// That’s it. I can’t take this anymore.
// I’m leaving this blog for now. Maybe forever. I can’t handle all of the stress/tension from stuff happening all the time. I’m so sorry if anyone thinks I’m a wuss or a terrible person, but I just can’t do this. All of the vague-ing, all of the attacking…This isn’t a healthy for anyone. It’s scary.
// People are terrifying. I don’t want to get in the middle of it. It just makes me really sick thinking that I could get stuff thrown at me, too, just for being related.
// This isn’t safe for me.

“Ah, Motonari won’t know what hit em. You worry too much.”
A smirk formed on the larger tactician’s lips as he leans back with ease. He wasn’t worried in the slightest, but knowing about Hanbei’s little time, he supposed he would see the worry. Turning his head, he heard the scampering of feet and laughing pass by the door. He smiled again.
“Seems like he’s got his hands full. Might as well get anything else we’ve got outta the way before Hideyoshi asks us about our next courses of action.”
Sceaming over the map, Kanbei rubs the back of his neck seeing no problem in their plans, but back ups were always good. He turn to Hanbei, knowing the other probably had a few up his sleeve.
“Well, I think our plans are solid, but you have any back ups if it goes a stray?”
Hanbei hadn’t expected Kanbei to be so prompt like this. His insistence on getting things done made him feel more confident about his position in their ranks. His own attention was only slightly diverted by the sounds outside. His fondness for the little ones had grown quite a bit since they’d been there, and though he hated to admit it, they had potential. It seemed Hideyoshi’s judgement had been right as it usually was about this things.
Turning his attention back to the task at hand, he looked over the map once more and nodded.
✾ “In case this plan turns sour, I suggest implementing a contingency plan to send a small group around here...”
As he said it, he dragged his finger along the path he thought would be most accurate. He didn’t expect a betrayal so soon, but one could never be too cautious. He would rather have a plan in place than be caught in a bad situation.
Breathing out a quiet sigh when the tactician didn’t answer her question, the mermaid tilted her head back completely so she could see the apologetic expression. Seems as if it really wasn’t that simple after all, huh?
“Hanbei…”
How come that name sounded familiar? Had she heard one of the guards say it before? Or maybe a soldier as they walked through the gates? Probably, but Maria didn’t exactly think so… Oh! She quickly perked up in the water upon remembering: Mitsunari! He had told her about a “Lord Hanbei” before and how he had been ill. So this was him? It was still a surprise that someone here was so calming- and could smile at that.
“It’s nice to meet you too. Um… How are you feeling? Did Mitsunari happen to give you those scales?” Knowing that man, probably not.
Hanbei wasn’t surprised that Mitsunari had mentioned him at least in passing. He was always trying his hardest to please him and make sure that he was fairing well. Whether it was simply to gain his favor or it was genuine care didn’t matter. He appreciated the action more than the reason.
When she mentioned the scales, he did seem surprised. First, he thought of how she could have known about it. Shortly after, he realized it made sense. Where else would they have come from? Mitsunari’s area of expertise was on the battlefield, and not even Yoshitsugu had been able to come up with it. (He’d asked.) That only left their unwilling visitor. Anyone else would have stepped up to take credit if it had been their doing.
Even so, he answered her questions plainly, setting his musings aside.
✾ “...Yes, much better. Was it you who gave them to Mitsunari?”

✾ “Help!”
Someone tell Hideyoshi. Hanbei is in distress.
Kanbei wasn’t too fond of the kids just yet, but that was because he wasn’t much of a child type. They were too loud, but they were all children at one time were they not?
“Well, the drill should be finished within a matter of days. My men have been working rather diligently on it….”
Kanbei was proud and the man was allowed to have his pride. Sometimes, most times, things didn’t go so swimmingly for him. His ‘bad luck’ would mostly rear it’s ugly head around the corner smack him. Hard.
“We could take it out for a test some point with the next week…”
Kanbei tapped his brush against the map resting on the table staring at it with intensity.
“These plans definitely need some replanning before we make our next move… If Motonari decides to turn on us, which knowing him he will, we’ll be put in a bad spot…”
Hanbei had hoped it would be done sooner, but he couldn’t speed the process himself. This was fine. As far as he was concerned, there was enough time to wait for it. When push came to shove, it would be advantageous to wait for perfection on this device.
As far as he could see, there weren’t any flaws with what Kanbei had put onto the map, but he did see something that could serve as a backup plan. He reminded himself to correct his own charts once he was finished here. He lifted his finger and dragged it in a circle around the area of interest. This was where things would grow in intensity. Their movements would have to be careful when they made it to this point physically. On paper, it was easy to say things would go well. One could never tell until they were in the heat of things, but as much as he could, Hanbei prepared for all situations he could think of.
✾ “It is an absolute... Our informant confirmed his plan of action in a letter I received a few days ago. When he turns, what he will be faced with will be the exact opposite of the surprised army he is hoping for...”
“If i’m not, then why can’t I leave?”
It was a simple request to her, wasn’t it? The mermaid just wanted to get outside of those gates, and maybe find a lake nearby or something to actually swim in before going to Oshu. Even a river was more comfortable than this pond. The only spots that weren’t cramped was on the grass beside it to stretch that long fin, or on the floor where she could rest.
Golden colored hues slowly glanced back up at the other crouched beside the pond, fins remained laying flat as she began to think. Did he mean introduction wise, or something else? Maria wasn’t entirely sure, but she felt like she could at least be polite to this man.
He was obviously a lot calmer than a few others around this place, that’s for sure-
“… I could try?” Fins slowly perked back up now. “My name is Maria.”
Hanbei couldn’t truthfully answer her question, so he didn’t answer at all. He did do his best to look regretful about the situation, though. It was best if she felt someone was on her side after encountering so many that seemed to be watching her every move for one mistake. Honestly, he wouldn’t be surprised if upon seeing what they’d consider a mistake, the others wouldn’t hesitate to do something to her.
That would be unfortunate.
✾ “Maria... That is an unusual name.”
Lifting a hand to his chest in a gesture toward himself, he smiled.
✾ “I am Takenaka Hanbei... It is a pleasure to finally meet you.”
“You are really excited about this, aren’t you?”
Kanbei was laid back against the floor when Hanbei had entered. He really hadn’t expected the second tactician to be in his quarters so early, but it is Hanbei he was talking about. This kind of thing should have bee expected.
Kanbei moved himself off the floor and cracked his neck once, than back again. He put his attention on the blue prints for this drill machine he had his crew working on, tapping it lightly with his finger as Hanbei made his way inside.
“Apologizes for the mess. Would have cleaned up a bit if I knew you’d be poppin’ your head in so early. I suppose I’ll be as ready as ever since you are already here…”
Kanbei let out a semi-loud yawn, stretching himself out before eyes peered through his hair and at Hanbei.
“Takin’ Yoshitsugu’s watching the squirts?”
Mess? Well, Hanbei had expected that. He knew whose quarters he’d been stepping into. He found a relatively clear space and knelt down. This was a more fitting position in which to discuss tactics. Standing over someone was intimidating, and though he was good at that, he didn’t intend to come off that way during this session at least. He wasn’t expecting disappointment, but anything could happen.
He was fascinated with the way Kanbei thought, so seeing what he had come up with would prove interesting. Some of his methods were unusual, and even if he was confident in his own abilities, learning something new was always a possibility.
✾ “Naturally.”
Which question was he even answering? Both? Both.
