I'm rewatching "Prodigy" (or what's left of it on Netflix 😭), and rewatching this scene makes me realize its significance even more. Chakotay is a man with family and friends, and in this scene, he doesn't have much time to send a message to anyone, and he directs it to Kathryn. And he not only directs the message to her, but he also delivers it with a broken heart. But the context of this line is interesting; it's as if he's saying he regrets not being able to return because he knows his return is especially important to her, that she will suffer if she loses him. In other words, he deeply regrets not being able to return to her.
