the death of the author suggests that the fate of the character has always been in the hands of the audience. through the past 3 seasons, mike was turned into such an emotionally repressed character to the point it was extremely unclear how he felt about anything. this made fans assign their own explanations to his actions; this is what his character became. it’s futile to be mad at the audience for interpreting what was there, especially considering that characters reflect the lives of real people.

behind the tv, we can understand that the duffer brothers said mike was a self-insert character. when considering that the climax of the two arcs for the main characters were dependent on him, and that he made no palpable decision.. they reflected the cowards they are in mike’s ending. he’ll spend the rest of his life in inaction because they will too.

maybe there was another version him out there, and maybe the audience has known all along…

but he’ll never get to see it, and that’s his tragedy.
