they have toed this line a time too many – the pair of them long since learning the steps to the dance that leads them there. today, though, there is a specific spark, a sense of something impossible. he can feel it burning, turning beneath his skin, that familiar longing he does all he can to keep at bay, behind closed curtains, worlds away from the light.

they've wandered off of the beaten path, as it were, simply the image of two young men pursuing whatever it is they might on such a fine afternoon. he does not account for how deep they go, how long one listens to the other's stories, and while his father had educated him in all the ways one might find their way back to society, that did not mean anthony bridgerton insisted upon hurrying such a thing along.

the sun is high when the world takes its turn. when there is a moment of nearness that provokes a lingering exchange of glances.

he watches as eli feels something light make its fall from overhead, accompanied by a sudden and insistent swat of action. which is why he takes the initial step forward, works his fingers between them in order to remove a small, fallen twig that's dared to make a home in the nest of the other man's brown curls.

he grins, then, holding the thing up and narrowing his eyes. ❛❛ fear not, i have found the culprit. ❜❜  anthony tosses it aside, making an animated action of this.  ❛❛ how might you have otherwise survived such an incident? ❜❜

he remains where he is, though, even as their laughter makes its exit, and he knows this that this is the moment – this, here. now – that he has both looked forward to, and above all else, feared where elijah holmes is concerned. you can kiss me, you know, eli says, and it puts words to the idea, makes it and molds it into reality.

he can smell him, a scent of sweet soaps and the thin varnish of sweat from their afternoon journey, and it urges him forward, insists that he do this, grasp this now, before they are to be seen in broad daylight. ❛❛ eli – ❜❜ he exhales, the warmth of their breath tumbling into the other. anthony's eyes close, his mouth grazing, ghosting across the other man's so suddenly he grabs either side of his face for support, keeping him there, steadying him in this harbor.

❛❛ we cannot. ❜❜ he inhales him in, again, again, again, and tips his head forward now, lips tracing, muttering. ❛❛ not here. ❜❜ not here. he says, and carefully angles eli, touches his back to the nearest tree to settle him there. ❛❛ of all days, of all mere moments – damn you. ❜❜ anthony opens his mouth to eli's fully, kissing him completely, and knowing that this, dangerous as it may be, will only be the first of many.

He has no idea what’s possessed him to ruin such an idyllic afternoon (he does, of course; it is something burrowed deep, an animal caged and straining and snarling to escape), but Anthony’s hand is in his hair, the trail of his fingertips leaving lightning as they go, and they’re laughing, and his truest heart’s desire slips out without thinking. 

The realization of what he’s said, what he’s done, makes even the warm sun freeze on his skin.

He hopes that @bridgeirton doesn’t see his face change– from coy and smiling to terrified– hopes he doesn’t see that animal in his eyes, panic stricken and cornered, when he looks at him. Elijah’s mind leaps into action, his inner Lord Holmes at the ready with apologies and reassurances to smooth things over with a deft hand and a silver tongue he need only give voice.

He looks into Anthony’s eyes and it all disappears. He’s lost in dark brown eyes, delirious with the warmth of his skin, drunk on the realization of how he’s so close and getting closer still.

And then he says it. Not Holmes, not Elijah. Eli.

“Anthony–” he returns, a name as familiar as his own but much more sacred and seldom spoken. Not since they were boys, not since everything changed. “I–”

He has never lived, he thinks, not until this very moment. His entire body is alive, a rush of meaning and feeling and exhilaration. One hand returns the touch and holds one side of his face, soft and tender, while the other slides back into his hair, fingertips knotting in the brown strands, desperate to pull him closer, desperate to keep breathing. 

When Anthony pulls away, Elijah rests his forehead against his, chasing the contact even as he voices what they’re both thinking. He finds his back pressed against the bark of a tree and he looks to Anthony, face flushed pink and eyes sparkling as his smile returns in full force. 

He kisses back eagerly, hungrily, fully, only pulling away when they are forced and their lungs are burning. It’s then when he meets Anthony’s gaze again, his smile morphing into a grin.

“Damn I?” Eli returns, laughing breathlessly. “Damn I, when my dreams of this moment have bombarded me both asleep and waking? When I have yearned for you, burned for you, for all our shared youth? When you dare look so maddeningly attractive and then kiss me like that in spite of all our better angels?” He leans forward. 

“Oh, my dear Anthony,” Elijah murmurs against his lips, “I believe the fault lies with you.”

The Right Honourable Carlisle Montgomery Holmes is a baron and a member of Parliament, with Eli groomed to take his place as Lord Holmes (which he desperately does not want to do). In Carlisle’s absence and with Katherine an adventurer and academic abroad, Eli takes over as head of the estate and parent to his siblings from a very young age. He does not cope with the strain well and can have a tendency to lean on opium.

Dominic is all the rage of the society pages (infamous among them for his rakish charm and daring, often drunken, exploits) and is a keen composer and musician. William is a thespian and enjoys a quiet life in the newly dignified profession trying to find his way outside the family shadow. Penelope is an aspiring scientist and explorer in her own right.

Maisie strides into the sitting room, bold as brass, dressed in trousers-- trousers!-- as well as a vest and coat doubtlessly stolen from or donated by her brothers. She grins at @bridgeirton as she flounces onto one of the couches.

"I am quite sure you've been keeping things interesting since I've been away," she greets him with. "I intend to hear everything, Bridgerton. Hold nothing back, do you understand?" // starter call!

"So, scale of one to ten," Rory begins, not raising his eyes from his phone as he addresses @timecruise , "how worried should I be? My nephew's on tour, it's half three in the morning, and he's just texted a video of himself upside down and belting Blaze of Glory." // starter call!

"I'm afraid they're not homemade," Olympia apologizes primly as she sets the tray, complete with teapot, teacups, saucers, scones, sandwiches, and small cakes on the table in front of @timecruise . "But, one can't be perfect, I suppose."

She smiles demurely before sitting, taking hold of one of the cups and the teapot and beginning to pour. "Now. What was it you wanted to speak to me about?" // starter call!

It’s another long night in the study of scratching away at his father’s seemingly endless correspondence, his head leaning further on his hand. The eldest Holmes feels his eyes close more frequently as the minutes while away into hours, finding it harder to pull himself back into awareness and the task at hand. 

The next thing Elijah knows he’s weightless and small. It’s a completely alien sensation but not at all an unwelcome one, especially paired with the melodic sound of footfall against wood, the rain on the windows and roof, and the familiar scent and warmth against his cheek. He smiles— light, easy, and unguarded— and inclines his head, attempting to press closer. 

“Anthony,” he breathes, dreamy and reverent. He thinks he hears a shushing sound, perhaps the rumble of words through his chest, but lets himself be lulled by his heartbeat. 

It’s only when he feels himself being laid down, the comforting weight and coolness of the sheets and blankets being drawn over him, a lingering kiss pressed against his temple, that his eyes open at half mast, hand reaching out to cup Anthony’s cheek.

“Stay,” he murmurs, sweet and soft. “Until morning. You should rest.”
