One of my favorite things about Asheiji is it has all the makings of a potentially terrible and toxic relationship, yet it is...not.
When I first heard about Banana Fish, I was hesitant to watch it because I thought it was going to feature a toxic pairing that people fawned over because of the aesthetic of it. I was pleasantly surprised to see that it was nowhere near that.
The reason people fawn over Asheiji is not because they think it's perfect and without fault, but because of how healthy it is, given the circumstances.
Ash could have easily adopted the manipulative ways of his abusers or the cold and distant ways of his father, but he did not. Instead, he has shown that he has the capacity to love, whether it's his camaraderie with Shorter, his protectiveness over Skip, or his fierce love of Eiji (and yes, it's fiction, but there are many people in real life who have experienced evil, yet chose kindness instead of continuing the cycle of abuse).
Because it took place not even 24 hours after he stormed through and burned down a mansion just to find Eiji. Doesn't even know him that well but was willing to risk life and death for him.
So we have two teenaged boys, one of whom is severely depressed yet hides it from everyone, and another who has been abused, exploited, and mistreated by countless people, yet they have a relatively healthy relationship (again, given the circumstances) where they care about each other and have normal arguments and disagreements where they can apologize to each other; of course people will love their relationship. For some reason, there are people who interpret this as fans choosing to overlook their flaws.
We know Ash isn't perfect. We know he's not good at communication; most people aren't, especially teenagers, and especially a boy who was literally told that "boys don't cry", and most likely learned how to keep his tears and innermost feelings bottled up. Our opinions on their relationship are based on all these factors.
Ash Lynx and Eiji Okumura are a wonderful and flawed pair. In a different time and place, their relationship would've been sugary, fluffy perfection; unfortunately, they were not allowed to have that. Supporters of their relationship have simply chosen to acknowledge the violence and tragedy of their world, while praising them for finding slivers of kindness and love in it, that's all.
