I mean, obviously there was a bit of creative liberty since Tolkien didn’t explain what had happened to Thorin during the time Bilbo was gone, but I always assumed that whatever it was took place in the middle of the battle. That just seemed like the place Thorin would choose to fight, among his people and in the midst of it all.”
