/apparated home to her little flat
/not the same flat she lived in with Remus
/although it looked similar
/small kitchen, familiar portraits lining the hallways
/minus all of the ones with them, anyway
/with the exception of two, the portrait of the first order, and one with everyone at graduation
/her hair newly died, Remus' arms wrapped around her, both of them grinning like idiots
/it hurt to look at it now
/it hurt to look at *him* now
/the meeting had gone as all meetings did
/Dumbledore was absent, Moody calling the shots. Sirius, and Merlin it was still so weird to see him, back and so different
/back and without James
/and then there was Remus, tired, handsome old Remus
/nothing particularly spectacular occured, everyone was filled in on everything
/looking at Remus felt like the beginning of seventh all over again
/but this time she had the knowledge that they had in fact shared so much
/had ended it on tense, grief stricken terms
/tried not to think about it as she busied herself in her kitchen
/pouring tea, settling at the table
/unwillingly making more comparisons to these new meetings and the old
/the meetings with Lily and James, Sirius, Peter, Marlene, Doe, Mary, Hestia
/the meetings with Remus sitting beside her, holding her hand, their knees brushing, secret smiles admist the tense discussions
/it was a dangerous time but it had been a happy time
/then Lily was pregant, Alice was pregnant, friend after friend was killed
/Sirius went to Azkaban, Peter betrayed them. Harry left their lives. And Remus, oh Remus...
/fed up with herself, she pours the rest of her tea in the sink and slinks off to bed
/changes into pajamas, slinks under the covers and lets sleep come
/and she dreams
James Potter says
/emerges out of nowhere, his hands in his pockets, staring at the place he was told she would appear in her dream
/Lily hadn't been able to come with him, and this unnerved him slightly
/they were never away from each other
/but he had to come see Emme, he had to tell her, to be there for her
/she had been his confidant; he had told her everything and had known she would listen
/he couldn't be that for her, not anymore, he hadn't been able to for years, not the way he was supposed to be
/but he would manage
/he would come to her in her dreams
/and he would smile
/and Emme would just know; she was smart; she would understand
/takes a deep breath, exhaling slowly and smiling when she gets deep enough into her sleep to appear
Emme.
Emmeline Vance says
/doesn't know if she's only just started dreaming or if she's in the middle of one
/but she's in a warm room, the features slowly becoming defined
/but the importance of her surroundings diminishes at the sound of her name being called
/the voice so familiar tears spring to her eyes
/and she looks around to see him
James.
/a hand up to her mouth, she's trying really hard not to cry
/not to waste this
What are you doing here?
James Potter says
/grins hard at her, wishing he could hug her, hold her hand, something
/but looks down at his own form, a shade or two more opaque than her own, and must repress a sigh
/but he shall not ruin this, and so he keeps up his smile
Visiting you, of course.
Emmeline Vance says
/wants to run over and hug him
/he was always so touchy feely
/the only person she felt comfortable being that way with
/in a different way than Remus of course
/he was just James
I miss you so much. And Lily, and I'm so sorry I...
/sniffles, swipes at her eyes
He's beautiful James, Harry's so beautiful and brave.
James Potter says
/bites his lip, thankful that, in death, tears can not come
/but at the same time mourns the loss of his life, just like every time anyone brings up Harry
/he should be there with him, fighting by his side, teaching him the ropes, helping him beat off the birds with a stick, going to his quidditch games, always the loudest parent
/takes a step closer to her, a sad smile now painted on his lips
I miss you too. Lily is wonderful, don't worry. I'm taking care of her.
As for Harry... My son. Do you talk to him a lot?
/can't resist the urge to ask about Harry, despite that not being what he's here for
Emmeline Vance says
I know you are,
/smiles despite herself, remembers the day she gave him that speech
/that silly day he ran crazy around the castle
/and she had to tell him she'd dismember him if he ever broke her heart
/of course he was taking care of her, wonderful Lily
Not as much as I want to. He's been with his Petunia and the Walrus, and Dumbledore
/she frowns, unwilling to drag others into this
/she'd come to terms with him not letting Harry stay with her and Remus
/from him not allowing them any contact
/to keep him safe in ignorance
/it had taken a long while, a hard toll on her and Remus and their relationship
I brought him to Sirius', with the rest of the Order. He's a brilliant flyer, James.
/smiles but pauses
He wants to fight. He's just like you and Lily, sometimes it scares me. But he's so brave and strong.
/sighs
James Potter says
He's our son. Did you expect anything less?
/grinning, then steps forward and takes her hand, knowing the warmth is absent from his touch, but hoping she none the less is able to get the conveyed message
Emme, luv.
I'm sorry we haven't visited before.
We... can't.
It's complex.
/sighs, looking down
But I'm here now, and I've come for a reason.
/steadies himself
/does not mean to say what he says, but as soon as it's out of his mouth, knows it was the right thing to say
You still love Remus.
/it's not a question
Emmeline Vance says
/thankful for his presence, his hand on hers
/but it reminds her that things are not the same
/and her soft, grateful smile falters
/shakes her head when he apologizes for something that isn't his fault
/almost expects what he says next, from the way he set himself up
/sighs
Of course I do,
/frowns
James Potter says
/suddenly loses what he wanted to say and grins stupidly
You think being dead would mean you never forgot what you were going to say.
/laughs, the sound just like it was when he was alive
/eternally thankful death does not takes voices
Emmeline Vance says
/shakes her head at his joking
/same old James
/everything about him
/he's just as alive in the sense of the word as he was before
James Potter says
/takes her other hand, biting his lip
What if I told you it wasn't meant to be? Would that help?
/shakes his head
Probably not.
We're afforded a bit of knowledge, the dead.
We can't see a lot, actually, it's extremely frustrating. But we can watch.
Emme, you're suffering in silence.
/squeezes her hands
My strong little Gryffindor, putting everyone above herself like always.
Emmeline Vance says
It's not like he doesn't know,
/she starts, mumbling almost, eyes averted before looking back up at him
He can't *not* know. I haven't said anything, but it's all the same. Seventh all over again. I know we can't be together. I know now exactly what I can't have, which is what makes it hurt even more. But it's not...you're right. It just...wasn't meant.
I'll always love him. Time hasn't changed that. And I miss him even when he's sitting across that damned table from me. But he has his own life, and I have mine. I think he might be falling for someone else, and all the while I can't not regret that we let it die.
James Potter says
/decides not to say anything about Tonks
I watch Remus sometimes.
/starts out softly
And yeah, he is.
/makes his voice stronger
But that doesn't mean you two can't be friends, does it?
Fuck, this sounds bad, Emme, I wish I could do more, but...
Tonks.
/can't not tell her now that he sees firsthand how much she's hurting
It's Tonks.
Sirius' cousin.
Emmeline Vance says
/sniffs
/it almost hurts more to hear him confirm it, but she nods through her tears
I...
/nods, sees the way he looks at her, steals glances
He peeks at her the way he used to peek at me. That little thing he used to do. I have to stop myself sometimes from just...sitting beside him. Curling up to him like we used to...
I'll always be his friend.
Just not the same kind of friend I was before I loved him.
/wipes at her eyes
He'll always have me. Just...in the background.
James Potter says
/bites his lip
Emme.
/pulls her into his arms
/knowing he hasn't much time left anyway and can do whatever the hell he wants
/rubs her back, kisses her forehead
Emmeline Vance says
/breaks down in his arms
/hates that she's sobbing
/wasting time and energy with him
/but she's needed this, needed this hug and his words and friendship for so long
I miss you.
James Potter says
I miss you too.
Emmeline Vance says
We'll win this thing. And I'll see you two again. /nods firmly, snuggling her head into his shoulder one last time
James Potter says
You have my son now. Harry. He's the best of Lily and I. He'll be perfect. You'll win. It'll work out.
/not sure if he believes what he's saying, but he just hates to see her sad
/feels a tug on his navel and squeezes her tightly, perhaps too tightly, but his strength if fading and he thinks she can tell
Emmeline Vance says
He has my life, James. I'll protect him with my life. I'll go down fighting.
James Potter says
I know you will.
If I could, I'd be crying too.
/makes a stab at a weak joke and knows how pathetic was
My time is almost up.
Emmeline Vance says
/almost laughs at his joke
Tell Lily I love her. I love you, James.
James Potter says
I will. I love you, Emme. You're amazing. /smooths her hair
I'm with you, Emme. In here, /points to her heart
We're with you. Lily too.
I'll come visit again as soon as I can. And I'll try to bring Lily.
/steps away from her, knowing that he is rapidly fading and knowing how much trouble he'll be in for hugging her
/they aren't supposed to touch the living, repurcussions have been known to happpen
/seers have been made, premonitions have been given, they are sometimes just generally more in touch with the dead
You're strong, Emme.
I know you are.
You'll get through this.
I love you.
Emmeline Vance says
/nods at his words, tears flowly freely
James Potter says
/smiles
Emmeline Vance says
Love you.
/watches as he fades away
/wakes with a start, head buried in her pillow
/lifts her head, hand to her burning eyes
/the pillow is wet
/crying in her sleep
James Potter says
/hand over his mouth, shocked to find his eyes wet
/sometimes the feelings are powerful enough
You're strong enough, Emme. I know you are.
/met up with Lily almost immediately after, lifting her off her feet and holding her to him tightly, telling her all about Emme, how much she's hurting
/finds out the next day that Emme is to die later that year
