It’s very glittery in direct light!

Every time I visit my parents anymore, they always take time to comment on my appearance and how much it's changed, for better or worse. I could easily turn this into a fat-positivity post, or nonbinary-positivity, glasses, hair, ect. But the one thing I don't think I've ever seen any positive talk about are yellow teeth.

My teeth are stained yellow. I doubt they will ever be white, and to be honest? I don't care.

I don't have cavities. I brush. I pick between them at least once or twice a day to keep them clean. And yet they remain yellow.

I cannot tell you the sheer amount of damage this can cause a person, especially if they keep constantly getting told to brush their teeth every time they visit family. Like... I do. There's nothing I can do about this. And I don't really want to.

The only reason I feel any compulsion to whiten them is out of embarrassment when other people look at me weird for smiling at them. And how fucked up is that. I have taught myself subconsciously to suppress any joy or happiness I get when I'm around other people for fear that they'll see my teeth.

If you see how I draw myself, it's always with white teeth, even though that's not true. The only time I've ever seen yellow teeth in cartoons, it's always for the slobby character that doesn't take care of themself.

I didn't even realize how much it was damaging me until today, when I caught myself forcing back a smile at work.

Obviously, remember to brush your teeth and keep them healthy. This is not a post about letting yourself fall into disrepair. But if someone has less-than-white teeth, then... okay? And?

I think we should just stop judging people for their appearances in general. People come as they are. That's all they need to do. Who cares what fucking color their goddamn teeth are.

Addendum to this post because the people in the notes are absolutely correct:

Make peace with crooked teeth.

Make peace with sideways teeth.

Make peace with missing teeth.

Make peace with deformed teeth.

Make peace with teeth that DO have cavities in them.

Make peace with rotting teeth.

Make peace with damaged teeth.

I think a big part of why this has gone un-talked about for so long is just because having yellow teeth is associated with damaged teeth in some way, and thus indicative of a person's day-to-day life. But, just like with everything else, this is NOT TRUE.

Missing teeth does not automatically mean that person gets into a lot of fights or was bullied. It could just mean that that tooth got removed.

Not everyone can afford braces, and for some people, they can be more harmful than helpful.

Some people's teeth are hard to maintain, and they get cavities VERY easily. This doesn't mean they don't try their best to take care of themselves.

Everything has nuance. Let's stop boxing everything in "good" and "bad" categories based on what beauty companies want us to be, yeah?

i want to add that pretty much every corrective measure towards yellowed teeth damages the enamel. teeth whitening stripes r one thing but if that doesn’t work the next step is typically brushing with hydrogen peroxide. like yes this can def remedy the issue but chances are your just going to cause permanent damage and end up with cavities.

yellow teeth r not a moral failing. as mentioned they aren’t even always caused by poor hygiene. regular consumption of coffees and teas will stain ur teeth, for example. i recall there also being a genetic factor but im not an expert so don’t quote me on that. i find a similar sentiment regarding acne of any kind is similar. this idea that having acne especially as an adult is indicative of uncleanliness, when a lot of people have acne into their mid 20s, or have hormonal imbalances.

also being unhygienic isn’t a crime lmao. some people are poor, homeless, depressed, disabled, etc. u don’t know what a person is dealing with.

one thing my parents did right was convincing me that yellow teeth are ok.

my father even said, teeth that are naturally yellow are stronger. and, that whitening is damaging the enamel and ultimately not worth it.

being an adult and experiencing the pain of cavities makes one seek a dentist. I heard that sick teeth can even contribute to heart diseases. but yellow colour? it's perfectly harmless.

This was something that unfortunately took me years to learn. My baby teeth had soft enamel, I was put on some medication (I don’t remember what) that stained my adult teeth. They came in yellow (but strong!)

I don’t remember any other kids ever commenting on it but a concerning number of adults saw a kid with yellow teeth and immediately assumed the 8 year old was a chain smoker with a coffee addiction and it was their Moral Duty to say something about it.

It took me until I was an adult myself to come to the realization that those people were just assholes and my teeth are fine actually.

little belatedly, but here's a wip of my trying to figure out how I wanted to draw my WOL, Saffron.

Sometimes I read a book or watch a show with a convoluted storyline or series of events and have to remind myself that me and a friend I had known for 7 years found out we were related when my grandmother and her mom met and reenacted The Spider-Man Pointing Meme. My grandmother babysat her mom all the time when she was a kid.

We later learned that our parents used to hang out all the time when they were younger. Spending the weekend together fishing and such. Both our dads loved cooking. They lost touch when they had kids and both moved.

We only met because my best friend grew up playing with her godmothers niece, and thought we were a lot alike and made a point to introduce us.

Seven years later, turns out we were related.

I guess what I’m saying is; write your bonkers ass storyline. It’s probably not as wild as you think.

They should! I think my husbands biggest takeaway from college geology was “Slaty Cleavage”. He now points out all the sexy rocks with their slaty cleavage at every opportunity. 10/10, always delightful.

Front door, Before picture

Peeling and fading faux stained glass sticker. Very opaque. Blocks a lot of light in an already dark space.

The Plan!

My thought is: if there is already a fake stained glass in the window, what if there was a BETTER one? I can totally do that. (This is hubris. I have never done that.)

Result: OHOHOHOHO I am the best! I am in love! We are ignoring that I need to clean the outside of the window!

I need to paint this door black SO BAD.

I just used the gallery glass stained glass paint!

Instead of doing it directly on the window, I did mine on acetate sheets I cut down to size. Made it MUCH easier to get a nice thick, even coat being horizontal.

I just printed out my design and used it as a guide under the acetate.

I used several colors in the leaves and flowers and used a toothpick to blend the gradient. This helped it look more like real colored glass.

My tips, having played with these a while now:

-Highly recommend doing test swatches.

-if you are doing straight lines, get the fake leading strips! They’re awesome.

-wait a full day after doing the black lead lines before doing the color.

-use more paint than you think you need. It dries down a lot and looks really bad when it’s too thin.

-toothpicks. So many toothpicks.

I can’t tell you how gratifying these tags are because I debated SO HARD about doing a more realistic design. My first draft had the extra lead lines in it to make the leaves and buds sit more realistically within the diamond grid pattern.

But it looked cluttered, and made the diamond pattern less readable unless I thickened those lines up. So I took away the extra lead lines, hoping it wouldn’t take away from the Stained Glass Effect.

And honestly? I’m so happy i did!
