Beck sighed and looked down at Bear, “Alright, I get what he did and I get you are angry with him but maybe we can work this out between us?” He rubbed Bear’s head, “He is still a puppy and doesn’t have manners that his dad does. So can I make it up to you?”

she knows he’s just a puppy, but it still upsets her to see her baseball (signed by kenley jansen!) coated in slobber. the signature was smudged up and down, but dorothy clears her throat and looks up towards beck. “i know, i get that, but... this was really special, man. had my name on it and everything.” she knew that a replacement was around $150, but that seemed a little steep for a puppy accident. “baseball isn’t even popular here... what can you do for me?”

Noble sighed out of relief after the quick sip. “Right- and you were saying?”

“a drink already?” it somewhat takes dorothy by surprise, but she gives a shake of her head, and continues. “really, though, isn’t it absurd that the kraft cheese singles aren’t even considered cheese? they’re a cheese product!”

     in all honesty, to nev, this is potentially the worst idea since savoury muffins. and that’s saying something. “i mean – i’m not gonna lie to you, babe, but – uh, it’s probably not the best idea you’ve ever had – ? but fuck it, i’m not gonna turn down food,” he shrugs, planting himself down onto the scuffed concrete. “you couldn’t of picked somewhere warmer ?” it’s a rhetorical question paired with a smile, and he’s already eyeing the picnic basket in her arms. “what’ve we got ?”

“you know, i beg to differ. one time i thought it’d be a good idea to close my eyes and throw my softball bat into the air. i almost gave this girl on my team a concussion.” despite her awkward, uncoordinated nature, there was something that dorothy admired about the skateboarders and all the tricks they could perform. “come on, it’s not that cold. ten degrees isn’t that bad.” she smiles back at him, flipping the top of the basket back and peering inside. “gosh, you want the list to be a mile long? jam sandwiches, popcorn, fruit, there’s even a few slices of cake that i packed in here, i think. what do you want first?”

sofia is the last person you would find at the skatepark; watching the youth skate around a park doing tricks for hours on end is not something she labels interesting but each to their own. was having a picnic at the skatepark going to make her change her mind? probably not. nevertheless, she’s here attempting to rid of her pessimistic opinion on the skatepark with dorothy. maybe this could be a good get to know you experience, not that sofia’s going to open up very much. “this would have been a hell of a lot better with a bottle of wine but i guess i can deal with apple juice. what made you juice this place anyway?” she’s questioning as she helps straighten out the picnic rug, taking a seat with her legs crossed and her feet tucking under her opposite knees.

in all honesty, sofia’s presence somewhat unnerved her-- not that she disliked her, by any means, only that the air of superiority she gave off made dorothy feel awkward, unrefined. “wine? ahaha, yeah, wasn’t something i really... thought of, anyways.” she licks her lips, reaching into the basket and pulling out one of the jam sandwiches. “i mean, i just think the graffiti here is really nice. like, i get that it’s not the best art around, but it just stands out to me as an underappreciated art form. it’s vandalism, i guess, but i think maybe if the artists focused their efforts onto their own canvasses, there’d be less of a stigma? oh, but then it wouldn’t be graffiti, then, just reminiscent of the style. is there something you’ve got against the skate part?”

ella loved picnic’s, she really did, but with the skate park right next to them, the whirring and whizzing of wheels, this was something totally new to her. taking a seat on the checkered, plastic blanket, she reached into the the basket for a drink. “the juice boxes are cute,” she admitted. truth be told, she had been looking forward to a picnic as well. she popped a piece of popcorn into her mouth a took a sip of juice. “so like, do you come here to skate at all? or just enjoy the view?” ella inquired. “i wish i could do tricks like that, but i don’t think i ever could.” ella wasn’t very adventurous in her outside activities, and she wanted to change that.

“i know, aren’t they?” truth be told, in planning for the venture she had visited the supermarket almost daily, seeking out petite goodies and only the most visually appealing snacks to adorn the basket. “skate here? no, no. i’m really uncoordinated and bad with balance, i can’t skate at all! the graffiti is very nice, though. it’s art in its own way, don’t you agree?” dorothy gave ella a smile as she reached into the basket and pulled out a container with fruit inside. the craving for raspberries was not an unusual one, especially for her on days like these.

    in all honesty addison had never been on a picnic before; however, she had seen them in movies and she’s fairly certain that they aren’t supposed to be had at skate-parks. she may have grown up with an older brother, but skate-boarding was never one of the actions that she’d grown up around ( her brother was more of a scooter man, actually ). but it is hard to turn down apple juice boxes, despite her rather healthy nature actual apple juice is too concentrated for her and gives her stomach pains, so the fake juice is perfect to satisfy her need for the taste. “i mean who can turn down apple juice boxes, amirite?” the blonde sits herself down on the blanket once it’s on the ground, trying to find a comfortable position. “aren’t picnics usually held in grassy, park-like areas. with trees and bushes? not that i’m complaining or anything! just an honest question as i’ve never actually been taken on a picnic before.”

there’s a certain type of nostalgia laced throughout this for dorothy; no matter how much she instructs herself to not miss her hometown, the ache for ferndale prevails. she’d have picnics at least every other week with her friends, consuming whatever goods they could scrounge up enough cash to purchase from the corner store closest to firemans park. a part of growing up is letting all that go. that being said, dorothy was by no means grown up, and so looked for nostalgia wherever she could find it. “i know, oh my gosh! all these artificial sugars are probably killing me, but it’s a sweet, fruity death that i’m willing to accept.” dorothy begins peeping into the basket, sifting through sandwiches and other bagged goods for a container of sliced fruit. “what? oh, probably. i just thought a change of scenery would be nice. and i think it is! would you like some fruit? there’s... bananas slices, apple slices, grapes, orange... slices? if not, there’s a bunch more stuff in the basket.”

“are you sure? I think we may get run over by skateboarders while we’re over here.” elisabetta chuckles and scans the area for a a safer option. she’s never been to the skate park before and the large amount of skaters seems a bit overwhelming. though, she’’s all for dorothy’s idea for having a picnic here. it’s actually quite fun to watch the skaters do tricks {but it’s not so fun to watch some of them fall.} as dorothy sits down, the blonde changes her mind. “okay, okay, here works. but if I get run over by a skater it’s your fault,” betta jokes as she sits down.

“i’d ask them for the slightest bit of decency to allow us to enjoy this meal, you see,” she says, letting the words drip off her tongue though she shan’t string together any bit of sense. dorothy grabs at the picnic basket, gently setting the top back and pulling out the sandwiches. the square tubs that contained them were a lucky find, only located after hours of scouring her kitchen cupboards. she passes one container to betta, using her left thumb to crack open her own. raspberry jam was a delicacy, was it not? “oh please, don’t you think we can hold our own against them? i used to play softball, you know. i’m not a bodybuilder by any means, but i can be s t r o n g.”

“no, no, listen, this is a great idea.” in her arms is a picnic basket, with a red-and-white checkered blanket draped over top. surprisingly (or perhaps not?) her arms do not buckle beneath the weight of jam sandwiches with the crusts cut off, and popcorn still slightly warm in little plastic baggies. was highrise skate park the most conventional spot for a picnic? well, no, but to dorothy, the grinding background noise was something she could indulge in. “come on, sit, sit! there’s plenty here, and i’ve even got apple juice boxes. i’ve practically been waiting for this for forever.” with that, she takes the blanket off the basket, shaking it out and placing it on the ground.

Kai pulled the hood of her raincoat down as she stepped into her small office (which was pretty much the size of a closet) as the rain pattered so hard of the roof, it felt like the shack could’ve been practically shaking. She hated work at this time of year. Nobody really ever went to the beach, so she normally just kept up with making sure all of the supplies were neat and in check, then went out along the stretch of the beach to pick up litter that had managed to reach the sandy shores.

The blonde let out a short sigh, grabbing one of the trash bags from its designated drawer and the garbage picker she had leaning against the wall before pulling the hood back up on her raincoat. She ventured out into the rain on the beach and began to stab at any plastic bottles or napkins that scattered the shore before the angry waves tried to drown the trash. It was then that she had noticed somebody standing along the shore, maybe a football field away from her. Why would somebody come to the beach on a day like this?

She tried to mind her own business and continued to pick up the trash, glancing over at the figure every now and then to see if they had moved.

she wasn’t a frequenter of the beach. not much anymore. the past few months had been a time of reminiscence-- a quiet, disjointed existence from the rest of the world. she could still be found in her apartment, painting swirls onto canvasses and playing vinyls on her crosley; her presence was soft, glowing, yet not unheard of. as the hours turned to days, days to weeks, and weeks to months, there was an ache that made her crave for something different. not necessarily new, just different from the monotony of the past.

so, today, dorothy found herself at the beach. it was a heaven, in and of itself; the peace that came on days like these. the rain was cooling, the bleak landscaped stretched out before her. edge of the world, they called it. and, honestly, it was a type of isolation that felt right. except, now, she could see that it wasn’t isolation at all. there was another figure walking down the shoreline, whisking away garbage that littered the ground.

“hey,” she calls out, cupping her mouth with her hands. “what are you up to?” it was only standard greeting in ferndale, after all.

venus was relieved at the lack of anger or pain in the other girl as she listened to her words, “yes! it’s simply a SOCIAL construct. one that’s been passed on and shared much more than so many other ideas that could have been equally as important as the concept of time is to us today. but now we’ll never know. who k n o w s? we could have a brand new concept in about 30 years and time will just be a thing of the past. it truly is incredibly interesting.” she nodded and readjusted her now askew telescope. “well, good. i’m glad you’re not too hurt.” she paused, “you’re not hurt right? i’m venus, nice to meet you.”

“ah, it’s really so...” somehow, she finds herself l o s t in the words of the venus, as if she just wasn’t rambling on about the goon that created seconds. “it’s so absurd. all the technology around us is just moving on so fast, i feel like i’m being left in the dust.” the acknowledging dip of her head follows the other’s introduction. “nice to meet you, venus! where are you headed to, anyway, with that big ol’ thing?” there’s so many more questions racing through her mind, but she starts small.

     “do you suppose i have to stop wearing my christmas hat now that the holiday’s over? i don’t know about you but i think i absolutely rock it. and besides, it is still cold out, no? i need something to keep my little head warm.” he smooths one hand through the cap’s fuzzy white lining while the other holds his phone an arm’s distance away so he could properly view himself in the camera. “speaking of, did you have a good holiday? visit home? argue politics with a drunk uncle?”

“s’just a hat,” she says, tilting her head some. “i dunno what some other people think, but i think christmas hats are so cute!” it’s something she can really stand by. the holidays are such a happy time for her, containing little childish joys within all of her memories. “keep wearing it! oh, visit home? no, i didn’t. not too close with the family any more, but it was nice staying in brighton. skies look extra pretty with all the holiday joy, you get me? what’d you do, anyway?”
