i do just have to say though.................... i feel like people who really really loved the movie's portrayals of the characters are adding aspects of the show characters onto them? you know what i mean? like i see people say that adrien and marinette were more likeable in the movie than the show, when movie adrien didn't perform a single act of kindness in the entire 2 hours despite kindness being a core trait of adrien in the show? marinette was normal and not particularly weird at all and just kind of a generic protagonist? were adrien and marinette actually more interesting in the movie than the show, or are you just cherrypicking the aspects of them you like the from the show and putting them on the movie characters to make your favorite amalgamation?
marinette fell for adrien not because he showed vulnerability and forgiveness and kindness and opened his heart up to her.... but because he awkwardly tried to help her up after being kind of weirded out by her? so like i guess she thought he was hot and that was basically it? chat noir fell for ladybug not because she was strong and confident and showed determination in the face of fear... but because she begrudgingly helped him up in the middle of a battle? so like i guess he thought she was hot and that was basically it? they fell for each other over just the bare minimum interactions? most of their relationship was a montage? like, did the movie do the work to convince you of lovesquare's romantic potential, or did you go into the movie already shipping them because the show had already convinced you?
thats totally a valid way to enjoy the movie ftr! i'm just saying.... idk it's weird to see people praising the movie for being "better" when i feel like a lot of the enjoyment of the movie actually hinges on watching the show as context for their characters. and i guess im just a cringe slow-burn enjoyer but i find it weird that people are using "faster" as a synonym for "better"
āmovie!adrien is just show!adrien but depressedā DO YOU GUYS NOT THINK SHOW!ADRIEN IS DEPRESSED??? š±š±š±š±š±š±š±š±š±
the "argos is part of the superhero team" thing is soooo funny, because it is so ridiculous and he looks so out of place and I'm sure it's super awkward for everyone involved and very difficult to explain. But it DOES make sense. And I totally believe it. It's just a really funny and awkward situation.
(I mean, what else is Ladybug going to do with him? Initiate battle with him (and by extension, Ryuko) to pry his miraculous from him? And then what? She seems to believe none of the miraculouses should be kept in the same place.... so who would she give it to? Whoever wields it will instantly learn that Adrien and Felix and Kagami are sentimonsters from a glance at their rings. Whoever wields it will automatically become privy to the horrors. Whoever wields it has the ability to murder her boyfriend in a split second if they choose to not value his life. Whoever wields it will have to be given a long ethics class on the treatment and value of sentimonsters and life etc etc etc.... a class that can only be meaningfully taught by like... felix himself?)
but yeah it's pretty funny
"gabriel got redeemed" no he did NOT that is not what a redemption looks like stop calling it that. he made one not-completely-shitty-choice that's not a redemption, that's the last shred of humanity he possessed okay thank you
"gabriel died and didn't face any consequences" HE WAS ROTTING AND TURNING TO ASH ALIVE FOR MONTHS. THAT'S A PRETTY BIG CONSEQUENCE. HE WAS LITERALLY CRUMBLING TO PIECES BEFORE HE DIED. HE MUST HAVE BEEN IN INCREDIBLE PAIN FOR A LONG TIME (WHICH HE DESERVED!!!)
I'll say it again, the only thing Gabriel "won" was that he got to choose HOW he died. He did not get to make the wish he intended to make, and he outright refused redemption when it was offered to him.
He suffered until the bitter end. He could have suffered more, definitely. But he suffered and he lost. It was not a redemption.
thank you. exactly this.
I mean I don't disagree with you, he absolutely didn't get redeemed. But I do feel like the show is trying to make it seem like he did kind of get redeemed? Like even just ignoring the stuff about him being a "hero" (because obviously that doesn't count), I feel like the show wants us to view him as less of a shitty person, just because he made that one decent choice
I'm horrible at explaining myself, but I feel that they want you to view him as a deeply flawed but good at the core character when... he's just not. He was a shitty, abusive, power-hungry dad (which obviously everyone agrees on lol)
im sorry but I genuinely do not agree with that stance at all. gabriel has always been a character the show garners sympathy for, but it doesnāt want the audience to see him as a guy who is good at his core. even in his final moments, he was manipulating marinette. she gave him an out. she gave him a chance to ACTUALLY redeem himself, to work together with her and fix everything. but he backstabbed her immediately. and then he made his wish, letting himself die to be with Emilie. because he always loved her more than he loved his son. Yes, his death allowed nathalie to recover from her illness, but he did not do it for her, or even for adrien. he did it to be with his wife, because he could no longer stand living without her, and because he finally opened his eyes to the truth that she didnāt want to come back. it was purely selfish.
personally I really and truly do not think the show was in any way trying to say gabriel is a good person- at the core or otherwise. and it certainly didnāt redeem him, but if you look in the notes of this post I have a much longer response re: why I donāt believe it can be considered a redemption at all, regardless of the āheroā bit
Thats fair! Like I said, I definitely don't think they're trying to say that he's suddenly a super good person(like you said, he literally manipulates marinette right before dying). I just feel like they're more sympathetic to him than they should be
But I also just hate him and don't think he deserves an ounce of sympathy, so that could be why I interpret it that way
ever think about the fact that marinette doesnāt know adrien (and kagami for that matter) were locked up in those white rooms by gabe and tomoe. that she didnāt know the full extent of what he did, that in her eyes he only saw her as a problem, and was being controlling, but she had no huge reason to believe adrien Wasnāt being treated well in london. probably thought he wasnāt able to contact her and that was the extent of it. and then ladybug flies up to him and tells him his father just saved all of humanity. what can you say to that? what can you do if the entire country decided your dad wasnāt too bad after all, that he did something allegedly selfless and kind? wouldnāt you swallow up your resentment, grit your teeth about it too? you surely wouldnāt try to rock the boat too much. no one has to know how much you hated him, how many tears you shed, in those final moments
Gabriel Agreste died doing what he loved the most: manipulating a child š
and this makes me realise that adrien, even while owning his amok, free of gabriel's orders and expectations, is still living in a world of his father's creation, one where he's a hero, one where he's the ideal to live up to, one where he's absolved of his crimes, with a mother of his father's vision and obsession and since tomoe is still alive, a very high chance of his schemes living on as eco-friendly capitalism. like, he's still not free. he's still not fucking free. his father's shadow still hangs over him with all this happiness around him. this is even worse than the fanon trope of him being ostracised or pitied by paris because gabriel has been outed as a supervillain. what's worse than being branded as a supervillain's son is his abuser being branded as a hero and that everything that he went through because of him to be erased like it never fucking happened.
i like to believe that marinette telling adrien to be himself and not live up to his father's so called heroics required a lot of energy and effort because she's kind of the only one who knows that all of this is fake. this new world is fake. adrien's idea of his father is not real. but adrien still has to fight to be himself because his father unlocked his prison cell but left him with the handcuffs on. (also one of ladybug's lucky charms in this episode.)
Yes!!! I also want to add onto this by pointing out the flowers peppered in the garden, especially in that final Adrienette kiss scene. Considering how everything is (usually, mostly) intentional, I believe their use of wisteria is quite peculiar, even more so in conjunction with the butterflies lingering around.
oh very brilliant. because marinette and adrien are happy and in love. adrien owns his rings and has two mothers in place of his father now. marinette's got a fulfilled superhero team and has got her guardianship back. but the location where adrienette have been showcased to be "living happily ever after" is gabriel's garden. more specifically in the very location where emilie's statue, the object of gabriel's obsession used to lay. the very location we saw adrienette having fun on their date in protection while gabriel was watching over them, ready to strike and break them up. they're still under his wing, under his power, even when the location has been stripped of his physical presence. it's frightening.
adrien would love mint chocolate chip ice cream. i am correct about this opinion
I really wish this finale came out any other time... I need to rewatch it and analyze it but I have NO TIME!!!!
