Yellow
Is the color of the crisp fries that is laid in front of you as you waited for your best friend to arrive. He was never this late, and you started to wonder if something had happened to him.
Someone knocks on the glass window and you jumped. He was about 6 foot tall, spiked up black hair and smiling eyes. You raised an eyebrow. He waved. You looked behind you but there was no one so you pointed at yourself. “Nal?” You asked although you knew he couldn’t hear. He shook his head grinning away and sighed before entering the café.
“______-shi?” He greeted and extended a hand. You nodded and took his hand.
“Changmin talked a lot about you.” He explained.
“Changmin?” You asked, letting go of his hand. “Where is he?”
“He had to hand up an assignment so he asked me to come in his place.” He explained.
“Ah. He could’ve just told me then I would’ve head home.” You replied. “What’s your name?” You asked.
“Yunho. Jung Yunho.”
“Ah, Yunho-shi, please help yourself with some fries, I ordered them for Changmin but he’s not even here.”
“Thanks.” He grinned and reached out to take some. “So, I heard you just returned from America.” You nodded. “What are planning to do now that you’re back?” He asked.
“I don’t know yet… I’ve always been interested in law and I already took some lessons back in America. But I’m not sure.” You replied as the waitress serves your piccolo lattes.
“Law? Wow, that’s amazing!” Yunho complimented as he sipped on his latte.
“What about you?” You asked.
“Me? I take law.” He grinned and you gave him a look.
“Tell me more about it.” You smiled and leaned back in your seat.
“Maybe we should meet another day for that?” He asked and slides his phone across the table for your number.
“I don’t think so…” You pushed the phone back. The both of you continued to bicker about your contact and chatted until Changmin rushed into the café.
“Sorry! Sorry! Sorry! Ohmygosh, so sorry.” He apologized profusely.
“It’s okay. Yunho accompanied me.” You grinned and signaled to your best friend that his friend was here.
“Yunho, my brother!” Changmin bro-hugged him and pulled a chair to the table. “This guy here,” Changmin pointed to Yunho, “is no joke.” He finished. “He scored like the best in the cohort during his SATs. And his still a top-scoring student in his major now.” Changmin told you. You smiled a little and nodded slowly. “Impressed?” Changmin teased. You hit him on the arm. “Yah! You are not hyung’s type. I’m hyung’s type. Am I right?” Changmin asked and slung an arm over Yunho’s shoulder.
“Yah! Don’t say that.” Yunho shushed Changmin and pressed a finger on Changmin’s lips. “It’s our secret.” He whispered loud enough for you to hear. Changmin pushed his hand away and fake gagged.
You didn’t know how long the 3 of you were talking but by the time all of you left the café, it was already past midnight. The boys offered to walk you to your place but you rejected them since it was out of the way.
“Seoul isn’t safe enough for a pretty girl like you to walk alone at night.” Yunho said. You feel a little blush creeping up your neck but laughed it away.
“It’s fine, I’m pretty sure I’m too scary for anyone to harass.” You replied.
“That’s right.” Changmin agreed and you had to hold back the urge to want to punch him. You glared at him one final time before entering your house.
--
“Maybe it was a bad idea asking your friend to bring me around.” You sighed as you picked on your kimchi.
“Are the girls in your major bullying you?” Changmin asked. “Afterall, Yunho is quite a hot topic in school.”
“Yeah, they have been giving me death glares all week.” You groaned and dropped your chopsticks onto the table.
“Don’t worry, they will stop soon. They used to do that to Byul too.” Changmin shrugged and slurped the rest of his soup.
“Mwuh? Byul? Kim Byul? She studied here?” You asked shocked.
“Maja, Kim Byul.” Changmin replied. “She was our close friend, how could you not know that?”
“She disappeared after I left for America.” You snapped.
“Well, she was in Law too. They almost dated.” Changmin explained.
“Ahh, so what happened?” You asked.
“Aish, jjar jeung nar.” Changmin rolled him eyes.
“Come on. I want to know.” You poked his arm with your index finger.
“Wae? So you can laugh at Byul?” Changmin asked.
“Yah. She was my chingoo.” You snapped.
“Arasso, arasso.” Changmin sighed and he leaned towards you, “Byul dumped him after she found out that she was going to study overseas.” He whispered.
“Byul, jal haesseo.” You showed thumbs up.
“Mwuh? Yah, i yeoja!” Changmin yelled.
“Yah, Changmin-ah, if Byul did not break up with him do you think they will work out? Byul is a realistic person, she won’t do long distance relationships.” You explained.
“But, Byul didn’t even like him that much in the first place, she was just using him because he was popular with the other girls.” Changmin blurted.
“See? You say she’s our chingoo but you are still talking shit behind her back.” You rebuked.
“Yah! _____!” Changmin yelled at you again.
“Why are you yelling at one another?” Yunho asked as he sets his tray besides yours. “Everyone is staring.” Both Changmin and yourself peered around and realized indeed all eyes were on the both of you.
“Ah, it’s nothing much.” You grinned. “I will go to the library first.” You excused yourself from the table and cleared your tray.
--
“You have been acting weird.” Yunho said as the both of you walked to the school gates.
“Jeongmal?” You asked, fidgeting. He realizes this and his face turns solemn.
“Did I do anything that made you feel uncomfortable?” He asked.
“Anniya.” You assured him.
“Then why have you been so fidgety the entire day?” He asked. You felt like you couldn’t stand this awkward vibe anymore and clarified with him.
“Well, it was weird with all the girls staring at me at first.” You started explaining. “Then, I asked Changmin if it always happens to the girls you hangout with and I found out about…” You stopped in your tracks and turn to him. He looks at you questioningly. “Byul. Kim Byul. Do you remember her?” You asked. He sighs and runs a hand through his hair.
“Yeah I do. We met during orientation, dated for awhile before she left to study somewhere else.” He tries to talk coolly but you could sense a bit of anger coming from his tone of speech.
“I didn’t mean to bring her up. I’m so sorry.” You apologized and looked down. He gazed at you and patted your head.
“Gwen chan na.” He smiles and walks off to the bus stop first. You felt your heart flutter at his sweet smile. You have never felt such happy in a long time. “I heard you have a test coming up soon.” He said staring at the buses that come and go.
“Yup, I feel like I might fail the test.” You laughed.
“Yah, you have genius Yunho here. You won’t fail if I tutor you.” He smirked.
“Who said I was going to ask you to tutor me?” You grinned. His smirk wore off when he heard this and knocked your head. “Yah!” You screamed at him with a smile on your face.

Yunho and you were getting closer as the months passed. You were now in your 2nd year and Yunho, his 3rd year. With his packed modules, sometimes he wouldn’t be able to join you for lunch and Changmin would be there to accompany you instead. One day, Changmin came to your table with a pale face.
“Are those girls still pestering you?” Changmin asked out of concern.
“It’s getting better, but there are still some that can’t stand the sight of me.” You grinned. For the next half hour he kept asking you concerning questions and seemed really nervous all the time. Finally, you plucked up the courage to ask him what was going on.
“_____.” He said your name. His expression was so serious that you knew something bad was going to happen. “B-Byul… She’s back.”
Although Byul and you had used to be quite close back in high school, you guys drifted when you left to study in America and today, hearing that news wasn’t exactly pleasant to your ears.
“Mwuh?” You asked.
“Byul. She’s back.” Changmin repeated as though you really did not hear the first time he said it.
“Does Yunho know about this?” You asked. Changmin shrugged. You felt like the world was crashing down on you. You had finally found someone that you actually liked a lot and was willing to spend time with. And now, his ex is back and to make it worse she was your good friend in the past.
“_____.” Changmin called. You were too in a state of shock to answer him. “Yah, ____.” Changmin called out again.
“_____.” A lady’s voice boomed this time around. You slowly turned to look.
Byul was standing right in front of you.
“Byul…” You forced out her name.
“____. I haven’t seen you in a such a long time!” She exclaimed as she hugged you. You didn’t know how to react.
“Byul, how have you been?” You asked unwillingly.
“I’ve been well. I just finished my crash course in New Zealand so I’m back for my 3rd year here.” She explained.
“Wow. That’s great!” You said genuinely this time.
“Changmin, have you seen Oppa?” She asked. You swallowed hard. She called Yunho, Oppa? That just proved how close they were before.
“He’s probably in class.” Changmin replied trying to remain calm.
“I will see you guys around then. I still have some administrative things to settle with the office.” She explained and left after hugging both you and Changmin.
--
For the rest of the journey home you kept thinking about whether Yunho knew Byul was back. You couldn’t face him and when he tried to hold your hand you pulled it away.
“____.” He mumbled your name and you stopped walking aimlessly.
“Wae?” You asked still not looking him in the eye. He took a few steps towards you and you took a few steps back. You still don’t look at him and he snatches you up without warning and starts kissing you. You struggled to push him away at first, but you couldn’t. “Yah!” You snapped at him when he finally let you go. “Did you know she’s back?” You asked with tears in your eyes. He wipes them away, but doesn’t answer you. “Yunho!” You yelled at him hitting his arm.
“Ara. But I don’t care. I don’t see her that way anymore.” He explained and hugs you tight, brushing your hair as you cry like a baby on his shoulder. After you have calmed down, he told you that they have sorted their differences out.
He pulls a sunflower out of his bag and arranges the squashed flower. You laughed at the scene and he smiles at you. “So, do you want to date me?” He asked.
