I really enjoy making, listening to, and performing music. I also like visualizing data, and have been checking out different types of music visualizers all year. This semester, I worked a lot in Processing, so I decided to make a program that imports a song and adds a bunch of cool visual effects to the song, sort of the like the iTunes visualizer. The goal was to make something fun, something that a DJ at a concert or a club would use, that would allow the DJ to play a bunch of different types of songs and generate a visual landscape for these songs. I also wanted to stray away from the traditional waveform shape of other music visualizers, and make something more abstract.

So, I started poking around the internet, and found some cool inspiration here, here, and here, and I cribbed a bunch of code from this project. I found some more useful examples of how to integrate Fast Fourier Transforms (FFT), and Minim from Code Compartmental.

The result is in the video. It’s definitely abstract, and doesn’t really behave like a waveform, which was the goal. However, I don’t really like the asymmetry of it, and it also comes off as kinda distracting. Plus, I don’t know if it uses too much original ideas, so I definitely want to work on designing something more of my interests. But it is a start.

The asymmetry resembles fireworks. Maybe tweaking parameters on how large the particles can get might be useful. It's coming along very nicely.

December 9 2014 Itinerary

1. 7:30 - ten minutes prep for 2 minute updates/reveals.

2. 7:40 - 2 minute reveals on what you've done thus far.

3. At the end of the reveals feel free to share feedback and tips with one another. If Justin didn't meet up with you in the last class make sure you meet up tonight. Also if you need printing done let's work out a time to do so before Thursday nights class.

Homework:

1.Finish finals.

2. Please do your online course evaluations.

3. If you have any equipment from class please remember to return it.

By Thursday Dec 4 you should have at least a start. Sketches, a mess of code that does or does not work, photos taken, whatever. Thursday is a work period for the whole class. Bring anything you need materials wise

By Tuesday Dec 9 you should have a substantial portion of the final done. Most of that Tuesday will involve working on the project. Show an update ( 2 minutes tops)

They don’t tell you that a lot of programming skill is about developing a knack for asking the right questions on Google and knowing which code is best to copy-paste. And they don’t let you in on a big secret: that there is no mastery, there is no final level. The anxiety of feeling lost and stupid is not something you learn to conquer, but something you learn to live with.

(One of the toughest things to do when I’m teaching Processing is convincing the students who “just don’t get it ” to stick it out a little longer and persist in their efforts. I don’t expect all of my art students to become professional programmers. In fact I’m not sure if I have the mettle to do that myself. I do think that one of the many values of programming is that it “isn’t easy” and direct experience can cure the false perception. - J.L.)

Proof of concept demo from Russian creative agency The Family can turn any surface or objects into a touch interface using a Leap Motion sensor. The effect could be called ‘interface mapping’ in a similar way to how projection mapping works (although that term is already applied somewhere else in the field of user interface design). Itinerary Nov 13 2014

1. Assign the Final Project.

2. Go over Objects. Video then class exercise.

3. Go over Arrays. Video then class exercise.

4. Go over making a Video or GIF from the preceding two exercises.

5. Refine your interactive projects and presentation of those projects for next Tuesday.

Homework:

1. Make a GIF or video animation. Post it on Tumblr by next Tuesday..

2. Post a final project on Open Processing. If you haven't posted a ball project, grid project, or function project go back and fill those in.

3. Start thinking towards your final project. By next Thursday post a two paragraph proposal for what you are doing. Answer the following questions and come up with a few of your own.

What is your goal? Why are you doing it? Is it challenging enough? Are you sure you can do it? What are the upper parameters of your goal? What is the least that you would be satisfied in accomplishing? How does this work demonstrate your creativity and/or critical thinking?

After you've decided on this final project stick with it.

Choose from one of the following topics we covered in class this semester, or a combination of several.

Expand on the work you did earlier. Refine your technique. Provide new content. Show creative and critical growth. What new ideas/ things can you connect now? What established connections and habits can you call into question? You can do this final project o your own or as part of a pair or group. If in a pair or group the ambition of the work should be suitably increased. Due on the last day of class.

In the past we have created arrays of simple types, like int or float, and we have also created two instances of Car. Here we are going to combine both things: we are going to create instances of Car, but instead of making one or two we will create 100, and store all those cars inside one array. Of course these rectangular "cars" don't look very spectacular, but in coming episodes we will create arrays of particles that decide in which direction to go. I hope then you start seeing how you can use arrays of objects.

1.Read about Arrays. Convert a sketch that doesn't use functions to one that uses a function.
