At Least Shrug
Breathe.
You might never forget him/her.
There’ll be nights when her smile will cripple you with sadness
And mornings when his voice will fill you with emptiness
And days when those unanswered questions will haunt you again: What/why/when/where and how did all these happen?
But she’s already gone
and you’re left alone In the ruins of your humanity
But don’t forget to breathe
Their memories might remain
A mixtape of good and bad refrains
But one day, you’ll get up
Scarred yet proud
Just like what you do after waking up from your worst nightmare
You might still remember bits and pieces
Of heartaches from yesteryears
But wear them like a badge
Breathe and stay for a little while.
Stay.
You might not be able to save everyone
Your friend will have her heart broken so many times
Your brother will get frustrated over expectations not met
Your parents will fight over all sorts of things
And the world will be full of crap and inconsistencies.
(That you often wish upon a shooting star
For a spaceship that will bring you to the remotest part of the universe
Where you hope to find eternal respite)
You might not be able to pen everyone’s happy ever after
Not even yours but I hope you’ll stay
Even when caring becomes too painful
And there’s nothing you can do but listen
Become someone’s wonderwall – a secret hiding place
And once in a while, allow yourself to shrug your shoulders
The world is not for you alone to bear.
Life is not always nice
The rain you love is sometimes cold and cuts bitterly like ice
But in time, seasons will change
And wounds will heal
It may take long but one day, the hurts will be over
And broken hearts will be better.
At least for now, please breathe and stay for a little while.
