Tutor (Neville Longbottom x Reader)
Summary: (Y/N) is struggling with herbology and Hermione has the perfect tutor in mind.
Pairing: Neville Longbottom x FemReader
Warnings: None? A totally made up exam for herbology for plot.
A/N: Another prompt from a prompt generator that I thought would be cute and since I havenât written for Neville before (*gasp* the horror! I know) I thought it would be a good fit. -S

It was quite frustrating for (Y/N)... she fancied herself to be quite good with most of her classes. She would never claim to be as brilliant as Hermione, but she thought she had good marks. Decent enough to get a good start on life! Well... except one class sheâd been struggling with since year one and now during her sixth year the class had only gotten harder. âHonestly... I hate herbology! Why is it always this hard for me?â
Hermione watched her exasperated classmate vent about the practical exam they would be coming up and how she had no bloody idea how she would pull it off. Hermione found the subject easy enough, but knew there were just some areas others excelled and struggled with, she hadnât ever been sure she would get through their flying classes. âHave you considered getting some tutoring for the subject?â
âOh would you?!â (Y/N)âs eyes sparkled with a new sort of hope! How had the idea never crossed her mind?!
Hermione had the marks to do so, sure... but when she caught a glimpse of another fellow housemate sneaking a few looks at (Y/N), well she just couldnât help herself. It was hardly meddling in someoneâs life, and everything she was going to say wouldnât be a lie, per say. âYou know, herbology isnât my best class either... What about Neville? Heâs quite gifted at it I hear?â
(Y/N)âs eyes flickered towards him. She hadnât a single quarrel with him... though he might feel the opposite. Honesty, (Y/N) just didnât think he fancied her that much given the small amount of time heâd ever seemed comfortable enough to spend with her. âYou think he would?â
âOh, Iâm sure! You know heâs just a bit shy, if you asked him I know heâd do it.â Hermione smiled, hoping she was truly helping and not going to ruin things. Sheâd heard Seamus lightly teasing him about the crush not too long ago, and well it just seemed to the perfect opportunity.
(Y/N) nodded and walked over to the other side of the common room where Neville was perched with a few other Gryffindorâs. She had to admit she felt a bit nervous when she spoke and the eyes of the whole group were on her, âHey, Neville! I just had a quick question for you.â
âSure.â He managed to squeak out without hopefully sounding too pathetic.
âWe have that herbology test coming up next week and well itâs no secret Iâm bloody awful. Hermione thought I should ask you to help me study?â (Y/N) made sure to throw out Hermioneâs name, she was closer to him and hopefully if nothing else heâs do it as a favor to her.
Neville muttered out some more sureâs and nods of agreement until the girl happily skipped off. He wondered if he should be feeling some sort of sentiments of thankfulness or anger towards Hermione who had landed him in a predicament where he would have to be alone with the one person heâd harbored quite a crush on since their 3rd year. Because now he would have to do that... he was scheduled to meet her in the greenhouse after dinner tomorrow and help her and he could probably count on two hands the times heâd talked to her in all of their years at Hogwarts.
He still hadnât decided if he was feeling dread or excitement the next day, as he was walking into the greenhouse. Maybe a little of both, he determined when (Y/N) smiled up at him from a seat sheâd taken at one of the garden tables. âHey Neville! I hope you know what youâre getting yourself into... I might be a lost cause.â
He chuckled at her joke and attempt to lighten the mood. âProfessor Sprout expects us to be able to propagate a Moly plant, so I guess the best place to start would be there?â
(Y/N) just smiled and nodded... she really hoped that he didnât ask her to go fetch said plant. She really shouldâve looked at the book a little more so she didnât make a complete arse of herself. She hadnât the foggiest idea what a Moly was... she thought propagation might be growing something from something else? Wait! They had to collect this for Snape last year as a homework assignment.... âMoly... has the blue flowers?â
âWhite flowers.â Neville corrected as gently as he could, bringing a pot containing the distinct looking plant. With a black stem and a quite pretty white bloom, Neville did wonder how she could forget it. She nodded defeated, âDo you remember what itâs for?â
âCan you just assume I know nothing? It might make this a bit less embarrassing.â (Y/N) chuckled, face slightly flushed by the mixup.
Neville didnât want her to be embarrassed, but of course he definitely knew the feeling. So while he wasnât happy to see her in such a state, he did find it made her a bit more approachable. By the end of their first study session, Neville found himself capable of answering her questions without stumbling over his words.
Then by the second day, something utterly amazing happened. (Y/N) was trying to get a clipping off of the Moly plant, âRight here?â
She held her shears incredible close to the leaf, and waited for Nevilleâs instruction.
âA little closer to the stem...â Her hands went all the way to the stem, âThatâs a little too close. Here, let me help...â
Cautiously, he grabbed hold of her hand and quite gently moved her shears to the appropriate spot. He tried not to focus on how her skin felt against his and played off the smile on his face as mirrored enjoyment of her success at procuring a successful clipping.
Their study sessions had shortened a bit after planting, but still she would ask him a few questions and get Neville to show her a few other things. And on the fifth day, there was a sprout in the terra-cotta pot sheâd buried the clipping. âOh my goodness! We did it! Itâs actually growing!â
âI think that would be a successful propagation... you should do well on exam.â Neville mirrored the smile she wore, though it was a great deal smaller. Truthfully, he was a bit bummed out by the fact she no longer would require his attention in the afternoons.
âOh! Iâm just so happy! I could kiss you!â Her fussing over the small budding plant wouldâve probably been considered quite overdone to most anyone, but Neville was much more focused on her words.
Kiss him? Without thinking about it Neville simply spoke, âYouâre very welcome to do so...â
(Y/N) looked over at his reddened face and grinned. Herbology may have been her vice, but she wasnât completely daft, and she had quickly started to piece together Hermioneâs choice in tutoring was a little more than Nevilleâs aptitude for the subject. She didnât mind though, Neville was quite sweet now thatâd she spent a little time with him and he was cute. (Y/N) turned around and stood on her toes to grab hold of his face. She pulled his lips flush against hers.
Neville didnât speak when she pulled away and loosened her grip on him. He was far too busy being utterly shocked at what had transpired.
âI hope youâll let me buy you a Butterbeer or something? You know as a thanks?â (Y/N) giggled when he nodded his head, âOnce this exam is over then maybe I can take you out properly.â
