Nightwatch - Jesse & Quinn
Jesse let his eyes quickly look over at the girl, a half-cocked smile etched on his features for a few moments before looking back ahead. He paused. ” Hey Yourself.” the blonde, running his finger through his hair before looking over at the baby in her arms, never really looking her over for himself. He smiled a little more genuinely, not really sure what to say, Jesse didn’t usually mix with … babies, but, Beth was cute, enough to bring out a little niceness from the normally egotistical bronze haired male. He finally snapped back into the conversation, looking Quinn in the eye ” no problem. I feel sort of Black sheepish.” he admitted. ” for good reason, honestly, but, I feel like you and I get along well enough to break my bouts of silence.” he said, leaning back a little, looking back up at the sky, then the landscape.
” I’ve never done this before.” he said. ” I like have a backup system… if my battery would’ve died in the night, I’d be one of the targets for that gun.” he nudged a little , still not looking away. ” Sort of lucky, am I right?” he shrugged. ” Well …” he paused. ” How’ve you been? I feel like — you have the biggest burden of everyone, you have you, and Beth, and you somehow manage to look ravishing.” he smirked, not willing to let that one go, a little flirting never hurt anyone, and every needed a confidence boost, Jesse was only willing to give it to attractive people . ” How’s coping been for you?” he asked. He was ready for conversation, something to make the night pass, something to get him through night watch to ultimately make Elena realize he wasn’t a good for nothing, who did want to help, somewhat, because he didn’t want to get pushed around, it wasn’t his style, he was tougher than that. ” Feels nice out here.” he said, adding on, enjoying the night breeze, a nice break from the heat of the day. He concentrated on his breath for a few seconds, able to breathe easy for the first time in a long time.
Quinn's hand brushed absentmindedly over Beth's forehead, pushing a stray curl out of the baby's face. She didn't miss Jesse's glances over at the child, but just smiled softly. Beth was like a person softener - no one, not even Elena, could be harsh around her. She was gentle, and usually brought out the best in people. If Beth happened to wake up during their shift, she would formally introduce her to Jesse, but for now, she was content to let her baby sleep. She smiled again at his black sheep comment, raising her eyebrows momentarily. "I have to admit, you're one of the people I would have never expected joining this group. You've got a bit of a...lone wolf quality to you." Pausing, she added, "Of course, Rachel's here now, so I'm sure that's a bonus for you." Her voice held no bitterness, it was simply a commentary on their past relationship. Her smile grew slightly and she glanced over at him. "Glad to know I make you feel comfortable. Not very many people say that about me." She knew that she could be a little intimidating - not as much as others in the group, but she held her head high and was quick to snap back at anyone who would think of snapping first. It was nice to know that Jesse could recognize her softer side, one that had come out more since this whole ordeal had begun.
Quinn's eyebrow cocked, and she nodded. "Well, yeah, if you had come wandering in here like one of - them." The word zombie was still hard to say aloud. It left a bitter taste in her mouth. It made her think of Bri, which was a subject too confusing in it's own right to focus on now. A smile tugged on her lips, and she nodded. "Lucky's right. I've been told I'm a good shooter. I wouldn't have missed." Her voice softened. "It would have been painless, at least." Letting out a quiet laugh, Quinn rolled her eyes affectionately at his comment. It was so Jesse of him to compliment her while they sat on a roof as lookouts, and yet, the gesture was almost comforting. "Charming, as always," she replied, a small smirk slipping onto her lips. "But, I'm doing okay. I mean, all things considered. Beth's not a burden." Glancing down at her sleeping child, a soft smile slid onto the blonde's lips. "She's like a ray of hope. She keeps me going." Her tongue darted out, sliding over her lower lip quickly before she drew it in between her teeth. Glancing out toward where the barn used to be, Quinn shrugged. "Coping's been...coping. It's hard not knowing if this sort of thing will ever be over, you know?" Her voice was quiet, but it carried to Jesse. Shaking her head, she flashed him an apologetic smile. "Sorry. That's kind of heavy for a night shift. How have you been? How did you manage to make it this far by yourself?"
