Ok. Actual question. How does one study?

I got through school by paying attention in class and reading a lot or whatever, but I didn't do a lot of actual "studying," I don't think. I remember during sophomore year of college, one of the girls I lived with was very intense about shutting herself in her room to study, and I was always like, "What the heck is she even DOING in there?" I guess I should have asked!

Now here I am, attempting to prepare for a licensing exam, and my eyes keep glazing over when I look at the course materials for longer than five minutes. What the fuck!
