White Arkitekter – Sustainable Architectural Solutions
White Arkitekter, founded in 1951 in Sweden, is one of Scandinavia’s leading architectural practices with over 700 employees. Over the years, White has completed projects in 50 countries in Europe, North America, Asia and Africa and is currently working on projects in nine different countries with the ambition to continue to expand internationally. Many of White’s projects are within the areas of urban design, sustainability and social sustainability. Current projects include the urban transformation of moving the city of Kiruna, Sweden, and the urban development in Rockaway Beach, New York.
On November 5, Monica von Schmalensee, CEO of White Arkitekter, will join the panel “How are we going to live – sustainably?” where she will provide unique insights into the challenges of building sustainable urban areas.

Sweden tops The Global Green Economy Index 2014
A new report ranks Sweden as the number one environmentally sustainable economy in 2014 in terms of performance and in the top-three spot for perception, in other words, how sustainable the country is perceived to be. The Global Green Economy Index (GGEI) looks at how 60 countries perform in the global green economy and has since its inception in 2010, consistently ranked Sweden as a top performer.
“Besides performing well on both the economic and environmental areas of GGEI, these nations display consistent green leadership and receive global recognition for it.”

The Lowline - A park underneath New York City
The Lowline, is a plan to use innovative solar technology to illuminate an historic trolley terminal on the Lower East Side of New York City. The vision is a stunning underground park that provides a beautiful respite and a cultural attraction in one of the world’s most dense, exciting urban environments.
This hidden historic site is located in one of the least green areas of New York City, presenting a unique opportunity to reclaim unused space for public good. Natural light would be directed below ground using fiber optics described as "remote skylight" to provide an area in which trees and grass could be grown beneath the city streets.
We look forward to hearing James Ramsey, Co-Founder & Creator of The Lowline and inventor of Remote Skylight explain his vision at this year’s Farm to Fork.
The High Line Park
The High Line was built in the 1930's to lift freight traffic 30 feet in the air, removing dangerous trains from the streets of Manhattan, and was in use until 1980.
In 1999 Friends of the High Line was founded to advocate for the High Line's preservation and reuse as public open space, and in September 2014 the third and northenmost section of the park was opened to the public.

Region in Focus: Stockholm One of Five Cities Selected As Winners in Bloomberg Philanthropies 2014 Mayors Challenge

On September 17, Bloomberg Philanthropies announced the winners in its 2014 Mayors Challenge, a competition that encourages cities to generate innovative ideas that solve major challenges and improve city life - and that have the potential to spread to other cities.
More than 150 top cities from 28 nations entered the 2014 Mayors Challenge. The winning cities were selected based on four criteria: their idea's vision and creativity, potential for impact, transferability, and viability of implementation. Find Stockholm's winning contribution below;
Stockholm, Sweden: Biochar - for a Better City Ecosystem Stockholm, like many global cities, is confronting the effects of climate change. Stockholm will create a citywide program that activates citizens as front-line change agents to curb this escalating problem. Together, the city and its residents will produce biochar, an organic substance that increases tree growth, sequesters carbon, and purifies storm water runoff. Citizens will bring their green waste to locations across the city for conversion to biochar and, ultimately, redistribution.
