Days 14-15: Wait for it…wait for it…and then keep waiting. After all, that's one of the theme of today's block. Today we're sewing a non-descript building in Jerusalem, one where some of the disciples may have retreated to after a harrowing Friday. I can imagine them there, consoling each other, sharing fears alongside hopes. The two yellow windows, with the lights (candles) still on, are meant to represent these same disciples, up late at night as they wait. Today's block is a forgiving one with some options to make it a tad easier, as you'll see in the video, if you don't want to piece the grass - but of course I recommend that you do. The blades of grass will break up the straight lines of the building and create a lovely effect of a building nestled among the greenery. Days 10-11: Ready for a little bread and wine? It's five o'clock somewhere, so if you care to join me in a glass of red wine as we create today's block, be my guest. Juxtaposition is defined as two things being seen or placed close together with contrasting effect. Our block today, another table scene that will sit directly beside the table scene we created yesterday, create perfect juxtaposition. One block is about betrayal, the other about faithfulness. One block is about love of money, the other about love of others. Today, we recreate the Last Supper. Days 8-9: I wish there was a way to incorporate sound effects into a post! With today's block being based on Spy Wednesday, I feel like the email should have come with that ominous “Da-Da-DAAAA” sound the moment you opened it! Today we begin work on the second row of our quilt as we recreate the bag of silver coins Judas received in his betrayal of Jesus. We'll again be appliqueing today, but this will be the last time we applique - just straight foundation paper piecing from here on out. Days 6-7: Today we begin work on the fig tree – and if you're looking for a good fig recipe to accompany this beautiful block, I've got you covered here (stuff your figs with goat cheese, pop them in the oven until the cheese bubbles, pour on a balsamic reduction, and enjoy)! Today's block is our first dive into applique. So, just like we had a few days ago, you'll see there are two videos available for you today. The first is specific to today's block and the quilt along, while the second dives into how to applique. We'll cover it briefly in the main QAL video, but - again - since we're all at different stages on our quilting journey, an extra deep dive may help. It uses our “Love Letters” (inspired by St. Paul) block, but the technique is the same regardless of what block you're working on. Days 4-5: So how did your Palm Sunday block turn out? Can you forgive me for that palm frond? Haha! I honestly love the way yesterday's block turned out with all that detail. Today's block is much more simple, and the focus here is straight lines. We'll talk more about this in the video, but the key to today's block is making sure all those right angles stay right angles. In looking at the photo above, you'll see all but two pieces - the hillside of grass on each side - is a 90-degree angle. So, as you sew, be mindful that your pieces stay straight and sharp. Our houses of worship have changed in size and shape over the years, but one thing remains: we still worship, love, and are loved by the same God as our Jewish sisters and brothers. Day 1: Welcome to the Holy Week quilt along! Today is the very first day, and it's all about the prep work - in fact, we're not even going to touch our sewing machines today. Instead, we're going to spend the day getting our papers cut out, attached, and ready for tomorrow when we'll begin sewing. You'll find a video in my profile that will talk you through everything you need to know as we get started sewing our Redemption Story. Holy Week is a week that we all know the stories of, but is one that we sometimes rush through in the anticipation - and business - that Easter brings. In creating this quilt, I wanted to take an opportunity to slow down and create intentionality behind each significant moment of these eight holy days. If we enter into each day with a sense of intentionality, we are able to slow down and focus on not only what happened on a specific day but why it was significant and how it is relevant to our lives today. By slowly creating the eight blocks in this quilt, day by day, we are embarking on a journey that creates those intentional opportunities and enables us to grow.
