Something about how Merlin starts out hiding his magic from Arthur because he doesn't know him well enough to predict how he'll react, but eventhally he keeps hiding it because he knows Arthur so well that he's certain of exactly how he'll react.

I'm halfway through season five right now, and it hit me sometime during season four that at a certain point Merlin stops acting like he expects Arthur to ever learn about his magic. I don't think it's ever overtly acknowledged, but it seems as though Merlin is no longer frustrated by the lying and he's stopped waiting for the right moment to reveal himself. He's content to keep magic buried forever, as long as he can keep Arthur safe.

At first he wasn't sure that Arthur would forgive him for the magic because Arthur didn't trust him enough, but later he is sure that Arthur wouldn't forgive hin for the lying because he knows exactly how much Arthur trusts him, and he knows that he's betrayed that trust every day. More than that, he's done the thing Arthur would despise most: prioritizing Arthur's health and happiness above the well-being of Camelot.
