thinking a lot about Sakura today and her perpetually excusing Hina in order to fulfill the role of the knight. for example, in her somnium:
Hina gets me the wrong gift? that's fine, it's a gift from Hina, so I also like it.
Hina would leave me waiting for hours because she's bad at keeping track of time, I gifted her a watch so she'd manage it better, and she lost it? it's ok, I'll just come up with escape games so that she can manage her time better, it'll be more useful for her and it's fun for me to make them.
I partially regret protecting Hina because now I'm comatose and I see her struggling and I'm not there to help her, and she has replaced me with an AI of myself, and I can't wake up because this AI won't tell her that a doctor I know knows the exact treatment to cure me? it's not her fault, it's Akemi's. she just missed me.
Date was absolutely right on saying they "depended on each other". while Hina depended on Sakura for support, Sakura depended on Hina for affection. Sakura will let Hina do everything as long as it means Hina will stay by her, and Hina will do everything as long as it means she gets to keep Sakura. it is a very selfish and dependent type of love. Hina's reasoning for killing Akemi and Sakura isn't even "I want to be save Iris" it's "I couldn't let Sakura be the bad guy anymore". Hina would rather let Sakura (and Akemi) die by her own hand than let Sakura's reputation as the "knight" be destroyed.
Sakura is the perpetual knight who must always support and protect Hina even at her own expense, and then Hina is the perpetual princess who requires Sakura's support no matter the cost.
even in the bonus ending when Hina jokingly flirts with Date, Sakura is visibly upset but she just turns away and ignores it. it's when Akemi jumps in and shows that she's mad that Sakura voices that she's upset by this too, and also upset at Hina doing this in the past with other guys. the fact that Akemi is the only one that can break Sakura out of her "perfect knight" persona is also something I really enjoy about sakukemi.
Akemi doesn't break Sakura's "perfect knight" role just with this, but also by keeping Sakura captive. as an AI her role is to keep Sakura safe but by withholding information from Hina on how to help Sakura she also keeps Sakura hostage within her pod. it removes Sakura from the role of the knight and places her as someone who needs saving. Akemi becomes her protector, caretaker and captor all at once, all three of her roles placing Sakura out of the "knight" role, and by doing this she also places Hina out of the "princess role". the longer that Hina has to take care of Sakura and "try to save her", the longer that she stops being the princess and becomes Sakura's knight.
