Y/N Rider daughter of rapunzel and Flynn Rider starts to realise Max Hatter isnโt the person everyone makes him out to be.
At first you believed all the rumours and talk about Max Hatter son of Maddox Hatter.
โYou couldnโt trust Max Hatter as far as you could throw him.โ
โHeโs just like his father heโs mad.โ
โHeโs always playing games.โ
Every student at Auradon Prep talked about Max like this and maybe thatโs why you believed the โrumoursโ. After all, you were Rapunzel and Flynn Riderโs daughter so of course you knew all about stories, reputations, and people judging someone without even bothering to find out the truth.
So everytime he made a sarcastic comment, a smug grin or a teasing remark, it just cemented what everyone had told you. Or so you thought, on your way to meet Chloe and Red you accidentally overheard a conversation, Max didnโt know you were there.
He was sitting alone outside the school gardens, absentmindedly spinning his hat in his hands, one of the other students walks past, โGuess being the Maddox Hatterโs son means youโll end up just as crazy.โ they laughed, Max sat there putting a on a fake smile and said, โGuess so.โ. As they walked away his smile dropped as he let out a sigh. You didnโt know why but part of you felt a bit sad seeing him sat there on his own
A few days after the incident you were in class, everyone was being paired up for an assignment and of course you were paired up with Max. He started to walk towards you โgreatโ you say dripping in sarcasm, โyou literally could have picked anyone else in the classโ you added. He sat down next to you and rolled his eyes as he said โtrust me, sunshine, Iโm just as thrilled.โ
As the week goes on and you work on the assignment you start to notice things about him like how patient he stays when you get frustrated, he does parts of the assignment without asking for credit, he makes sure youโre not struggling, youโre in the library one day working on the assignment you are stressed to the max (no pun intended) you notice him looking at you from the corner of your eye, โyou ok?โ He asks, you keep your head down โyeah Iโm fine Iโm just mentally clocked out of this assignment I canโt wait for it to be overโ you reply. โDonโt worry weโll get through this and you wonโt have to be around me anymoreโ he says. You felt bad when he said this but also confused because his voice sounded softer than youโve ever heard it.
This doesnโt match the person everyone describes. Later that evening youโre walking back to the dorms together. Thereโs an awkward but nice silence, you couldnโt hold it in any longer and ask , โWhy do you let people think youโre awful?โ Max strugs at your question like itโs nothing and says โBecause itโs easier.โ, โEasier than what?โ you ask. He looks away from you and replies โTrying to convince everyone Iโm not my dad.โ This makes your heart sink, thereโs silence for a few moments before he talks again, โThe second people hear my last nameโฆโ he says with a slight pain in his voice but he laughs quietly after the words leave his mouth โtheyโve already decided who I am, so I stopped trying.โ he adds.
This stops you in your tracks immediately and he notices straight away, โwhat?โ he asks. โMax Iโm really sorry I was wrong about youโ you say as you shake your head. He has a surprised look on his face when you said this, โYouโre not pretending to be someone else youโre pretending not to care.โ you say sadly. He stared at you like he was trying stare right through you as if nobody had ever said that to him before.
โYou really think that?โ He questions, โI know that.โ you reply. There was silence again but it was a silence that said what needed to be said. After that conversation you started to see the real Max, you saw he was so much more than his sarcasm, he was kind and caring, he would always hang back to help clean up, he would use jokes to hide when heโs hurting. The more you seen him, the more he reminded you of the kind of person your mother always believed people could be, he was someone worth looking past the rumors for.
One day you and max were walking to class and someone muttered as you walked past โFigures. The Mad Hatterโs kid.โ Before Max could even pretend it didnt bother him you spoke up โMaybe stop judging people by their parents.โ They all went quiet, you moved closer to Max and spoke again, โIf you actually got to know him, youโd realize heโs one of the kindest people here.โ You smiled. Max looked at you in complete shock , no one had ever defended him like that atleast not publicly. They all walked away and he looks at you and quietly says โThanks.โ. You gave him a nudge with you elbow and said โDonโt make me regret it.โ as you said this a small smile appeared on his face. Not a fake one real one this time. โWouldnโt dream of it, sunshine.โ He says with a smirk. And thatโs the moment you realised, you didnโt just stop seeing the Mad Hatterโs son you started seeing Max.
