It was with a little surprise that he finally noted some of Elros’ features in her face and at once he understood where she had come from, and the memories of the island kingdom were no doubt easier to bear with those who knew the lands as well.

“It is far from any of the Faithful here.” He smiled wryly and added as an afterthought, “At least here you don’t need to worry about the sun off the sea casting so much heat into the air.”

             ❝ No, ❞ she replied after a moment. ❝ I do not mind your company; it is nice to talk to someone who will not kill me if I say anything they disagree with - or at least, I hope you would not. ❞ She said with a light and joking tone. Míriel wondered for a moment,on who this elf could be. Even though she had never seen and elf, nor been to Middle-Earth herself, she knew well enough that it was not common to meet an elf outside Elven kingdoms.

             ❝ I do not fear the Faithful, ❞ she began, seeing a hint of understanding on his face and worry tugged in her stomach. She did not know how he would react, knowing who she was. ❝ For I am the one who helped them flee in the first place; it was easy to lead Ar-Pharazôn on a wild goose chase, but not Sauron for he had always suspected that I did not buy into his false promises like most of my people, I think. But I cannot... ❞ She trailed off, not having meant to say as much as she did as he was a stranger she had only just  met.

Míriel was silent for a while, but soon her curiosity got the better of her. ❝ How did you know who I was? By the time I was born all Elves were barred from Númenor and I have never set foot on Middle-Earth until now. ❞ She asked, tilting her head to the side. ❝ Who are you? ❞

Huor instantly noticed that she relaxed her shoulders, and he smiled kindly at her. He did not think that she was mad or confused. He had just believed every word she had said to him. He could tell that she was one of his descendants because she was born to survive all the hardhsips of this world. Just like him.

“I wish I could see the beauty of Numenor” he whispered. “But I think that I will die young, so I will not be able to see the beauty of Numenor. But I am not afraid of death since it is Eru’s gift to humans. Sometimes, I think that the elves envy us because we die while they live to suffer in this world. I do not want to be like them” he shook his head.

He stared at her beautiful face and he tried to smile once again. “I am proud to know that my descendant will be a hero. Ths is one of the few things I could ask for. Humans can accomplish great deeds, just like the Eldar” he told her. “I want my family to be remembered for this great deeds.”

Míriel felt the warmth of joy, seeing Huor smile at her kindly having not had anyone smile at her - at least in a manner that is meant to me kind, rather than menacing - since her father smiled to her upon his deathbed. She wondered how her forefathers, corrupted by resentment and arrogance, were descended from him as he was kind to her when he didn’t have to be.

             ❝ Númenor will not be built for another two hundred years, give or take.  I do not think I will see it either - even with my extended lifespan, unless I am exceptionally lucky and I have been down on my luck in recent years. ❞ She said, with a rueful smile.

             ❝ Yes, I think Elves too, envy Men for their mortality, perhaps more so than how Men occasionally envy Elves for their immortality. ❞ She agreed. ❝ Still, I have thought to myself once or twice, whether Elves realise that being mortal means that Men can die young and before their time. Death when young, or when sudden and violent can appear to be cruel and unfair to many. ❞ She wondered aloud. ❝ Despite this possibility however, I still prefer being mortal and am lucky to be so, I think. ❞

Cuilpantiel frowned, trying to recall her history lessons. No mean feat, with how long ago they had been. “I suppose since-”

She stopped herself, realising belatedly that Gil-Galad only fell after the Downfall of Númenor. Some scribe you are. Or history student. She shrugged noncommittally, her gaze focused on the silk. “Since I could remember. He has been lord since it was founded.”

Not incorrect. Círdan was lord, yes, but Gil-Galad had ruled from the Grey Havens, so Círdan’s role had been somewhat more limited than usual.

And the silk was, obviously, not going to be salvaged. “There goes that hope,” she said sardonically, holding up the dress. “You might be able to salvage the trim and the lining of the dress, but the silk is Túrin Turambared.”

Míriel was about to push the subject on what had happened to Gil-Galad since something must have happened if his name hasn’t yet been mentioned by Ídheglil, but she decided to drop it. Like the fate of Númenor, she would find out what happened to Gil-Galad when she met with Lord Círdan.

She picked up the dress that Ídheglil had taken from her trunk, saying that it was one of her smaller dresses. It was a simple garment, she noted - and the quality was not fine, nor as high as the previous dress she had been wearing. But seeing as she had nothing else, and it was given to her out of courtesy, she did not say anything. Instead, she slipped the dress over her - now clean - body, and smoothed it out as it fell around her.

             ❝ Túrin Turambared? I do not understand, ❞ she said, as she slipped back into her boots which were still damp with water; though it was something she did not mind much, having also no other boots or footwear available. ❝ What has he got to do with silk? ❞ She asked, walking over to collect the ruined dress.

Tuor could tell that queen Miriel was sad because they could not help the Numenoreans. But he thought that it was too late already. It seemed that most of those people were corrupted to the point there was no return. But he wanted to save Miriel. He wanted to take her far away from Numenor. She would be much safer in Middle Earth or in Valinor.

On the other hand, Tuor did not know if she was willing to leave her homeland in order to save herself from certain pain and death. He scratched his head and his chin as he got in the carriage, following his dear wife. He did nto know what to do that moment. Would the queen fo Numenor save herself? Or did she want to stay there in order to help the Faithful, even if this meant that she would suffer?

Tuor did not know the answer. He could not ask her about that yet. He only looked at her, listening carefully to everything she was saying to them that moment. He did not know much about hte rebellion against the Valar because the bliss of Valinor and his marital life had kept him enthralled. He had heard only rumours of their rebellion from the Teleri Elves.

But he did not know whether he should believe those rumours or not. Until it turned out to be the truth, and he shivered at the htought of his descendants rebelling against those who had granted them with happiness and prolonged life. They had learnt so much from the Valar and the Maiar until it was proven that they were ungrateful to those who had helped them.

Tuor felt ashamed of them. And this was even worse because those words came from one of the Faithful, a person who could understand the wrong of their ways. “I admire you, my queen, because you still have faith in the Valar. But it seems that the Faithful are few compared to those who worship Sauron. What can those few do against so many?” he wondered.

Was there any hope for them? He wanted to believe that there was hope for the Faithful. But Tuor and Idril had to warn them to leave Numenor before it was too late. They had to save their lives before the situation would become worse. “Will you follow us to Valinor?” he asked Miriel. “You will be safe there. And maybe, you could talk to the Valar about what is going on. They will act against those Numenoreans who are corrupted” he told.

Míriel clasped her hands together so tightly that her knuckles turned white, and her brow furrowed in worry. She knew that the Númenor’s problems were great, and had subconsciously downplayed their severity in order to continue hoping that her homeland, and its people, could be saved. To hope that either Tuor or Idril could come up for a solution was naive and unkind to put upon them that sort of burden, and she scolded herself for that.

             ❝ It is as I said before, I had always hoped to restore the good faith in the Valar in Númenor, ❞ she repeated, as she cast her eyes downwards, closing them tight to fight the tears that burned in them. ❝ But now I fear it is too late for this island and it has taken your outside views on this kingdom to open my eyes. It is as you say, what can a several hundred Faithful do against thousands of others who hold nothing but hate and resentment for the Valar. ❞

She looked up once more at the couple sitting opposite to her and hoped the dim light inside the carriage concealed her grief-stricken face at what was the death of the last hope she held out for the kingdom she called home. Míriel took a deep breath in and assured herself that her voice was as calm as it ever was before she spoke again.

             ❝ Even if I could leave my people here among the corrupt where danger lurks in every corner, I do not think my presence in Valinor will be much appreciated to say at the very least. They have never answered my prayers, or my father’s before me, for the actions of previous rulers and they do so for a reason, so I do not know what could happen if I step upon those distant shores. ❞ She said in response to Tuor.

Whether it is by carriage or by ship, it does not matter; but the Lords of Andúnië are the leaders of the Faithful and I want to warn them of the possibility of a coming storm so they may flee. ❞

Huor looked at the morning sky, while the rays of the sun reflected on his golden hair. He clenched his hands, anticipating for an explanation because he wanted to understand what was going on. He was curious to know who Miriel was, and how she had come to Dor-lomin.

If he was right when he had guessed that she came back from the future. He looked back at her, curiosity painting his blue eyes. He listened carefully because he wanted to understand who she truly was. He did not think that she was mad. He could tell that she was speaking the truth that moment.

Huor could always tell when someone was speaking the truth or was lying to him. And Miriel was obviously honest that moment. He suddenly realised that she was one of his descendants and he was happy that they were related, even though this relation was so distant.

“I assume that Numenor will be a beautiful place and it suddens me to hear that it will be destoyed” he said to her. “But I am shocked to hear that people will lose faith in the Valir. I admit that i am skeptical of the Valar. But I believe that they will help us one day. There is a prophecy among the elves which says that there will be someone who will go to Valinor and convince the Valar to help the Eldar and the Edain in the war against hte Dark Lord. I believe that this prophecy will come true one day” he sighed. “I guess that this person will be my descendant.”

Míriel relaxed her shoulders as she had tensed up while giving him the explanation he deserved for her strange behaviour. She was relieved that he did not think her as mad, or at the very least, confused; she thought it might make it easier to explain other things that will eventually happen, if she was ever forced to do so.

             ❝ It was a beautiful place; most large cities on the island were constructed from white marble with gold, silver, and sky blue trimmings adorning each building. ❞ She reflected, letting the memories of her childhood return to her. ❝ The palace that sat at the base of Meneltarma and it was filled with secret passage ways, rooms, and compartments. When I was younger, I made it my mission to find all of them and I think that I did; I know, at least, there were around two dozen that my father never knew about. ❞

She was silent for a moment, the memories stirring up a fresh wave of pain and so she changed the subject ever so slightly. ❝ Yes, it is your descendant that the Elves speak of in their prophecy. ❞ She affirmed. ❝ I do not know if it would make you feel proud, but he is remembered as one of the Great Heroes of the First Age; and his legacy is written among the stars. ❞

A soft disbelieving laugh left his lips as he heard her answer, realizing what he’d done Maglor bowed his head slightly. “My apologies, I find it interesting that any truly would wish a piece of themselves gone. Yet now… I can easily see why one may wish such. We all have things we would rather buried in the past after all.” Nodding at her he turned his gaze back out to the rain with a small smile, content with this new idea for the moment.

“Either way, whether it is to lose something or to gain it, I find I much prefer rainy days to sunny ones. They seem softer and kinder somehow.”

             ❝ I agree; it is a temporary refuge from the bright, harsh and constantly shining sun. I also find days of rain to be good days to think and ponder, and when all I wish to be is to be left alone. Not many would risk searching in the rain to find me. ❞ Míriel replied, discreetly studying his Elven facial features whilst he was turned away, as she had never seen an Elf in person as Elves had been barred from entering Númenor.

             ❝ I am thankful that on the island that I used to live, it rained often; though when the sun was out, it was fierce. ❞ She reflected, thinking of Númenor in its past, and how it now sat beneath the ocean.

  he bites back a smile at her tone, not out of disrespect, but a vague sort of amusement, like he is surprised by her brutal honesty, least not about her husband. though he knows not why he is surprised, even from far away, news has reached his ears of their marriage and the complexities of it, of the cruelties that were this king’s desires and ambitions. he prays to the valar that she finds her peace, not this makeshift peace she found herself, but something better, greater and worthy of her strong spirit.

  but none of this he says out loud. instead, he offers her a warm smile, and an elegant dip of his head. “it was my pleasure. to be called upon by the númenor queen is an honor, even among elven kind.” abandoning the flowers, he turns to face her fully, all sympathy and warmth. “we can only prepare, then, for the inevitable war, and it’s outcomes. we cannot stop a man blind to ambition and pride, not without bloodshed and violence, neither of which i am sure you wish for.”

His sympathy and warmth towards her situation and Númenor‘s predicament calmed the inner turmoil that raged inside her mind. It strengthened the diminishing hope held for the survival of her homeland, and she prayed that his vast knowledge and wisdom that he had acquired through his immortal life, could aid the kingdom in any way possible. She returned his smile with a small, but thankful one of her own.

             ❝ No, I do not wish for it; though history has often shown that bloodshed and violence brings change, I do not wish to travel down that path. I think to truly break the cycle, so that peace and goodness can flourish in a society once more, one needs to solve each problem in a way that avoids violence as much as possible; in a way that is most alike to the desired peace itself. ❞ She said as she shook her head slowly. ❝ Do you have any ideas on the preparations needed for this war? I fear that I am so blinded by worry that I cannot clear my mind so that ideas can thrive within. ❞

The ruined silk felt heavy in her hand, and from the feel of the cloak alone, the parts that were heavier than others, she knew there were other things inside before Míriel had spoken. It didn’t distract her from the scar on Míriel’s arm, clearly a burn scar - and in the shape of a hand, of all things. What in the Ilúvatar’s name?

Perhaps torture of some sort had been involved in Míriel’s past? It would certainly explain much, and Men weren’t as civilised as Elves were.

Dismissing it for the moment, she rolled up her sleeves, set the cloak to one side, and began trying to rinse the saltwater from the silk gown. She had to be able to salvage something. If nothing else, the silver embroidery would not be wasted.

“It is the Grey Havens,” she said, as if that explained everything. It wasn’t as peaceful as, say, Lothlorien or Imladris, but something about the presence the older Elven lords seemed to have a calming effect on the lands they ruled.

Míriel hummed thoughtfully in response as she watched Ídheglil rinse her gown. She had read many books on the Grey Havens and other Elven cities; books that told of the origins of the seaport city built by Gil-Galad, High King of the Noldor after the War of Wrath to serve-

Her train of thought skidded to a halt, and the water that she held in her cupped hands trickled back into the stream. High King Gil-Galad had been the ruler of the Grey Havens if her memory served her correctly; even in Númenor where Elves were hated and barred from entering, she would of heard of his death and many of the corrupted would have celebrated it. How could she have not noticed that Ídheglil kept referring to Círdan as a Lord?

She stood from the rock she had been sitting on, having cleaned herself of sand and salt and stepped out of the stream. Míriel picked up the towel and began to dry herself, starting with her hair.

             ❝ When did Círdan become Lord of the Grey Havens? ❞ Míriel asked suddenly, despite having the expectation that she was not going to receive a clear answer. Still, she thought it couldn’t hurt to ask. ❝ What happened to High King Gil-Galad? ❞

Huor looked at her once again, and he wondered what she was thinking of that moment. He guessed that she was hesitant about something, she wanted to speak about something that was troubling her. He wondered what that thing was. He scratched his chin and he looked away for a moment.

He was contemplating her words, and he was confused. There could be no other Tuor. She was probably related to his unborn son. But how was this possbile? Did that mean that she came from the future in order to talk to him? He could not tell. He was really confused that moment.

“Do you think that this Tuor is my son, even though he is not born yet?” he asked her. “Because I cannot imagine anyone else bearing that name except my son. Do you think that you descend from me?” he wondered.

Míriel bit her lip for a moment, wondering if she had done the right thing by telling - or implying - that they were related. She shook her head slightly knowing (better than just about anybody) that what was done, was done and she couldn’t go back to change it; even if she started to regret certain choices she had made.

             ❝ I do not know how to put this that will not portray me as a madwoman, ❞ she started, a small smile on her face, ❝ but alas, I have to try. I was not born in the First Age. I was born well into the Second Age; 3117 years into the Second Age to be more precise. The reason why you have not heard of Númenor before now, is because it does not yet exist. ❞

She thought for a moment, on how much she was going to reveal this time round. Something told her that she should probably stay away from anything to do with the War of Wrath and all battles that proceeded it. Speaking of Númenor would probably be fine, she hoped.

             ❝ Númenor was founded in the 32nd year of the Second Age by Elros Tar-Minyatur; he, by the nature of most things, was your great-grandson, and I am - or will be - descended from his line. ❞ She explained. ❝ Númenor however, soon went into decline when many lost their faith in the Valar. By the time my husband usurped my throne, Númenor had fallen too far and he declared war upon Valinor. This angered not only the Valar but the Illuvater himself, and Númenor was destroyed. I was still on the island then, and I should have died, but I awoke on a beach two days ago and now I am here. ❞

The first sunrays reflected on Tuor’s golden hair. His wife looked at him in dismay, and he stared back at her. They were feeling lonely, even though they could see a few people walking up and down the street that lead to the harbor. Nobody seemed to be paying attention to them, and there was afeeling of emptiness in the airs.

Tuor wondered what was going on. He felt more lonely than ever, wodnering what was going on to the most important kingdom in the worls. A kingdom that was much stronger than Gondolin in the days of old. It was surprising that those humans were able to become so strong, even though they were not immortal. But he could sense something evil there. Something that he could not change.

Then, queen Miriel came and she explained everything to them. Tuor could not describe how sad he was when he heard her words. He had guessed right” there was something truly evil there. Something that he could not stop from happening. If Sauron was taken captive, he would be able to corrupt the Numenorians even more.

“I really do not know what to say” he mumbled. “I am so shocked that I feel powerless. I doubt that I can stop those corrupted men. Everything has changed so much since the last time I received news from this kingdom.” They followed her to the carriage, and Tuor could not help but wonder how she had survived this cruelty and this malice.

Míriel tried to not look as crestfallen as she felt; she had hoped they had come to help as a sort of representative of Valinor. For a moment she had thought that her prayers that she whispered every day since her father told her of his dream of peace in Númenor once more, had been answered. But they remained as silent as they ever had been.

Still, her belief in them held strong and she regained her composure as she climbed back into the carriage followed by Tuor and Idril. She signaled to the horseman, and the carriage jolted forwards as they pulled away from the harbour. Now that they were all in the relative safety of the carriage, and she found it to be unlikely that anyone could eavesdrop, she began speaking once more.

             ❝ I think the decline in many Númenorean’s faith in the Valar began with the ruling of Tar- Aldarion. ❞ She began, her hands gripped tightly together. ❝ This was when they began to resent the Ban of the Valar in Valinor, and so they instead sailed eastward to conquer small groups of Men in Middle Earth, teaching them the so-called greatness of Númenor. It was Tar-Atanamir who first began speaking openly against the Valar, and from there Númenor continued to decline. ❞

She paused in her speech for a moment before she continued. ❝ My grandfather, Ar-Gimilzôr was a great enemy of the Faithful - a group of people who still believed in the good of the Valar - who sentenced anyone to death if they were associated with the group. However, his wife and my grandmother, Inzilbêth, was a member of the Faithful and she spoke of her beliefs in secret to my father. He in turn taught them to me, and they are what keep me going through this time of malice if I were to be honest with you. ❞

             ❝ I had thought, ❞ she began after she had finished her telling of the decline of Númenor, ❝ or I had hoped, that you came on behalf of Valinor; to intervene before things get worse. I know they do not listen to my prayers as consequence for the actions of my forefathers, and I do not blame them for that; but I fear for the innocent that if something is not done, something catastrophic will happen. ❞

             ❝ Please, I beg you,” she pleaded. ❝ Is there any way that you might be able to help me? ❞

“Expensive,” she noted of the clothes, half to herself. She was a young elleth, and vain, and she knew damn well what an expensive gown looked like. The gown, even ruined, was visibly something she would take years of saving and commissions to be able to afford. She examined the knot and gave one end a swift tug, pulling it loose instantly. “Might be able to salvage something of this dress,” she suggested, though her tone said clearly that she didn’t have much hope for it as she worked at the laces with practised ease.

Rich, then. Swept off someone’s pleasure barge? Cuilpantiel got the laces as loose as they would go and stepped away, then reconsidered. The mental image of a naked, very confused human woman wandering around the Grey Havens was enough to make her think twice about leaving Míriel unattended. “Hand me the clothes, I’ll wash them later.”

Míriel slid her arms from the sleeves and stepped out of the ruined dress. As public baths were common and popular in Númenor - amongst both the rich and the poor (though these baths were separate) - she didn’t feel shame, nor embarrassment towards her nudity in the presence of Ídheglil, as she handed the elleth her dress and cloak.

             ❝ Thank you; it is kind of you to do so for me. ❞ She started, as she began to take off her leather boots. ❝ I think that there may still be things in the pockets of the cloak; it felt heavy when I took it off, and I think I can recall hiding a journal of mine in there, and a pouch of coins. ❞ She finished, placing her boots neatly beside the towel.

Stepping into the cool stream - it was refreshing compared to the harsh salt water of the ocean - Míriel sat upon a rock that sat low in the water. She was aware that Ídheglil was keeping a close eye on her but it wasn’t anything she wasn’t already used to; and besides, she liked the company.

Cleaning the course sand from her body, she splashed the water onto her shoulders and ran her hand down her left arm, feeling a large patch of scarred, rough tissue. She didn’t give the scarring much thought as  the memory on how she received the scarring was not a pleasant one. She also had grown used to feeling it beneath her fingers.

             ❝ It is peaceful here, ❞ Míriel said, thinking out loud. ❝ I do not think I have felt peace like this in a very long time. ❞
