Field Trip!
Mission: Gleaning Leftover Crops for a Local Food Bank!
Location: Long & Scott Farms, Zellwood, FL Crop: Corn!
A field trip for a good cause came up through a local charity to glean corn from a local farm. It was incredible to see what a little bit of time could really mean to help get food to those who need it.
As consumers we all want perfect blemish free food. On a weekly basis, we go through grocery stores selecting the best looking produce in the pile. Because stores struggle to sell the less than pristine fruits and veggies, many farmers cannot sell these crops. So perfectly edible food doesn’t even get picked because it can’t turn a profit, so the farmers have no choice but turn the fields and prepare for the next crop.
There is perfectly good that could feed people if we could just go out and get it?!?
This was a bit of a mind blow for me. It is also why I want to make a point of gleaning whenever the chance arrives.
In a few short hours we were able to collect enough pounds of food to feed hundreds. That was a good feeling and a great start to the day.
It was also great to connect to the actual crop itself and see how corn grows and how to pick it! The countless hours of shouting corny jokes across the fields made the entire experience priceless!
