Simply put, Val was bored. Midgard had become a boring place. Long gone were the days fighting and drinking. Now all anyone seemed to be doing was playing a game of cat and mouse. Some of the humans chased, and some ran. She didn’t understand the royal families strange love of this hunk of rock. If she had a choice, she would have gone back to Sakaar. She wandered around the city for a while before she finally ran into a person she deemed trustworthy. “So where would a person like me find someone actually important to talk to?”
That’s not Tessa Thompson it’s Valkyrie. She’s 2500 years old and an Alien. She may be -Hostile, -Distant & -Unstable but she’s also +Independent, +Determined, & +Intelligent. She’s fighting for Herself and this is her time.
Brunnhilde grew up in the royal household. Her mother worked as the Queen’s handmaiden, and her father served as a guard. Her childhood was relatively normal for a person on Asgard. She studied in class, practiced fighting with her dad, and attempted to study magic in her free time.
She knew magically she would never be as powerful as Hela or Frigga, but that didn’t stop her from trying. She successfully mastered teleporting, and ways to enchant her weapon for battle. She was never sure if it was something from magic, or an ability she grew into, but she was able to sense when people were close to dying. She could see an Aura around them shortly before. The colour around seemed to indicate how they would die. She didn’t mention it to anyone, as she didn’t think people would want to know.
Brunnhilde kept training with her dad, and eventually became a shield maiden who was supposed to protect the Queen. She stopped a plot to assassinate the queen during her second year as protector. In gratitude Odin allowed her to start her own special force within the standing army. She chose to make them an all female group.
Brunnhilde got her tattoo from the Tablet of Life and Time, which gave her enhanced physiology. In order to show her commitment to the Throne, she gave up her name and became Valkyrie. Within the warriors they would have nicknames to identify them, but to outsiders each of them was simply known as Valkyrie.
Valkyrie spent 3 decades just protecting the palace with her fellow sisters. She got close to one who they called Sunshine, due to her bright blonde hair and cheery personality. The two of them started a relationship, and everything seemed to be going fine.
It didn’t take long for Odin to become greedy, realizing he didn’t have to stay contained to just Asgard, and the other lands were ripe for taking. Odin invaded them one by one, taking Hela and Valkyries. There seemed to be no end to it.
Val hated fighting. She hated looking around at her sisters and seeing the glow around them, knowing the end was coming. There was nothing she could do to prevent the deaths, only try and comfort them before they passed. She helped their souls pass on after.
It wasn’t until Hela’s greed outgrew her fathers that Val knew something was really wrong. All of her sisters had the Aura, and the same one. They weren’t given a choice, they had to fight Hela. If they didn’t all 9 of the realms were at risk. They fought, but they didn’t have much of a choice.
She watched all her sisters get slaughtered with nothing she could do about it. She spent her time falling through space reflecting on how everything went wrong, on what she could have done to change the outcome. How she could have saved Sunshine.
After what felt like weeks she ended up on Sakaar. A place for lost and unloved things. She was lost, she was unloved. All she felt was anger. Anger for allowing herself to get sucked into a royal feud. Anger at the royals for thinking others were indispensable. Anger for not stopping her sisters from fighting before.
The Grandmaster saw her anger, and let her fight. She fought everyone who came into the ring, and won. Her anger faded into numbness, and she kept fighting. The pain from the fights reminded her she was at least alive. She started drinking heavily, hoping it would help her forget who she was.
She stayed as champion for what felt like millennia before she spotted a Green monster in the trash heap. She convinced the Grandmaster to let her become a scrapper, and give this new champion a chance. He somehow agreed, and Val was content to drink her life away.
The first Asgardian prince landed weeks before the second, but it didn’t take either long to figure out who she was. If it was up to her, all three of them could have rotted on the planet together. She would have let them, if they didn’t inform her Hela was back. There was nothing that Val wanted more than Revenge.
They managed to escape Sakaar, even though the Grandmaster must have known about their plot and still willing let them escape. She should have known something was off then.
She got to fight Hela, but she didn’t get her revenge. She would never admit that she actually started to like the two princes. She even got to meet who Hulk was when he wasn’t green. They took the remaining Asgardians out into space, looking for somewhere to resettle their people.
Just when she thought they had found a new planet, Thanos came out of nowhere. There wasn’t anything they could have done. She took those who she could on a second ship, and escaped. She took them down to the new planet. They managed to restart their society while they waited to hear if the others were still alive.
Out of the blue, people just dusted away. There was no warning, and no explanation for why it happened. They went from a thousand survivors to just 100. She took the people back on the ship and flew them to Midgard. She assumed that would be where Thor and Bruce went.
When she touched down on the planet, it was nothing like what was described. Their world seemed to be in Chaos, and the year was 2033
