a universe where harry is raised by sirius & remus - not without lots of bumps in the road and accidental induced trauma, of course. Godfather that's a dog and an uncle that turns into a werewolf most definitely calls for an unlikely magical childhood.
chapter one - two dogs and a fawn
The cabin on the mountain, which appeared peaceful and calm from the outside, was anything but indoors. Remus and Sirius were having a magic lesson with Harry â which turned out to be more chaotic and challenging than expected. A hole was in the roof and Remus was attached to a wall at Harryâs attempt at a levitation spell. An exhausted and irritated Sirius tried not to get too impatient with his young godson, as he was only the small age of nine. Remus reminded him to be patient, and it took everything in Sirius not to blow his top off.
âAlright Harry. Weâll try this one more time,â Sirius said in a strained tone, holding an oven sheet as a shield in case another spell went awry â which caused the hole in the roof. Harry winced at his words, but lifted his wand to give another go at it.
âYou can do this Harry. Just relax and donât think.â Remus said encouragingly from the wall, resisting the urge to remove himself from it. Harry had to learn one way or another.
Harry took a deep breath and pointed his wand at Remus. Sirius and Remus both braced for impact.
âWingardium Leviosa!â Harry exclaimed, wishing his wand with intent and purpose.
In his words, Remus was slowly detached from the wall and floated in the air. Remus and Sirius broke into a smile, proud and blissfully grateful nothing spontaneously combusted or Remus didnât stick to the wall again. Harry jumped up and down in excitement, waving his want and momentarily forgetting he was controlling Remus.
âHarry, wait-!â Remus exclaimed. Unfortunately for him, it was too late. Remus slammed into the floor and into the roof at least three times before Sirius snatched the wand out of Harryâs hand and stabilized his floating comrade.
Harryâs face went pale. âUncle Remus! Are you okay?â Harry and Sirius both rushed to Remusâ side, where he was sitting up slowly. One would suppose getting slammed into a roof and a wall back to back would be a little uncomfortable and disorienting.
âIâm quite alright, Harry. Not all spells go the way we want them to.â Remus gently reminded him of the fact while affectionately patting his cheek. Sirius, on the other hand, looked like he was about to lose all the patience in the world. He opened his mouth to speak, but Remus gave him a knowing look. Sirius sighed, and looked at Harry.
âYou just have to be more careful. We know this is new to you. That talent of magic is in you â Just like your mother. It just has to be more controlled.â Despite his encouraging words, Harry looked more defeated than ever.
âI doubt it. Mum would hardly be proud of my magic. I canât even handle a simple levitation spell.â Harry slumped on the floor, his quivering chin visible to his uncles. Siriusâ stern face instantly softened, and he sat down with Harry and put a comforting hand on his shoulder as Remus slid closer next to him. A bit of blood dripped down his forehead and he quickly wiped it before his nephew noticed.
âHarry, donât say such things. You are an exceptionally powerful wizard, and we wouldnât say so if it wasnât true. Your power comes from your parents. Strength of your Mum and recklessness of your Dad. They would be over the moon with you. They were over the moon with you.â Remusâ tone faltered with a bit of sadness at the end. Mentioning James and Lily was never easy. Sirius smiled at him and gave Harryâs shoulder a squeeze.
âThatâs right, Harry, Donât let a few struggles get in the way of honing your potential,â Sirius said encouragingly. Harry looked up at the hole in the roof and then to his Uncle Remus, who was watching him with soft eyes â but looked considerably banged up.
Harry rolled his eyes. Still visibly upset, he tried to cover it with his usual sarcasm and wit. âIf my potential includes blowing holes in roofs and slamming people into walls, Iâm a little uncertain of what it could do if polished.â Harryâs sudden change in tone made Sirius burst into laughter. Remus turned his eyes down but still cracked a small smile. Even though Harry doubted how much he was like his father in weak moments, his wit was undeniably like James.
âIâm sure you won't be slamming anyone else into a wall. Letâs get you some tea, yeah? Why donât you start boiling the kettle, and Iâll clean Moony up,â Sirius suggested. Harry begrudgingly nodded, but stood up and went to the kitchen to prepare tea. Sirius didnât let him go without a quick pat on the back, and then his attention shifted to his companion. Once Harry was out of earshot, Sirius spoke.
âGood lord, he really beat you up, didnât he?â Sirius stifled a laugh after taking another good look at Remus. He had a small cut above his eyebrow which was still bleeding, a bruise on his chin and back, dirt on his forehead and raggedy hair. Remus gave him an unamused stare.
âNot worse than when James accidentally got me stuck on a branch of the Whomping Willow. God only knows how I survived that. I looked like a warbly stick when he managed to get me down.â Remus shook his head fondly at the borderline traumatic memory, grazing his fingers across his bruise.
Sirius laughed and stood up. âAlright Moony, letâs get you cleaned up.â He offered a helping hand to Remus and guided him to the couch as he went to grab his wand to whip up a quick healing spell. As Sirius sat him down and tended to his wounds, Remus felt his focus wander elsewhere. What an odd and unconventional life they lead. Remus thought long about James, thinking of his reaction to Harry unintentionally slamming him from the roof to the floor. Heâd probably laugh, initially. Knowing James though, he would be glittering with pride that his son had the same power as him. The same drive as him. The one called Moony couldnât help but wonder if he was doing a good enough job to show Harry who he really was. To Remus and Sirius, they couldnât help but see Jamesâ tenacity and Lilyâs kindness. He just wondered if Harry saw it in himself.
âAh! Much better now, huh?â Siriusâ sudden exclamation snapped Remus out of his train of thought, and he smiled weakly in return.
âYes, much.â Remus quickly sat up, but not without Sirius noticing the quiet shift in his eyes. âLetâs check the kitchen and be sure the little tyke hasnât burned down the stove.â
Before Sirius could protest, Remus was already down the hall, calling out for Harry. Sirius stood still on the couch, watching Remus turn the corner and enter the kitchen. He sat quietly for a moment before standing up and catching sight of a picture of James holding an infant Harry, a big proud smile on his face. Sirius chuckled to himself. He walked over and kissed the tips of his finger and tapped the picture, hoping his late brother would feel the touch. Before taking one last glance at it, he left the living room â but not without a small smile and a bit of concern in his eyes for Remus.
Two dogs raising a fawn â what a peculiar situation.
