Inhabited Abstractions and Motion
Second project of the first Semester of Sophmore year - Taking inspiration from either Rei Kawakubo or Balenciaga, we were tasked with creating garments whose focus was shape and volume, just like these two designers.
Artist Statement:
By considering motion in his designs, Balenciaga’s work is ingrained with dynamism and speed. Focusing on this idea of movement, I want to create a garment whose subject matter is motion, focusing on both the wearer’s ability to move, and its dynamism of shape, an article of clothing that looks in motion even when it is static.

Creative Skirt
Creative skirt mockup as a continuation of the Consumerism and a Culture of Waste Project. The main focus of this skirt was using the very draping of the skirt as a way to form pockets, of which it has 3 on each side.

Consumerism and a Culture of Waste
First project of Sophmore year design class, whose first semester is devoted to volume and shape.
Artist Statement:
Post WWII America was a country devoted to the consumer. As the perception of the masses shifted from potential workers to potential buyers, products were made to be purchased rather than to be used. The 1950’s brought about a boom in advertisements fully based in the fantasy of a perfect world, rendered plausible to the consumer by the purchase of specific brand products. Using magazine advertisements from the 50’s as inspiration, I want to illustrate the needless waste of consumerist culture by creating a zero waste pattern for a garment which is rendered wasteful by the use of bias and a circular base. Layering would also be used to make the excess of consumerism more apparent.

Culture Behind Glass - exploring the curation of non western objects
Project done in conjunction with a seminar paper detailing the shortcomings of museums featuring the “Other” in the west, namely the Quai Branly Museum in Paris, and ways this could be improved in the future.
Abstract:
Foreign objects don’t have the same inherent contexts that Western works have for the general Parisian viewer. Because of our trained understanding of our own cultural objects, the need for cultural contexts in European centered museums is not necessary - we are living in the context that Western works helped create. This is not true for most of the objects at the Quai Branly. By discussing the function of the Quai Branly, the way it exhibits other cultures, as well as how the voice of indigenous cultures tend to create a stronger narrative within exhibitions, this essay hopes to create a new AR related template for presenting cultures at the Quai Branly that better contextualizes its objects. Museums should uphold their responsibility to fill in the cultural gaps that its objects may engender within its guests, not forcing the viewer into understanding these works from a solely Western perspective.
From the previous project which aimed for us to reinterpret an object at the museum of decorative arts in Paris, I gained an interest in further exploring indigenous cultures and how they are related to the west.
The Quai Branly, though beautiful and atmospheric, makes understanding the foreign objects that it houses challenging. Focusing more on aesthetics than context, it is difficult to find a way to understand these objects outside of our inherent Western perspective. Through research on museums of the past as well as deep analysis of the Quai Branly itself, I decided to create an outline for an augmented reality experience that would permit the viewer to understand these objects through their context and their motion. My final is an outline for an app which uses AR to allow the viewer to have a better understanding of the use and context of the objects at the museum. Culture has both material and immaterial parts, and the best way to understand a foreign culture is to experience aspects of both.

Ummmmsmile based designs
Katie Stout’s artist statement is to"encourage people to invite the slightly deranged, ugly and demented into their lives through usable objects." I want to bring this perspective into a line inspired by her funky furniture, keeping as much of the texture and general playfulness that she brings into her work, into mine.

Harlequin Doll
60s style dress composed of scraps from both my upcycled project and final senior show collection. These scraps were cut in a square shape then layed out in a pattern, before being sown together with an over lock stitch. Styling, hair and make-up done by me as well.
Edited in the style of a magazine.

Men in the Abstract Rococo
collection inspired by the extravagance of the rococo period and my use of alternative materials such as yarn and grass. Because of my focus on the female form and female dresses, I decided to do a menswear collection to think of my designs more abstractly.

Paris Water Map
A water map of Paris – it was really important for me to relate the circularity of the cycle, with the Seine moving fluidly through the picture and evaporation and rain circulating around the city as well. represented is the runoff of the rain that creates underground water sources, as well as the water cleaning plants, one that creates potable water to be distributed to houses in Paris, the other creating non potable water, that is distributed to places such as the Pere Lachaise, and is used to water the plants there. A small diagram represents the way the water cleaning plants treat the water, and underneath it all, collecting all the water that goes down the drain, is the sewer system, dark and demure.

Screaming at God
with the goal of emoting a specific emotion, we tried to convey both grief and anger, and a strong sense of unfairness, of the kind that would be elicited at the burning down of a house - there's a strong sense of helplessness in it too, as a commentary of our own mortality, and our innability to stop it.

Familiarization and Deconstruction
Map of a Derive - FAMILIARIZATION AND DECONSTRUCTION
This piece is a deconstruction of the trees at Jardin de Tuilleries. By isolating their leaves and their structure, I get at the root of my unease with their appearance - they have been stripped of their “organic” elements to become a part of the architecture of the city.
This deconstructed tree is made to be viewed as a decoration, rather than a living thing. The hangers, as well as the placement of the installation, made to resemble a living room, all exacerbate the objects function as a commodity.

Dans le Metro - a Space between Time
“Dans le metro – a space between time” aims to capture the temporal and dissociative nature of taking the metro. Both nowhere and two places at once, riding the train feels like borrowing time, or loosing it, depending on what you’re doing to pass the time. Necessary and fleeting, riding the metro is an integral part of our everyday, that is also very difficult to remember with certainty. By using animation, my aim was to disconnect the metro ride from reality.
