I just watched "is god is" and it was such a good movie- very intense and all the characters felt like real people! Sterling Brown bodied that role and even tho most of his scenes were flashbacks, his character was genuinely scary! I felt so bad for the twins - their parents suck in VERY different ways but it definitely shaped who they became as adults! Loved the twin telepathy too! Great ending!

4.5/5 - there were too many piss scenes lmao

IS GOD IS might be one of the most cathartic movies I have seen in a long, long time. And I mean TRULY cathartic. The emotions were so strong and authentic, and the acting/writing was so impactful that I felt it in like my stomach. It was everything I was hoping it would be.

I love how this movie depicted how protecting abusers ultimately harms men as well as women because The Monster mistreated all the black men and boys in his life. He abandoned one son and is emotionally neglecting his twin sons. He rewards his attorney’s hard work in getting him an acquittal by cutting out his tongue under the guise of keeping him silent, even though attorney-client privilege is a thing as is the concept of double jeopardy. This is a man whose presence negatively impacted the black people in his life and that needed to be killed.

Tbh I think the problem with Dream Within a Dream is that people who watched it as it aired didn't realize the FL is a protagonist and not a "heroine". She is a lazy ass bitter/pessimistic and sardonic actress who gets sucked into the deadend drama she only took the job for to have a job. XD Her character is well established in the first episode.

Ppl complain tht she doesn't see the characters in the TV world as real but...yeah... Because it isn't real to her (also it's clear she doesn't care abt ppl in the real world either because she brushes her manager off who's genuinely worried abt her job). She's from "our" world and is basically treating the TV world like a video game. I'm only on Ep 10 but she keeps calling everything in terms of TV lingo like set, character, etc. She doesn't care abt anyone she just cares abt surviving and doing whatever she wants in the TV world.

Imagine if you got dragged into your least favorite drama??? She makes a lot of sense and tbh the other characters make sense too. They don't know they're just TV characters in a ridiculous melodramatic historical drama. They think they're real enough, but they're limited by the script too.

It's a 40 episode series so...it makes sense it's a slow burn but if you want a perfectly sweet and kind heroine to root for the show told you immediately this wasn't the show for tht.

I do agree tht this sort of character and plot is annoying, but like...also it's a hilarious show and I don't watch TV to be morally edified all the time? If the women of China wanna see FL be hot mess expresses why not? None of my business lmaoooo

I do find it interesting because I feel like Kdramas are very similarly mean to their male protags and the women tend to be ridiculously dumb and toxic but whatever they got going on in East Asia is none of my Black business. XD They got tht. I think the romance genre as a whole (or just romance plots in general) tend to skew toxic and borderline abusive when they attempt to be "girl power" like because grown adults should behave in certain ways and media has a way of writing relationships in very childish ways as if they're writing to appease people's inner teens and not grown ass adults mature media.

I mean Bridgerton also had major issues in the first series and books. Adult media just has an issue depicting healthy romances. If the MLs aren't toxic then the FLs are toxic. The sad reality is people in general are just toxic and like to consume toxic ass media to reaffirm their toxic beliefs.

Ex. Ppl getting mad at the FL in this drama for being...a protagonist and not a heroine...As if A. All media needs to be a morality play and B. All women need to be perfectly moral and pure

She even admits to skimming the script but acts as if she knows everything! She's not a good person and that's the point! It's also a comedy! Part of the joke is the villain isn't actually THEE villain!

“Is God Is” was spectacular. An indictment of an intracommunity system that props up, enables, and sanitizes the reputation of abusers. God and her children were seen as disposable, growing pains for a Man who never actually grew. Children he abandoned and abused will still defend him over the women in their lives. Grown men will cower in fear of him and never seek their own justice. The victims will create hierarchies, decide empathy on a case by case basis. And even knowing all that he’s done, for a second you might even believe him.

One of the most glaring themes in Is God Is is the way his sons fight tooth and nail to uphold his tyranny. The fight to uphold the patriarchy they are bound to inherit and benefit from, despite the destruction it does to their own mothers and sisters.

Ezekiel didn’t even know his father, but he was prepared to commit murder in his name. Because that’s his God. All he knows of him is the altar. Just like the biblical story of Ezekiel, he believes his dad is coming back/there will be restoration. Despite being so clearly exiled. And he’s ready to kill about it. While Riley was choking out Anaya, he made sure to let her know that he didn’t care what his brother did. The twin brothers probably knew their mother was being abused but their alliance is with the patriarch.
