Turning onto the street, you strolled towards the house at the end. Once there you headed up the driveway and knocked on the door to be greeted and ushered in by Maggie.
"You look lovely" you smiled at her. She and Jim we're all dressed up for date night.
"Cassie's just through in the living room, feel free to eat or drink whatever you can find and remember to have her in bed by 9." Maggie already had her shoes on and purse in hand ready to go. She'd been so good to you and practically treated you like family after you started babysitting Cassie regularly around 6 months ago.
"Not a problem, enjoy your date."
Maggie grinned at you and walked out of the doorway. Jim was right behind her.
"Thanks (Y/N), you and Cassie have fun."
You heard a squeal from the living room and shook your head, a small smile tugging at your lips.
"Hey Cassie bean, how's it going?" She giggled at your nickname for her.
"Hi (Y/N), I'm watching Beauty and the Beast and then we're having a dance party."
"Oh really?" You raised an eyebrow at her. "Well I'm not very good at dancing, you'll have to teach me."
"I'm great at it, my daddy taught me." Cassie's eyes are glued to the screen, engrossed in the movie. You got up to go to the kitchen where you made two cups of juice and one large bowl of popcorn. Coming back through into the living room you saw the credits for the movie rolling on the screen.
"Remember, late night snacks are are secret" you put your finger to your lips and winked. Cassie grinned and grabbed a mouthful of popcorn. Picking up the remote you switched the music channel on, music immediately blasting through the speakers. You turned it down slightly and looked at the music video, you recognised the song as one of Years & Years' new singles If you're over me. You'd be careful the songs that came on we're kid friendly but this one was okay. Cassie was already jumping around.
"Not on the furniture!" You pretended to be horrified, causing Cassie to promptly burst into a fit of laughter. Before you could shoo her off the couch you heard the doorbell go and went to answer it, leaving Cassie scattering cushions everywhere.
"Hello?" You opened the door to be met by a slightly-scruffy-but-in-a-good-way looking man who you vaguely recognised as Cassie's father.
"Hi" he looked equally as confused to see you. You glanced back over your shoulder to see Cassie hadn't noticed who was at the door yet. You shifted slightly to obscure her vision of the door but it didn't do much. Scott (you're pretty sure that's his name?) Was a few inches taller than you, not that much but enough to be visible if Cassie gets curious.
"Am I interrupting something?" His voice snaps you out of your thought. He seems patient and polite enough but shuffles his feet a bit out of nerves or confusion, you weren't sure.
"Just a dance party" you smile slightly.
"Um, is Maggie in?" He looks at you even more puzzled.
"Ah yes, no, sorry I'm (Y/N)" you offer your hand "Cassie's babysitter. Maggie and Jim are out for the evening."
He smiles and shakes your hand. "Scott, Cassie's dad."
"I know" you stand there for a minute more, unsure what to do. Maggie never mentioned him stopping by. You make up your mind quickly before things got too awkward.
"Why don't you come in?" You stand aside and he steps inside, kicking his shoes off.
"I'm not staying long I was just in the neighborhood and thought I'd drop by." He quickly explains, rubbing the back of his neck he looks as uncomfortable as you feel. You looked at the carpet, your slippers, past him into the room. Anywhere but his eyes which were boring into you. You'd never been more thankful for Cassie than when she comes running over.
"Daddy!" She wraps her arms around his legs.
"Hey peanut" he rests his hand on her head and she smiles up at him.
"(Y/N) here mentioned something about a dance party, where can I get an invitation?" His smile when he looked at her lit up his whole face and you soon found yourself relaxing. Cassie just took his hand and dragged him into the room singing and skipping. To your amusement he started singing and skipping with her, the both of them terribly out of tune but looked to be having so much fun you couldn't resist getting your phone and filming a short video to show Maggie later. Scott looked over caught you laughing at the two of them and holding your side. He gave you a million dollar smile and reached out a hand.
"Are you joining us or?" He wiggled his eyebrows and Cassie copied him, or tried too.
"I would but it's someone's bedtime." You gave Cassie a pointed look.
"Noooo five more minutes!" Cassie pouted.
"I promised your mom you'd be in bed by 9 and I don't want to get into trouble" you pretended to whisper the last part.
"Fine." Sighing she follows you up the stairs. After making sure she cleaned her teeth and put her pjamas on you tucked her into bed and turned off the bedside lamp.
"Goodnight Cassie bean."
"Night (Y/N)."
When you returned back downstairs Scott had put the living room almost back in order and was pinching popcorn out of the bowl.
"You can eat the rest if you want" you waved a hand vaguely in his direction.
He mumbled thanks through a mouthful of popcorn and followed you into the kitchen where you'd cleared away the cups.
"Fancy a coffee?" You offered. After how sweet he was with Cassie you didn't want to just throw him out.
"I'll have tea if you don't mind." He puts the now empty bowl in the sink.
"Of course not." You flick the kettle on.
When Maggie and Jim return you've spent a good hour in Scott's company, mostly laughing at his jokes and stories. You'd told him about how you were at University studying to become a nurse and you'd started babysitting for a bit of extra money but you'd fallen in love with Cassie and she was more like a little sister to you now. At one point Scott asked for your number "incase I ever need the worlds best babysitter according to Cassie." It struck you as odd that on the rare occasions when Cassie went to stay with him he would want to go out and need a sitter but you gave him your number anyway. Maybe it was something about the almost shy grin he gave you when he asked.
Maggie walked in first, calling out hello quietly. When she saw who was sitting opposite you she stopped in her tracks, causing Jim to walk into her back.
"Scott." She looked at him slightly confused.
You got up and cleared your throat.
"Scott stopped by to see Cassie after you left, I hope you didn't mind I let him in." You we're still trying to gauge if the look on Maggie's face was shock or anger. Or both.
"No no (Y/N) it's fine. Just unexpected. Cassie must have been in bed at least an hour though why are you still here Scott?" She turned her attention to him.
"Thought I'd wait till you got back to explain why I was here" he got up to leave "but now you're back I'll be on my way."
Jim turned to you "how were you planning on getting home (Y/N)? It's dark out and too late to be walking the streets on your own."
"I'll give her a lift." Scott piped up, all eyes now on him. "I mean, wherever you live going a bit out of my way is worth preventing you from being mugged." He jabbered nervously, reaching to rub the back of his neck again.
"Well that's, nice. But (Y/N) we can call you a taxi." Maggie offers.
"No, don't fuss. If Scott really doesn't mind then I'll just get a lift with him." You looked towards Scott.
"Come on then." You left with him after saying goodbye to Maggie and Jim. Slipping out of the doorway you follow Scott into the cool evening and you shiver, glad you don't have to walk home. Scott unlocks the car and opens your door for you to slide into the passenger seat with a quiet "thank you."
Scott appears in the driver's seat and starts the car. It purrs to life and hot air shoots out of the blowers. You buckle your seatbelt and breathe a sigh of relief at the suddem warmth.
"Sorry if this isn't the smoothest car ride, I'm not used to driving something this fancy." You guessed the car must be from his work, not that you knew what that was. The car was nice, a sleek black Mercedes with all the latest tech, not something you imagined him picking out. Scott switched the radio on so you had music to listen to and pulled out into the road.
"Off we go."
