….I’m just curious what “lesbian-coded” mean? Is it basically just “this person looks stereotypically like a lesbian and acts how I think lesbians act, so I think she should’ve been a lesbian and the writer’s a coward for not doing it”? I’m genuinely curious, I’m sorry if this sounded rude.

That is exactly what that means. It’s a way for people to attack authors for not canonising their ships while sounding progressive.

this isn’t in any way about “ships” lmao it’s about young lesbians growing up and not seeing themselves represented in the media and every character like them ending up with a man. the idea that ending up with a man is inevitable can be legitimately traumatizing for ALL young girls but lesbians especially. and to create a character that most people would recognize as a lesbian only to have her end up with a man is a conscious choice made by the content creator. writing about lesbians in the media will always be more progressive than writing a character who you intentionally have fit in with lesbian stereotypes (many of which exist not out of Backwards Labelling but because lesbian coding allows lesbians to recognize each other in a homophobic society) only to have her end up with a man.
