What do you know that’s not your dad’s mythology?
‘Cause I’ve got one hand in my pocket, and the other one is giving a peace sign.

amazing how this site can go apeshit over musicals every day but never remember Telephone Wire from Fun Home when Alison Bechdel shifts between “say something talk to him” and “say something talk to ME” and then just says anything in such a crushed voice

thinking about the Fates in Hadestown, and how they whisper the characters’ worst thoughts to them in their darkest moments. they tell Eurydice that she needs to be safe and secure, to look out for herself; they tell Hades that no-one will respect him if he lets the workers walk out; they tell Orpheus that someone like him can’t possibly manage the journey from the Underworld.
and in ancient Greek thought the gods both exist and are personifications of people’s feelings, so having the Fates play this role is a great way of dramatising one of the central questions of tragedy: do things play out as they do because it’s destined, because an external force is driving it, or because of the personalities - and in this case, the insecurities - of the people involved? more to the point, could they play out differently next time around?
imagine being loved by me.
orpheus was a poor boy,

A song about the struggles of being a gay/bi girl in high school? Sung by a bisexual woman of color? Who happened to be one of the stars of The Prom on Broadway? And the song evokes just about every emotion in the book? Why yes, SIGN ME TF UP! Izzy’s so talented both as a singer and an actress and she always floors me.
