My 2012 April O'Neil Headcanons

huge interest in journalism since she was young, dreams of becoming a reporter

horrible at math, ok at science, excels in social studies and english

sort of canon but she is strongly persuasive

also semi-canon but she journals every single day. she started journaling when she was 9 after a therapist (who she was seeing for her abandonment issues due to her mom) recommended it. she legit will not go to sleep if she hasn't journaled that day

since her dad is a psychologist, she sometimes talks to him about the turtle's specific personality traits and traumas when she is worried about them and doesn't know how to help

she loves hanging out with mikey for fun and for stress relief

she goes to leo for training or just someone to talk to

she loves hanging out with donnie and talking about global and political issues with him, they have similar views on a lot of topics and she appreciates his informative views

raph is pretty stand offish with her until the farmhouse arc (i wrote about this in my ao3 fic)

pushes herself to keep up with the turtles and also to make splinter proud

casey is actually the person she goes to for advice the most, since he's the only human she knows who gets what shes going through

her relationship with shinigami and karai started off strained, but turns to close friendship. she loves patrolling with the two

Future:

she eventually goes to college, although she takes a gap year. she double majors in political science and journalism for her bachelors, and gets her masters in journalism

she becomes an avid spokesperson for mutant rights

becomes a senator for new york, making her the first ever mutant senator

can we PLEASEEE talk about raph's tremendous attachment issues in 2012

raph storming out on the team 27 times is NOT NORMAL!!! he has insane insecurity and avoidant attachment issues PLS FANDOM TALK ABOUT THIS

i personally like to think they stem from feeling like leo was splinter's favorite growing up + a feeling of shame that he cannot hold positive relationships due to feeling defined by his negative qualities

i interpret his moments of walking out on the team as him looking for validation that if he leaves, ppl will follow him. sort of like a "if i leave them they can't leave me" type of think

i think he definitely has an avoidant insecure attachment style but sometimes portrays an anxious attachment style with people when he first becomes attached to them (like becoming friends with casey almost instantly or falling in love with mona lisa from one punch). raph doesn't think things through at all and sometimes when he meets new people he thinks of them as sort of a miracle cure that will make him feel better

i interpret the reason why raph so often calls himself "handsome" and hypes himself up so much is because he actually thinks very low of himself. the constant feeling of being misunderstood by everyone around him and feeling like his anger issues define him causes him to have a poor self image, but this is raph we're talking about so of course he's going to try to hide his issues

anyways i think we should talk about this more when analyzing raph's character ^w^

My personal thoughts and headcanons for pre-canon Splinter/Hamato Yoshi

things we know about pre-fatherhood splinter:

canonically meant to be the heir of the hamato clan (ciro nieli stated in an interview

canonically stated he wanted to be an artist when he was younger (lone rat and cubs)

canon rivalry w saki during entire childhood (mentioned a billion times)

my take on this:

young pre adulthood splinter never wanted to be the heir of the hamato clan, but doesnt want to disappoint his father

interested in art and secretly wishes he could be an artist rather than a ninja

saki notices his lack of focus on ninjitsu and uses this weakness to try and best yoshi and prove to their father that he is better than yoshi

saki (who at this time doesn't know he's adopted) thinks splinter is only the heir due to being 2 years older than him. wants to prove to their father that he is better than yoshi and does everything he can to beat yoshi in all areas of life

as yoshi gets older, he abandons his dreams of being an artist in order to completely dedicate his life to ninjitsu and make his father proud

he regrets it but tries not to acknowledge this pain. becomes a bit unemotional during this era despite his emotional core

only shen knows about his love for art, wishes he would just be himself rather than who his father wants him to be. i think this makes the argument shen and yoshi have in "tale of the yokai" more deep and meaningful, shen wasn't just thinking of herself and miwa but also wanted to go to new york because she knew it would help yoshi too

yoshi ends up moving to new york because now that his father is dead, he has nothing left to prove and decides to persue art afterall

obviously that doesnt work out lmao cuz bros mutated to a fucking rat

this causes yoshi to be confused about which path was correct, ninjitsu or art

ends up feeling guilty over his father's death and moving to new york, which is why he decides to start practicing ninjitsu again and teaches it to the turtles as well
