Black hair is constantly politicized to the point where we’ve had to stop wearing our hair the way it grows. It’s an integral part of our culture but we have to leave it behind to assimilate. Non-black people do it to be edgy and trendy. They don’t have to deal with the stigmas associated with black hair. They can just take off the “black look” and move on with their lives. It’s like a costume for them.

there are black people living in Japan. Perhaps older folks (elderly) might have an issue with foreigners in Japan, but for the younger generation it isn’t a problem. I have black friends that moved to Japan and they have never said anything negative happened to them. One girl I know posts about how people offer to help her and show her around. not gonna say racism doesn’t exist, cause it does…everywhere!

WE don’t gotta do anything to “assimilate” we gotta be proud of our roots and be stronger. I mean, who’s to say the people in Japan that enjoy black culture don’t get called out for it?
