of seasonal tunes in Card & Caboodle - The caffeinic delights of the Laurent Bakery - Start-of-shift smiles from shop workers - Avoiding JB HiFi and spending minimal time in Target

To over-balance the above, a list of festive reminders:
- Be safe on the road. - Be considerate on the road. Indicate. Merge well. Be generous. Pay attention, especially in a right turning lane. Dickiness is not welcome. - Get your head out of your phone, especially when walking. Especially when j-walking. - Be aware of other people. Especially if you have a trolley or pram. - Leave none of these in a hot car: babies & children, pets, plants, musical instruments, food, water bottles, records… - Look out for friends and loved ones but also look out for people you don’t know. - If you receive a colouring book for Christmas, try not to feel the need to tell everyone about it. - If you bake for Christmas, try not to feel the need to tell everyone about it. - If you indulge in some craft, try not to feel the need to tell everyone about it. - Be gentle, be tolerant, be patient, as much as possible. Tuck impatience, selfishness and aggression into your back pocket. - A smile goes somewhere.
