A Spooky Post for Halloween: the Ghost Front and Creepy Corner 👻

In the early days of December, the Ardennes Forest was quiet. Unnaturally so.

Troops would occasionally hear the telltale groaning of tanks and heavy weaponry, but it never came near... Patrols would find prints in the snow—ski tracks, pawprints—but would never see a soul...

Allied Forces nicknamed it "the Ghost Front."

Near the town of Lanzerath, the 394th occupied a position in a supremely isolated part of the line. The unnatural stillness of the area, the silence, and the endless snow and dark, towering forest earned the area the name "Creepy Corner."

"An extended state of fear existed. Your imagination tried to run away with your eyes as you would stare at the form of a tree against the snow during the nights. Every once in a while this tree would seem to move and suddenly 'attack you.' The days and nights ran together..." said 1st. Lt. Lyle Bouck [64].

Creepy Corner drove the men to near breakdowns, and they couldn't wait to be relieved. Unfortunately for the men of the 394th, they would soon discover that the Ghost Front was very, very real....

I saw operation mincemeat this weekend, and it was TRULY incredible. Genuinely a breathtaking show that is full of wit, cleverness, and so much heart. And the cast is so, so lovely. I was especially excited to meet Natasha Hodgson, and she was just as wonderful as you would imagine. Truly an incredible experience.
