could you draw Arya with a bunch of cats around her?
So our assignment for Advanced Character Design was to choose one of four movies: Harry Potter, Star Wars, The Matrix, or Lord of the Rings, and redesign it for a hypothetical remake. Obviously this is really hard, since all these movies are so iconic and I’d super hate to get the job of remaking it for real, because everyone would hate me. Anyway, I chose Lord of the Rings, because of course I did.
From top to bottom we have: Aragorn, Gimli (as a lady-dwarf because I do what I want), Legolas, and Eowyn. I knew I wanted to pull in some nonwestern influences and include more non-white characters in lead roles, but it was still really hard to shake the imagery from the movies, which have a really strong aesthetic and which I’ve seen about a million times. I also wanted Eowyn to contrast more strongly with Arwen (who didn’t actually get drawn), and so I made her a bit stocky with a kind of Brienne-of-Tarth thing in mind.
It was King Daeron II the Good, who finally brought Dorne into the realm… not with iron and fire but with soft swords and smiles and a pair of well-considered marriages, and a solemn treaty that granted the Dornish princes their style and their privileges and guaranteed that their own laws and customs should always prevail in Dorne.
