Oh, she was listening. Really. However, despite her efforts, having someone else take the reigns meant she paid less attention — it wasn’t intentional. Really. Amara was there for the cause: a march for MLK Day. It was right in her ballpark. Standing up, she made her way to the table filled with markers and other art supplies, back turned from Ezrah as she spoke, “I’m not sure how I feel about someone telling me what to do, and not the other way ‘round.”

Ezrah stared blankly at the woman for a brief moment before shrugging. “I never said anything about you having to listen to me,” he clarified. “Just giving advice for a show stealing sign. But by all means, go ahead and share anything you’d like to add. We’d all appreciate a tip or two.”

‘‘Honestly, I would, it’s worth it,’‘ Sam nodded, thinking for a second. ‘‘Don’t tell anyone I was your enabler if you decide to go through with it,’‘ She chuckled.

“Of course not, the plan was all my own,” he smirked. “Imagine landing a gig on a show like Game of Thrones though? I’m not even interested in television roles and I would take that in a heartbeat.”

Moriah didn’t know how she ended up working on making posters but she was loving it she had already knocked out a few but now she was losing her creative streak. “So are we going for MLK quotes or the really good protest signs?” She asked as she started to sketch in pencil on one of the poster boards.

“Whatever your heart tells you,” he responded honestly, a white-teeth grin to accompany it. “As long as you’re happy with what it says, it can say anything. Well, not anything. We do still have the MLK theme to build around.”

Ian ignored the comments from the young man about how decent of an idea his was–he wasn’t used to earning praise and when he did, it rolled right off his back like water rolling down a leaf. “These whippersnappers nowadays,” he commented with a dramatized roll of his eyes. “We could probably use portable speakers or something, man. Or get one thousand tin cups, tie them to both ends of a string of yarn, and hand them to people on the street. Then we can gently yell the things we want them to hear and there’s a fifty-six percent chance that they’ll actually hear them.” 

Ezrah’s head tilted from its upright position until it rested awkwardly on his shoulder as the man went into more intricate details about making his plan work. “...Portable speakers sound like they could work. All those cups aren’t good for the environment anyways. A fifty-six percent chance definitely isn’t worth the damage it’ll cause in the long run.” On a nearby list for possible bring-alongs to the march, he took note of speakers, including a radio of any kind in parenthesis next to it.

Elizabeth nodded as he spoke, almost to the beat of his words. An activist in her own, she knew the importance of a sign and the message it was to send to everyone that read it. As the president of FACE, she’d spent her fair share of time marching, after all. “That’s pretty good,” She mused, “I was thinking of going the quote route this time. Maybe our lives begin to end the day we become silent about the things that matter?” 

“Quotes, huh?” He struck a thinker’s pose, eyes staring up at quotes only visible to him as they exited the crevices of his memory and entered the range of his active thoughts. “That’s a fantastic idea, especially if we use older ones that still have impact in present day. I’ll get to looking ASAP.”

Lana dragged the tip of her felt pen over the poster board below her, the flicks of her wrist creating steady curves and flowery lettering. Being involved as a member of Habitat for Humanity meant that she was often recruited to assist Julian Lowell in some of his other projects. She didn’t mind, at all. Anything to beef up her resume and potentially irritate Iva Zotrova. So engrossed with perfectly printing her letters on the board, she didn’t realize Ezrah was speaking until she looked up. “I don’t think people necessarily listen to traffic signs here in California,” She joked. 

“No kidding,” he giggled in agreement. “In San Fran, nobody cares if you don’t like to go fast going uphill, they’ll pass you if hesitate for even a second. Driving downhill is a lot easier, especially when you let gravity do the work.” Truthfully he had never grasped learning how to drive in his city of origin, the idea in the back of his mind that nobody drove in New York, meaning he would never have to either. Still having not legally secured a license made the man a constant scrub in the passenger’s seat of his friend’s vehicles.

Julian heard Ezrah project from even across the room, looking up from his own work with a grin. In the tiny little club he’d built from the ground up, it was an amazing feeling to see others taking charge, as passionate as he was about helping others. He stood, crossing the room to where Ezrah was working. “Thanks for getting everyone interested in the march. It’s a great cause, Ezrah–Keep up all the good work and I just might have to make you my successor when I leave.” 

He grinned with pride at the praise, nodding to accept it. “Not a problem, Julian, it hardly even feels like work when its so important. But if I could just get that promise in writing, we’ll be all set.” Ezrah smirked, turning most of his attention back to his own sign that had been drying for the last several minutes.

He hadn’t known when he rushed last year, but being part of the Sigma Chi Fraternity meant that you were going to help Julian in all of his philanthropic clubs, even if you hadn’t signed up to be in them. As an unofficial member of Sharks for Change, Ian found himself stuffed into the student center pretty much every weekend, doing menial tasks that would help Julian out in whatever he was doing the following weekend. “We should just start taping boomboxes to sticks. And yell stuff onto cassettes to play in them.” He paused. “Do they still make those? Boomboxes? And cassettes?” 

The man contemplated the idea for a moment, envisioning SFC as the hit of the march, making headlines even. “That’s not a bad idea,” he replied with a pat on the man’s shoulder. “Not a bad idea at all. Our message would be heard loud and clear and we wouldn’t strain our voices yelling. Effective and conservative! But yah, getting our hands on cassette tapes won’t be easy.”

Elizabeth thought on the very first day she’d joined Sharks for Change at Julian’s insistence, and how she’d been worried the extracurricular might not fit into her already slammed schedule. Julian had been extremely persistent, which stressed her out initially, but having been a member of the club for over a year now, she only found that her presence there brought her immense joy. She looked up from the poster she was working on, nodding at the young man, who towered over her from where she sat on the floor. “I’ve got the design down, but I’m still working on the perfect slogan. What did you have in mind?” 

Ezrah spun to properly face the unfamiliar voice, eyes greeted by a familiar face. “Personally, I always go in a bossy sort of direction,” he shrugged. “Something that will indirectly call people out on their bullshit even if they aren’t aware of it. Last year my sign said “What you think first is what you’ve been trained to think. What you think second is what you truly think. Stick with the second thought.””

‘‘I won’t say anything spoiler-y, I promise, I promise!” Sam responded with the same mocking urgency in her voice. ‘’But now it’s going down for real. I wasn’t even caught up but I heard about a few things so I ‘distracted watched’ all of it until I caught up.’’ She chuckled.

“Ugh,” he stomped his feet in frustration. “Maybe if I just pretend to have a cold for a few days I can catch up. Until then, I am a disgrace.” Ezrah threw a hand over his face, allowing his body to partially collapse against the wall.

“I swear, my weekends are either studying furiously, or having a Harry Potter marathon and eating cherry garcia, there is no in between. It’s official, I’m a loser. I need a night out, and stat. You in?”

“Did you say Harry Potter?” he asked, popping his head into a conversation he formerly hadn’t been a part of. “Because if you did, consider me a loser too.”

“Making a statement is essential,” he continued on in his monologue to his fellow Sharks For Change, all surrounded by crafts needed for poster making. A march for Martin Luther King Day was set to happen that weekend, an event Ezrah had lassoed a number of people into attending with him. “If you’re going to make a sign, make sure it’s one people will listen to as easily as they do street ones.”

“Do you know how hard it is to get a good lay around here when you are sniffling?” Almost on cue Alexander let out a sniffle followed by a groan. The Brit’s breathing was heavy even like he couldn’t get enough oxygen in his lungs due to his stuffy nose.  “I feel like I have the fucking lurgy going on in my head.”

Ezrah, nearly able to see the swarming cloud of not-so-friendly germs surrounding the older man, kept his fair share of distance from him, casually covering his mouth with his shirt collar. With a schedule as jam-packed as his own, he couldn’t afford for the word sick to even be in his dictionary. That and his bank account couldn’t afford it either. “A what?” he asked, voice muffled by his shirt.

“A’right now don’t fret…” Emmerson leaned forward and pressed against the wound slowly. “Put your hand there… I reckon you’ll live.” Rolling back onto their heels they sighed slowly and smiled blankly. Of course they’d had to help, because they could, but they couldn’t help worrying. Emmer wondered absently if it wasn’t divine intervention that had lead them to take this particular path to class or just a stroke of weird luck.

 “What in the world were you doing anyway?”

As luck would have it, Ezrah hadn’t been alone when he toppled down a campus staircase for the umpteenth time. Although a bruise had already begun to purple on his ankle, which had taken a majority of the blow, he still able to grin up at the good samaritan. “Believe it or not, I was just walking,” he breathed out, a lingering pain pulsating its way through his left foot. “Happens a lot. Thanks for the hand.”

‘‘I wasn’t gone, I was just really— busy. By busy I mean complete revision of the cheer choreos. I’m not even joking, we’re going for that trophy this year. And binge watching Game of Thrones maybe.’’

“Shhh, stop right there!” he demanded, hastily throwing cuffed hands over his ears. “I haven’t caught up yet. I’m still on season five. Binging so much isn’t the right term as “distracted watching” is.”
