there's this curious phenomenon on tumblr where people love to point out all the progressive elements of or influences on a given work of art but then get angry when you point out that it also had some bigoted aspects. i have read this book twice already and i Know it won't stick because he chases after her and ultimately manages to trick her back but god i still feel this absolutely overwhelming high when one of lovelace’s letters opens with “zounds, man, the lady is gone off!” yesss clary run as fast as the wind will carry you

btw i wrote this. put off posting it because posting my clarissa notes isn't really my number one priority in life. continued reading and realised how quickly he managed to track her down and how quickly he gets everyone else in the house on his side i hate it here.

this is almost more depressing than when she was at mrs sinclair’s i think, because at least there it's like…ok these are by richardson’s moral code Bad People, he's never seriously going to portray them as being on clarissa's side because to him doing sex work=no moral character whatsoever. i expect that. the fact that there are so called respectable people who are completely dismissive of clarissa’s fear and disgust and think she should get over her over-niceness and just fuck him as soon as they're convinced that he's her husband? further proof that the respectability clarissa values so highly is not really on her side, at least not consistently, not the moment rape is sold to them in their own language of a husband’s rights. it's not a question of escaping the Bad Place into the Good Place because there is no Good Place for her.

i am admittedly being a little unfair here; she elaborates that it's because she thinks an ‘infidel’ with his character would have “no room at all for hope” of reformation, and obviously we know more than she does the extent of his cruelty at this point (the audience has heard that captain tomlinson and his offer of reconciliation with the family are false and she isn't aware of that, for one), and i think there's an extent to which she's trying to scrounge up any hope she can find even if that's in a way that i don't agree with as a secular 21st century reader

still there is something quite grimly funny to me about looking at this guy who loves revenge and being thought better than anyone else and who we know has gone on and on about wanting to humble her and drag her away from her own morals in his letters and going yeah he's not a great guy BUT ☝️ at least he's a christian

as with last series i do find myself having mixed feelings about episode 3...frustrated me less than the conclusion of that episode with the master but perhaps had fewer standout moments along the way...

ohhhh ho ho ho i do very much like the discovery that the daleks didn’t breech the time freeze. it was the time lords! they wanted the excuse to destroy the planet!! romana needs to start biting people!!!

i do think this explains why they wanted to do a follow-up to the last story so quickly but also up until this point it did feel like it was retreading ground tbh!

eris does actually confirm that he’s from five years in the future. ok so we HAVE done a five year time jump in the middle of the series? why??

i like the detail that the time lords torched the daleks’ original oil fields. this is their fault! like not fully because the daleks don’t exactly need prompting to do atrocious things but it’s the combination of both sides in this war that have brought consequences crashing down on an innocent planet!

romana saying time lords shouldn’t have the right or power to wipe out entire civilisations...there’s something endlessly fascinating to me about how romana and narvin are both devoted to this vision of gallifrey that maybe never really existed. gallifrey has always seen itself as superior!
