You glanced at the clock as you threw your book down on your bed. It only took until the early hours of the morning to finish it, but you were glad you stayed up for too many more chapters. Quietly, you slipped out of bed and down the hallway to the kitchen for a drink before you tried to sleep.
On your way back, you tripped over Pietro’s shoes in the hallway. Though you didn’t fall, it wasn’t your most elegant maneuver, and you hoped your mishap was a quiet one.
A door quickly extinguished those hopes as it slid open to your right. Loki stood before you with his lips curled into a grimace. His brilliant eyes seemed to glow as he glared at you. Despite his obvious anger, you couldn’t help but stare at him in the semidarkness. The difference between how he appeared normally and right now was stark and you couldn’t decide which one was better; though you loved Loki’s crisp black suits, his grey sweatpants and tight black t-shirt were a delicious sight. His blue eyes narrowed as he noticed your staring.
“Is there any reason you are thundering through the area like a battlefield?”
Your face burned. “Oh Loki, I’m so sorry, I tripped over something.”
He glowered. “Shocking. Do you think you can make it to your room without another catastrophe? Some of us are trying to sleep.”
Your voice sounded small as you sputtered out another apology.
Loki scoffed at you and said nothing, disappearing into the darkness of his room.
You tiptoed back to your room and slipped through your door as silently as you could, though you were sure the pounding of your heart against your ribs was louder than the chaos you caused in the hallway. Quickly, you slipped into your bed and tried to will yourself to sleep. It proved fruitless though; Loki and his pyjamas flashed behind your eyelids when you closed them, sending a jolt of electricity through your veins every time.
The next morning felt heavy against your bones as you drooped over your coffee mug.
“Well you look terrible,” Nat said as she sat down beside you. You groaned at her and she chuckled.
“What, couldn’t sleep?”
“I’m surprised anyone could sleep with the infernal ruckus last night,” a smooth voice said and you fought the heat rising to your face as Loki pulled the chair out across from you and sat down.
If he was missing sleep because of you, you couldn’t notice. He looked glorious in his midnight black suit, his pale skin even and smooth in the morning sunlight. You sighed, knowing you were a compete opposite to that right now, with your messy pjs and puffy eyes; it just wasn’t fair that he always got to look so good. His eyes roamed over you quickly and he smirked.
“Did the noise keep you up as well, (Y/N)?” He asked and your skin flamed at his faux innocence.
“No, I finished reading my book. The night got away from me.”
His smile widened, as though he knew there was more to your excuse than you mentioned, but he said nothing, watching you carefully over his steaming mug.
“Come on, (Y/N), you have a training session with Thor,” Natasha said.
“Oh great,” you whined and she chuckled.
“What? You’re not excited to be thrown around by a big, sweaty, god? Count me in,” she joked.
You glanced at Loki quickly, who sat with his back pin straight and staring determinedly into his tea, before glaring at your friend. “Ew gross, no thanks. You know Thor is most certainly not my type.”
She shrugged, undeterred. “Maybe he should be.”
“He is a loveable, goofy, golden retriever,” you argued and she crossed her arms as she watched you.
“A golden retriever could be good for you,” she started but was quickly cut off by Loki abruptly standing, shoving his chair back, and stalking down the hallway toward his room. You stared at him as he left, mouth parted in confusion.
“Wow, wonder what that was about. I mean, I know he’s always broody but wow, he can turn on a dime.”
A smile ghosted across Nat’s face. “I don’t know, something obviously upset him.”
“Well,” you sighed in defeat, “let’s go get this training done.”
“Go wrestle your god,” she joked, her eyes sparkling with mischief.
You laughed at her despite the heat settling in your stomach at her comment. Even though you knew she meant it about Thor, your mind immediately jumped to raven hair and pale skin. As she followed you out, she smiled to herself and glanced down the hallway toward Loki’s room, where she could hear a door slamming shut in frustration.

The penthouse was crowded with people as the party in your honor raged through the night. It was easy to see why people were always desperate for an invite; Tony had gone all out, as he usually did, in the evening’s festivities.
The rest of the Avengers were there and seeing them all in one place made you realize how much the team had expanded; additions like Sam, Bucky, Wanda, and Pietro continued to swell the number of heroes in New York.
You laughed to yourself as you watched Pietro zip around the room, grinning at every woman in his orbit. Nat sidled up to lean against the wall next to you, a beer bottle clasped in her hand.
“Enjoying the party?” She asked and you grinned at her.
“Everything here is absolutely amazing!” You trilled and she smiled at your enthusiasm.
“Tony’s parties never disappoint,” said a voice above you and you looked up to find Clint dropping down next to you from seemingly nowhere.
“I bet not.”
“Barton! Come and have a drink with us!” Thor yelled from the bar and you glanced over at him, looking dapper in his velvet jacket, and Loki beside him, looking stunning in a tailored black suit.
Clint grinned and nodded at you and Nat before making his way to the bar. You ignored him completely, too caught up in staring at Loki as he stared out the tower window.
The rest of the party was loud, overcrowded, and lively. You couldn’t stop the smile dancing along your face as the evening ramped down, leaving just the team members in the pent house. As the chaos slowed, you started to clean up the mess.
“Hey Powerhouse, just leave the mess, the bots will get it,” Tony called.
“Yeah, (Y/N), watch this,” Steve added, his eyes bright.
Tony’s team of robots wandered through the rooms, moving the furniture and cleaning up the remnants of the night.
“Amazing, isn’t it?” He said more to himself than you but you couldn’t help but agree with him.
“Technology has changed so much from what you’re used to,” you mused, “it must be quite a change.”
“We still don’t have a flying car,” Bucky grumbled from Steve’s other side and you tried to keep the grin from your face.
“In Asgard, we have many transportation devices that can fly,” Thor added from the couch and beside him, Loki rolled his eyes.
“Brother,” he clipped out, “I have interacted with the mortals and participated in your mandatory team celebrations. May I retire to my chambers or am I still required to listen to the Midgardians’ prattle?”
Thor stared at Loki for a moment before sighing with disappointment. “I am not sure how much participation you’ve actually completed but yes Loki, you can go.”
You watched the younger god interestedly as the two spoke. Without another word Loki rose from the couch to escape the Avengers, locking eyes with you as he did. When you didn’t look away, his lip curled downward, as though he were staring at a meal gone rancid. Then he slipped out of the room down the same hallway that led toward your room.
“Loki is adjusting quite well to becoming an Avenger!” Thor said, looking at you and you raised your eyebrows at his enthusiasm.
“Is that what you’d call adjusting well?”
“He has not stabbed anyone since he has arrived.”
“Not for lack of trying,” Tony quipped, and you had to fight the smile creeping onto your face at his words.
Thor stood and clasped his massive hand onto your shoulder. “Come, friend (Y/N), let us search for our coveted post celebration snack: Stark’s PopTarts!”

A/N: It’s forever 2012 in the Avengers tower on this blog
It was hard to pay attention to Tony’s words as he gave you a tour of the tower; everything was just so new and exciting, you couldn’t focus on anything he’d said about your new home. Captain America was sitting at a table with a tablet in hand just eight feet away from you and Agent Romanoff was near the window talking to the vents? It was all so fun and exhilarating, and made it impossible to listen to his directions to the kitchen. Tony, noticing your distraction, smirked at you as he turned to face you behind him.
“Got all that, kid? It’ll be on the on-boarding quiz.”
You froze. “Oh,” you hummed, your face heating, “I’m sorry, Mr. Stark, I don’t have all that.”
His smirk widened. “I know you don’t. You look like you wish you had eight more eyes to take everything in.”
Nodding your head in a resurgence of excitement, you grinned at him. “This is all so cool! I mean, they’re all here and they live here and I get to live here and—”
“Easy there, powerhouse,” he cut you off. “It sure sounds like you and the spiderling will get along.”
“Spiderling?”
“Yeah, Peter. He gets just as excited as you when he visits. He’s not a full Avenger yet, more like a trainee, but you’ll like him; it’ll be like having a baby brother.”
A breathless voice cut in with a whine. “I’m not really a baby brother, I’m seventeen.” The young boy’s brown eyes found yours as he walked over and extended his hand. “You must be, (Y/N), the new Avenger. I’m Peter.”
You shook his hand. “The spiderling?”
His shoulders sagged. “Spiderman.”
“Well Spiderman, it’s nice to meet you.”
Tony clapped him on the shoulder. “We have to go meet the rest of the team. You can mingle at the welcoming party tonight.” Peter’s eyes brightened at the invitation.
“Okay, bye Mr. Stark, bye (Y/N)!”
You waved at him as Tony led you toward the group that had assembled near the bar in the corner.
“Avengers, this is (Y/N). (Y/N), this is everyone.”
As you glanced around at the group, you found they needed no introductions: Captain America, Black Widow, Hawkeye, and Falcon were all standing in front of you! The excitement flirted with nerves as it coursed through your veins and you couldn’t stop the childish grin as it spread across your cheeks.
“It’s nice to meet you, (Y/N), I’m Steve,” Captain America said as he shook your hand. Everyone else introduced themselves by their first name and you had to fight the urge to cartwheel through the room.
“Stark, you did not say our newest Avenger would be joining us this day!” A voice boomed and you looked over to see Thor grinning in your direction, as he strode in, a box of PopTarts in his massive hand. Behind him trailed a tall, lithe man with dark hair and an even darker expression on his pale face.
Loki.
The god who tried to conquer New York.
Tony told you he had been sent to work with the Avengers, placed under Thor’s charge, to atone for his misdeeds, but you were still surprised to see him out of handcuffs or without battle armor.
It was hard to look away from him even as Thor introduced himself and his brother to you. You forced yourself to be polite, and after a few seconds of Thor’s jovial nature, you found yourself close to giddy again.
“So, (Y/N), how are you liking the tower?” Natasha asked.
You beamed. “It’s amazing! It has so many interesting things! Like Jarvis! Oh, and the science lab! Have you seen the science lab? And the training deck has any equipment you can think of using! It’s all just so amazing!”
Tony preened, his ego fed for the moment by your excited words.
“See, what did I tell you? She’s a perfect addition to the team,” he boasted.
“We’ll see how she fares in battle,” Thor said, tossing his box of PopTarts on the table beside him. “Come, friend (Y/N), we’ll test your might.”
You grinned and glanced at Tony, oblivious to Loki’s curious glare. “I think I love it here.”
"Darling, what exactly are we doing here?" he questioned as his grey eyes roamed over the tables lined up beneath the mismatched canopies.
She grinned brightly as she gently squeezed their entwined fingers. "I love the farmers market! I've been visiting this one every fall since I was a toddler."
"Except the years we were at school," he mused, still glancing warily at the large crowd of muggles moving throughout the stalls.
"Except the years we were at school," she agreed. “It would be hard to visit the farmers market from across the Atlantic.” Then she dropped his hand and hurried excitedly over to the stall selling hot apple cider, leaving him to wait in the middle of the aisle. Draco froze where she left him, the crowds parting around him as he waited for her.
She returned quickly, with two large cups and a bright smile, and the sight had his stoic hesitation slowly melting into loving confusion as he took the cup she offered.
"I still can't see how you find this enjoyable."
"Think of it like Diagon Alley but most of the goods are homemade or consumable."
"With a lot more muggles."
"With a lot more muggles," she agreed but pressed on. "That aren't going to bother you."
He nodded and extended his free hand slightly, which she slipped into her own and grinned brightly at him, the happiness dancing in her eyes enough to pull a small smile across his pale face, despite the unease unfurling in his chest at the crowd.
“What else did you want to try?”
She grinned and yanked him back into the crowd toward the little stall dedicated to sweaters made by a kind looking woman with curly white hair. Draco milled about looking at them but couldn’t help but flinch every time someone passed behind him in the crowded booth. It wasn’t until his grip tightened to a vice around her hand that she noticed he was more stoic than typical for him.
Stopping quickly, she turned back to look at him. Noticing his discomfort, she pulled him gently toward a less crowded section of the market.
“I’m sorry, Draco,” she cooed, “are you okay?”
He looked away from her worried eyes. “I’m fine, darling, we can continue your shopping.”
“Draco,” she drawled. “You’re doing it again.”
He sighed and looked back at her, the girl who deserved openness. The girl who gave him kindness when he knew he didn’t deserve it. The girl who made him want to live. And though it took much more willpower than he thought he possessed, he knew he owed her honesty.
“The crowds are just a bit… much for me.”
Without hesitation she stepped closer to him, past the walls he’d so meticulously built. Looking into his stormy eyes, she reached up and gently cupped his pale cheek with her hand.
“Thank you for trying this with me, but I’d like to go home now.”
“No you wouldn’t,” he spat, “I’ve just ruined the morning enough to make us leave.”
A smile ghosted across her face. “You haven’t ruined anything. You made my entire day trying this with me and I don’t have to be here all day to appreciate the time or effort you’ve given today.”
Draco stared at her, not knowing what to say, as the swell of affection at her unyielding understanding washed through him.
Her smile widened, the depths of love in her eyes a sight Draco never wanted to forget. “I’d like you to take me home please, Draco.”
When she looked at him like that, he would take her anywhere.
Yessss! I love YWU! I find myself looking over your blog for updates! :) I’ve been a fan since you started it! My boy Embry doesn’t get much attention, and your series is my favorite! Please update when you can!
Thank you so much for following YWU since it has been started, I'm really glad you enjoy it! I've been working on part 25 so hopefully that'll be out this month.
It had taken weeks. Weeks for Embry to finally return your beloved copy of your favorite book. Every time you mentioned the book, hoping to subtly remind him that he’d borrowed a piece of your heart, his cheeks would flame that delicious red color and he’d mumble at his feet. He’d only gotten to borrow your book in the first place because he was so sweet in your English Lit class last year. Despite his sweetness, and the crush you’d had on him since you’d met, you couldn’t help the annoyance dancing through you at the book being gone for so long.
After weeks of it missing, you were happy to return the book to its place on the center shelf in your own little library. You’d slipped your fingers through its pages, reliving the love you have for the story the author so kindly shared. As you did, a loose page caught your attention and immediately, you heart froze.
Please don’t be ripped, you thought with bated breath.
The loose paper slipped easily from between the pages and you stared curiously at what Embry could have forgotten in your book. Just a bookmark, you guessed, as your fingers lingered over the creased folds in the paper, but your heart thumped unevenly against your ribs at your name scrawled across the top in messy handwriting.
(Y/N),
Thank you for sharing a piece of you with me; the way your eyes lit up when you mentioned this book had me desperate to read it just so I could understand a little more about you. You speak of your favorite character as if she were an angel, a creature to be worshipped, but I think the real goddess in this story, in any story, is you.
If you don’t feel the same, I understand, but I haven’t been able to stop thinking about you since we met last year. I’ve had to fight the urge to kiss you since you told me your favorite movie and how you love when it rains. I’m sorry if this is weird, I didn’t know how else to tell you, but seeing you makes my soul feel alive.
Embry
The words, so simple and soft, sent a tingle through your chest and slowly, a giddy smile pulled up the corners of your lips. Sighing gently, your eyes roamed over your library until you found the sequel of the book he’d borrowed. Then you hurried to sit behind your little desk, grab a pen, and scrawl out your reply.
Embry,
You are one of the kindest souls I have had the pleasure to know. I can’t believe I am lucky enough to get to see your brilliant smile and the way your eyes crinkle when you laugh at my jokes. It seems there has been some confusion between us though, and for that, I am sorry; I never wanted you to fight that urge.
Yours,
(Y/N)
Before you could talk yourself out of it, you slipped the paper in between the pages of the sequel, put the book into your bag, and hurried out the door.
The line was moving rather slow at the coffee shop this morning. Despite this, you cheerily listened to your friends beside you as they spoke of your girls’ day.
“It’s been so long since we got to have a day,” Lo mused.
“Yeah, I’ve really missed you,” you said as Ida patted your shoulder comfortingly.
“Life is busy sometimes, it’s just nice to spend some time together when we can,” she offered.
“But let’s try not to let life get too busy to put this much time between us again, okay?” Lo looked at you as she spoke, her tone lacking all of the accusation you knew you deserved.
“Agreed,” you nodded.
The line moved forward and you waited for the man in front of you to order. As Ida talked about the shops she wanted to visit, you watched the man pat his jean pockets quickly and throw his hands up through his curly dark hair in defeat.
“I can’t believe this, I forgot my wallet! I’m sorry!”
Having been in that position before, you reached in and grabbed your wallet from your bag.
“That’s okay,” you called to the barista from over his shoulder, “I’ve got his order.”
He turned to you and you were instantly struck by how beautiful a man could really be. He looked at you with doe brown eyes and a mouth turned up into a smile so pure, it made your chest ache. His shirt stretched over his well-muscled arms as he extended them out toward you.
“Miss, you don’t have to,” he started but you cut him off with a stutter, your eyes roaming over him quickly. Did your tongue suddenly turn to sawdust?
“It’s fine. I’ve been there before.”
“Are you sure?”
You nodded, “it’s really no problem.”
“Well thank you, it’s very sweet.”
You nodded again, unable to pull your sight away from his smile. Lo nudged you in the side, kickstarting your brain, and the man stepped to the side so you could order, pulling his phone from the back pocket of his jeans. Before they could fight you over it, you paid for both their coffees, this beautiful stranger’s, and your own.
“Can I get a name for the order?” The barista asked.
“(Y/N).”
“That is a beautiful name,” the man said and you saw Lo crossed her arms beside you.
“Beautiful name for a beautiful girl,” she smirked at him.
He nodded, his smile widening impossibly so. “I agree.”
You felt the heat rush through your cheeks at his words.
“Don’t forget sweet,” Ida offered and your wide eyes flitted over to your friend who grinned at your bewilderment.
“(Y/N)!” The barista called and you rushed over to get the tray of drinks, hoping to escape the surge of dizziness the compliments were giving you.
You turned back to your friends to see a smirk and an encouraging smile gracing Lo and Ida’s beautiful faces. Slowly, you handed them each their drink from the tray, before taking one you didn’t order out to hand to the man.
“Frappuccino with whipped cream for—”
“Kili,” he offered openly, his eyes glittering as his fingers brushed against your hand, “and yes, that’s mine. Thank you again.”
“Really, it’s no problem, Kili.”
His eyes glanced quickly toward the door before focusing back on you. “I’m just waiting for someone, would you mind if I waited with you?”
“Of course not!” Lo smiled at him before cocking her eyebrow at you. Then she slipped her arm through Ida’s and led her to a table, leaving you and Kili alone at the pickup station. Your eyes darted between the table they were placing their things on and Kili, though your feet stayed rooted to their spot on their floor. Could you really be this lucky?
Kili frowned, the downturn of his full lips settling a cloud in front of the sunshine of his scruffy cheeks.
“I can wait at my own table, if it’d make you more comfortable.”
You shook your head quickly, trying to swallow the knot in your throat. “No I don’t mind,” you finally squeaked and you wanted to roll your eyes at how embarrassing you were. Kili was undeterred by your choking, the sunny smile quickly slipping back across his face.
“Great! After you,” he tilted his head and you turned toward the table, immediately locking eyes with the feline green ones of Lo. Within two steps, you tripped and her eyebrows shot up as she elbowed Ida gently.
“Are you alright, (Y/N)?” Ida asked as you slid into the seat next to her.
“Fine,” you chirped to her as Kili sat down beside you. She fought against the smile tugging at her lips at how flustered you were.
The table went quiet for a moment as the girls watched you glance at Kili from the corner of your eye while you sipped your drink. You couldn’t help but stare as his muscles bulged against his shirt as he leaned back comfortably in the metal chair. While you quietly admired, your friend decided to help you as best she could.
“So, Kili, do you live around here?”
He smiled as he sipped his drink. “Yes we live just over on the other side of the highway.”
Ida asked “In the Erebor development?” At the same moment Lo sweetly asked, “we?”
He nodded and answered both of them, quickly giving you the impression of an open book with his easy lounge and honest answers. “Just south of Dale. I live with my brother, Fili, which is who I’m waiting for.”
“Have you lived there long?”
“My whole life.”
His glittering brown eyes roamed over your face but a voice behind you cut off whatever he was going to say.
“I’m sorry ladies, is he giving you trouble?”
You turned to find another stunningly gorgeous man behind you, this one smaller in stature than Kili but golden and lithe with a smile that exuded confidence. Lo’s eyes quickly roamed over him, her smile widening into a feline grin.
“No,” you offered with a glance at Kili, who rolled his eyes.
“Not a bit,” Lo agreed with bright eyes.
“Really? Because I heard my baby brother went and left his wallet in my truck and bothered you for a coffee.”
“(Y/N) offered, he was no bother,” Ida said to him.
“Bother or not, I’d like to repay his debt.” He pulled a wallet from his jacket pocket but you shook your head.
“There’s no debt to repay.”
“Please,” Kili cut in. “I didn’t want to impose.”
“I told you, it was no big deal.”
“Don’t worry about it Kili, you can get her next one,” Lo suggested, though her eyes barely strayed from Kili’s brother as he handed Kili the wallet from his pocket. Your stomach flipped as Kili grinned at her words. Was she trying to kill you?
“That would be great! Would lunch today work?”
“Oh! Um…” you glanced over at your friends; Ida nodded quickly while Lo winked. “I thought I had plans but l think lunch works.”
His brother lightly tapped Kili on the back of his head. “If you ladies have plans, I’m sure there is a better arrangement that doesn’t interrupt. Maybe dinner?” He glanced at Lo again and smirked. “I’m Fili, by the way.”
Kili waited for your answer. The hope in his eyes had you nodding your head in agreement to Fili’s plan while he shook Lo and Ida’s hands. Then his face split into the brightest grin you’d seen yet at your acceptance of dinner tonight.
“Do you like The Lonely Mountain? It’s the pub across the street.”
You nodded again, your stomach still dancing at Kili’s gorgeous smile. “It’s my favorite.”
His eyes crinkled in the corners as the smile pushed up his scruffy cheeks. “Perfect.”
You stared at him, just appreciating his looks for a moment, before your brain started working again.
“Oh,” you remembered, biting your lip. “I can drop you girls off and come back.”
“Nonsense,” Fili drawled. “We can all go to dinner so you don’t have to go back and forth.”
“That’s perfect,” Lo mused. “Say seven?”
“We’ll meet you there at seven,” he agrees, his eyes never straying from her gorgeous face.
“Perfect!” Kili said excitedly. “It’s a date!”
Your heart jumped to your throat at his words and his enthusiasm at seeing you again.
“Well ladies, we have to go,” Fili said as Kili stood from his chair. “But we’ll see you tonight.”
Lo smiled radiantly at him. “Yes, you will.”
Kili gave you one last breathtaking smile as he followed his brother out the front door.
Lo let out a long breath as Ida smiled at you. Your brain was still wheeling at the sudden shift of your day.
“Wow, gorgeous, good job.”
“They are very attractive,” Ida added. “It seems like you’ll have a good time tonight.”
You frowned at your steadfast friend. “You say that as though you’re not coming.”
She shook her head, her dark hair brushing against her shoulder. “It’s clearly a double. I’ll just Uber home beforehand.”
You and Lo scoffed at the same time. “You will not. If you refuse to come, then I will drive you home before dinner. But I’d rather you come,” you said.
Ida smiled as she rubbed her hands over the cover of her book on the table. “We can do dinner another night. I don’t want to fifth wheel.”
Despite the guilt settling in your stomach, you couldn’t help the excitement dancing in your chest at the idea of seeing Kili’s stunning smile again.
“You can sit with me and Fili,” Lo offered. “I’m just going as chaperone.”
With furrowed eyebrows, you stared at your friend. “And what’s that supposed to mean?”
Lo laughed out loud, her eyes bright as she teased you, your face heating impossibly at her words. “You heard him, (Y/N), it’s a date!”
It took a lot to make Embry angry. He was sweet and considerate and overall, easygoing. It was one of the things you really loved about him. In the year you’d been dating him, you’d never even seen him lose his temper.
Until that morning he showed up at your house and he noticed the bruises on your wrists. His eyes darkened and his voice dropped to an octave you’d never heard from him before.
“Babe, what happened?”
With tears in your eyes, you recounted how your ex showed up the night before, begging you to get back together, and how angry he got when you refused. Embry wrapped you in his warm arms, careful to avoid putting pressure on your wrists. Then he kissed your temple and nudged you toward his car.
“Show me where he lives.”
It was a quiet drive and despite how gently he held your hand, you could feel the anger rolling off him in waves. When he stopped in front of your ex’s house, he pulled your hand up to kiss the purpled skin of your wrist.
“Stay here.”
Then he got out of the car and stalked his way to the front door. With a shaking hand, he knocked and waited for your ex to answer. As soon as the door opened, Embry grabbed the man and threw him onto the damp grass of the front lawn. With his entire form quivering, he leaned down over the man.
“I don’t appreciate you putting your hands on her. Don’t ever come near her again. I mean it, if you ever even look at her in the wrong way, I’ll end you.”
Then he stood up and walked back over to the car where you sat watching him with wide eyes. He drove down to his house with both hands shaking on the steering wheel and avoiding your eye. When he got out of the car, you followed suit, but he held up his hands to stop you as his whole body shook.
“Embry, are you okay?”
“I need you to stay back.”
You sputtered. “What, why?”
“I don’t want to hurt you. Please.”
Frozen in your spot, you nodded. “Tell me what I can do to help.”
He swallowed and met you with a sudden pleading in his tone. “I need you to believe what I’m about to tell you.”
Wally’s hands were clenched around the edges of the table as his green eyes watched her form from across the banquet hall.
“KF, you need to get traught,” Dick whispered from beside him. “They’re all like that with all of us. She knows how to handle herself.”
“I know she does,” Wally ground out from between his teeth. And it was true, he knew that she was strong and outspoken, but he still couldn’t help but be aggravated at the way some creep kept inching into her personal space. Despite her polite smile, her body language screamed discomfort, which automatically put the speedster on edge.
“I’m serious, man, you’re gonna break the table.”
Wally glanced over at his friend. “It’s the table or his face.”
Dick couldn’t help but laugh. “I guess the table is the better of the two. But seriously, she’s okay. She’s been coming to galas since she was thirteen, she knows how to escape.”
He groaned but tried to settle back in his chair, knowing her brother was right. Still, he couldn’t help the way his chest clenched as the trust fund brat all but pulled her onto the dance floor and slid his hand around her waist.
It wasn’t until his hand slipped lower than was appropriate that Wally snapped. He stood up, knocking his chair over and made his way over to her at a pace that was much too slow for his liking but wouldn’t give away his identity.
He had his hands curled around the creep’s lapels and his face so close to the man that he could see his own angry face reflected in the other’s eyes.
“Wally,” she soothed, “it’s okay.”
He ignored her, his eyes still on the man as he growled in a low voice, “If you come near her ever again, I’ll end you. Understood?”
With wide eyes, the man nodded. Wally stared at him for a second before he released his grasp and glanced at her.
“Now,” he directed the man, “apologize.”
“S-Sorry!”
“You don’t ever touch a woman without her consent.”
The man nodded again and disappeared into the crowd. Wally released a breath and turned to her, guilt already dancing across his face.
“I’m sorry, babe, I di—”
He was cut off but her pulling him into a searing kiss. When she pulled back, Wally grinned, a pink blush tinting his freckled cheeks.
“My hero,” she whispered.
“I really didn’t mean to act like a gorilla, I know you can handle yourself.”
Laughing, she started to tug him toward the exit, not bothering to say goodbye to anyone as she hurried him out to the car.
“Babe, I’ll be good; we don’t have to leave.”
She pushed him against the side of her car and kissed him again until he felt dizzy. When he pulled away, she leaned in to whisper in his ear.
